A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge Review 

This movie is actually pretty damn good. It's darker and creepier than most of the other movies in the series. This is a very underrated entry in the Elm Street franchise.

Its confirmed, Freddy's hand is secretly a shotgun.

This whole possession angle in this movie would have worked better if they made as if Freddy's spirit was trapped in the house due to the ending events of part 1, and Freddy needed a human host to kill for him to help him get stronger so he could re-enter the dream world. Just an idea please comment and let me know what you guys think.

I thought Nancy didn't die until Dream Warriors.

Freddy is the darkest and scariest in this film. Even the makeup looks more creepy.

I'm glad that they at least ended up getting Robert Englund, and didn't stick with hiring a guy who thought he was playing Michael Myers or Frankenstein's Monster. This is also why re-casting Freddy Krueger later in a remake didn't work either - no one else is as intrinsically linked to how the character was performed as Robert Englund is, and the fact this is true this early in the franchise, is really saying something.

9:12 This is a "Canary in the coal mine" reference. A long time ago, coal miners used to bring a caged canary into the mines with them to detect life-threatening gases like carbon monoxide, which would make the poor little bird freak out, then die--This was used as an alert system, warning the miners that they had to get out before the fumes fill their lungs. The bird's death buys them more time to escape. _This_ is the ridiculous horror movie version: where it not only detects the toxic gas, flying around frantically and attacks anyone around in a frenzy, but also combined with the forces of Freddy's evil... 🐦💥💀... 9:41 the bird explodes. Yay, symbolism?

When I was younger we had a house fire after a coffee pot shorted out. Since then, I keep my small appliances unplugged unless I need to use them.

I actually really enjoyed this film. I like the tone of the film. I like how freddy is dark and not cheesy. like that part where he pulls his head off and said he has the brains, one of the creepiest lines in the series. honestly I think the whole series except the first 3 are just bad. that's just me though.

Robert Englund will always be the glove-knife wielding, fedora and Christmas sweater wearing Nightmare killer, Freddy Kruger.

This movie is something of a guilty pleasure for me.Mark Patton's performance in this is really good, for one thing. For another, this movie's set design is like a time capsule of 1984/85. Especially Grady's bedroom, with that Memphis design wallpaper and the posters for popular bands of the time, his thick, cushy blanket looked pretty cool too.

It occurred to me after watching this that, in today's terminology, Dream Warriors would probably be labeled as a franchise reboot. :P Consider that Freddy's Revenge is the only movie in the series in which no characters from an earlier film return, and no characters from this movie return (nor are they mentioned) in any of the sequels.

Criminally underrated film in my opinion. I love this 1.

Also In Elm Street 3, he does make that kid sleep walk & it clear that he aware of the geography as he walks him to the top of that tower & balance pretty impressively, before making him let himself fall. I mean there nothing that could have stopped him from using that boy as a puppet to try and kill his "friends".

I love how Freddy's first evil move at the pool party is to DESTROY the centerpiece.

this is one of my fav NoES, with its delivery, atmosphere, lore, and everything as Freddie being this spirit tied to Nancy's home, and his manifestation of fire. The 'walking into a hedge and bursting into flames' was metal as fuck. I don't even care about the "power of lov destroys evil" trope is used, since Freddie just uses that bs to undermine the heroes efforts. He's such an ass hole

Having been a teen in the 80's, yes. Pool parties happened on days that end in y. EVERY day that ended in y. Some of us had to turn them down because we had OTHER parties to go to.

I think this movie sees Freddy at his scariest! It also is the most atmospheric of the whole series. Just posted our own recommendation and retrospective of this underrated sequel!

Freddy was actually pretty terrifying n menacing in this movie unlike every sequel after this.. Also Jesse was pretty believable and had one of the strongest performances in the entire series imo..

The doctor in A Nightmare on Elm Street was played by Charles Fleischer. Also, in Freddy's Revenge, Krueger HAD TO possess Jesse because he, Krueger, was during his battle with Nancy and needed a human host in order to regain strength.

I grew up with my dad occasionally calling my mom, well... "mom". I admit I still find it a little weird, too. I think it's easier to process it like a title, or a ranking. Especially since she wants *everyone* to call her "grandma" now that her first grandchild has been born. It's a status upgrade.

A Nightmare on Elm Street part 2 is great. Freddy coming out of Jesse's body and killing his friend, is great. Freddy killing the coach, is great. But the beginning and ending are what make this movie magnificent. And this movie has one of the best beginnings and endings of a movie ever.

I always assumed that Freddy wanted his body because It would allow him to interact with the real world BUT unlike when he pulled out of the dream (like the first film) he still has access to his magical powers... meaning he can project his dream powers into the real world... so the guy is a conduit rather than just a possession victim. *shrugs* I know it's a stretch especially given how first film could be mostly dream, but still ; he does need the boy for more than just a body, as we seen that he can animate his skeleton (even if you discount the whole pulled out of the dream thing) so if he wanted to be direct he could.

You know, I always thought it would make sense for Jessie to have the dirt on Snyder after finding him in a G bar, and get him off his back. Not for Snyder to double down and make him do laps lol

I have a theory that the entire movie is one mega dream. Freddy is using Jesse's fear of his own sexuality to torture him. That's why most of the lines can be misconstrued. Also this movies events are never mentioned again. Like the pool party or Jesse becoming freddy. I think Freddy represents his own homosexuality like how he is a part of him that he doesn't understand and can't control because that's what he is afraid of. So I believe none of this movie happened in real life. It was a huge elaborate dream to torture a sexually confused kid.

I didn’t grow up in the 80’s and I didn’t go to high school so I won’t pretend I was popula with the cool kids in school, but I had a lot of friend that had a lot of friends that also had a lot of friends and there was a party every Friday and Saturday to go to and in summer there was a party almost every day of the week. Idk why I felt compelled to speak on that.

Honestly while not my favorite sequel, after knowing more about Krueger this does make sense. We know his power comes from influence and he's been pretty much forgotten in this movie. Remember, he's still a spirit so why *wouldn't* he be able to possess people? So how would he gain influence? Find a way to become the Springwood Slasher in the here and now. He found a way, a way to *make em'* remember.

New Line Cinema originally didn't ask Robert Englund to return as Freddy Krueger and refused to give him a pay raise. A stuntman was cast as Freddy at the start of production. After two weeks of filming, Robert Shaye realized this was a terrible lapse in judgment, fired the stuntman, hired Englund, and met his demands. In the opening sequence, the bus driver is Robert Englund without the "Freddy" make-up. The only "Nightmare" film in which the lead character is male. Kim Myers was allegedly cast in the film due to her resemblance to Meryl Streep. In an interview featured in In Search of Darkness: Part II (2020), Robert Englund states that he was fully aware of the homoerotic elements of the film and was enthusiastic about playing up these undertones in the on-screen interactions between Freddy and Jesse. Mark Patton says in Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (2010) that he had to say no to some pieces of business, such as Freddy putting his blades in Jesse's mouth, that made him feel uncomfortable. Michael J. Fox was considered for the role of Jesse Walsh, but was unable due to his commitments to Back to the Future (1985) and Teen Wolf (1985). Jack Sholder couldn't direct the pool house love scene without cracking up or laughing so he gave it to an assistant to direct instead. Robert Englund has stated that Freddy's Revenge is his least favorite Nightmare On Elm Street movie. Mark Patton, an openly gay actor, has amusingly stated that he sees himself as the "first male scream queen" due to a combination of factors, including the film's homoerotic subtext, the fact that he was often depicted on-screen screaming "like a girl", and because he viewed the character as a closeted gay man. The line, "You've got the body... I've got the brains." was Robert Shaye's idea. This is the only film in the series not to use Charles Bernstein's original theme or a variation of it. Heather Langenkamp was never asked to come back, and the producers never thought of adding her to the story. She returned in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) instead. Unlike the first film, this film shows Freddy's sweater has stripes on the sleeves. In A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), the stripes were only on the torso of the sweater, with the sleeves being solid red. Film debut of Kim Myers Brad Pitt, John Stamos, and Christian Slater all auditioned for the role of Jesse. John Stamos ended up playing a character named Jesse in the TV show Full House and Fuller House. Wes Craven, director of A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), didn't like this film. Despite the film's title, it is never revealed upon whom Freddy is seeking his revenge. In A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Freddy got back at several parents who burned him alive for murdering their children, but in this sequel, the Walsh family has just moved in, and have nothing to do with either his original death nor his demise in the first movie. Body count: 10 Jesse has a hat and a separate green and red sweater in his closet, a reference to the fact that Freddie Krueger is possessing his body while he's sleeping. This is the first time that Freddy Krueger kissed someone. Or, in this case, someone kissing him. The second time is in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988). During the final confrontation towards the end of this film, Lisa kisses Freddy in an effort to bring Jesse's consciousness back into his (Jesse's) body. During the scene where Alice and Sheila fall asleep in class while they're in the middle of taking a test in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), Freddy kills Sheila by kissing her while sucking the air out of her, which caused her to die of asphyxiation. The film is the first time showing Freddy Krueger, when he's amassed enough power, having the ability to warp or control reality. Though he can sometimes control reality from the dream world, this situation is when he's not completely in the dream world and he's able to go into the real world by possessing someone and/or through massive influence stemming from fear of him. Notably, during the final confrontation when Lisa goes to the abandoned factory to save Jesse, she's constantly being bombarded with frightening images and put in a perilous situation that isn't real.

Truth be told; I actually enjoy this one a lot. I actually rank it as third-best in the series. This movie...was legitimately one of the only times where Freddy actually came off as scary. In the other movies, he's threatening...but he comes off as much too comical to actually be scary. (Leading me to believe that it's more the IDEA of him that's scary, rather than the man himself.) I mostly give how little this movie acts like its predecessor and sequels, mainly due to this. This was the second movie, so they still had leeway to play-around with what Freddy was capable of. And he's not technically breaking any of his rules. My guess is, he was more-or-less tired of killing people while in their dreams...because later in the series, it establishes that - for now - he's bound to the children of those who murdered him - and they all grew up on Elm Street. (Hence, his Elm Street limitations.) However, Freddy probably figured that, if he were to possess someone's body, that's as good as being alive again; and thereby he'd be free to kill virtually anyone he came across. Which makes sense; as long as Freddy was able to possess Jessie, he could kill people outside of the Elm Street limitations. Essentially, all of it is terrifying because Freddy is particularly zoning in on this one kid, and not targeting anyone else. It adds to the feelings of isolation that Jessie is experiencing - whereas, in other movies, the main protagonist usually has a group of friends who also have had Kruger come after them in their dreams before. And it's even more shocking that, instead of trying to kill Jessie, Freddy is basically trying to take-him-over; using him as little more than a vessel that he can use to kill people with. It makes for a rather creepy atmosphere, and shows a bit of a clandestine side of Freddy that we don't really see again until Dream Child. It shows how clever he can be. AND also; once Freddy DOES assume full control, he doesn't really waste any time in getting to killing people. He goes after an entire pool-party's assembly of kids and just guts whoever he can get close enough too. It's such a change of pace, considering that Freddy will sometimes spend days, maybe even weeks targeting someone in their dreams, in order to feed off of their fears, until he's strong enough to kill them. Whereas, possessing a body, doesn't have that limitation, and he's able to kill outright. Freddy then later shows in the upcoming movies that he CAN and DOES retain the ability to possess people's bodies to serve his own purposes. The entire plot of Dream Child revolves around it, as does one particular scene from Freddy vs. Jason. However, much like when Freddy is pulled out of the Dream World by someone, he soon learns that while he has a body in the real world and without limitations, he's also is once again human, and can be hurt. So the trade-off doesn't seem worth it that much anymore. ...Though...I have to comment that I really do HATE the Father-character in this movie. He just comes off as one of the worst parents ever; the kind that's over authoritarian, who always thinks their kid is up to no good, with absolutely zero prompting or evidence. It got to the point where I actually wanted Freddy to kill the guy. Course I didn't understand what they were going for. All this time, I legitimately thought the "Homosexual" under(over)tones were actually just an accident; something that happened, that the creators didn't realize until after it was released. But then with it being intentional, it actually makes for an interesting parallel with how Homosexual teens can sometimes be made to feel. I initially don't think that it meant to say that Homosexuality IS a monstrous abomination, like Freddy is, but is supposed to be more of a Metaphor for such things. For example; Homosexuality was once SO demonized by communities, that teens who were secretly gay, often had a crisis of identity; they WANTED to be accepted by the community, to the point where they bought into the propaganda, and began to see their "secret selves" as a monstrous and abhorrent part of their personalities; something that needed to be locked away, or destroyed so that they could be "normal". In essence, if that's what the movie was going for, then it works. In fact, maybe it's Jessie's latent homosexuality, and his overall fears of being shunned by his family and community, that actually gave Freddy a door to get inside his head. If anything, I think the metaphor runs deep enough to be considered a brilliant commentary.

Never understood the hate for this movie. Was the first movie in the franchise that I saw as a kid and therefore it will stick with me in a special way. Plus you NEVER get a male lead like that who can scream like the best scream queens around.

Ron Grady is done so damn dirty in this movie and it’s the only death that upsets me. Also this Summer of Freddy vs Jason has helped me get through all of Friday the 13th and now Nightmare on Elm Street, so big thanks for these reviews!

Whatever happened to Angela Walsh? I just watched all 7 Nightmare On Elm Street Movies and it seems that Angela was never really killed off. She survived in NOES 2 and NOES 6 references that all the kids on Elm Street are dead but they never showed her death. For all we know, her family could have moved away after the events of NOES 2. So we can't know for sure that all of the original Elm Street Children died. Just thought I'd share my thoughts.

Honestly i like the possession idea its repetitive to do the same thing over and over again they only used this ability once more but only on freddy vs jason and maybe in the tv series. Personally they could have used it more.

While NoES2 definitely has a polarizing legacy amongst fans, its great to see people pretty much in unanimous agreement regarding Freddy's scariness/edge in this film. Perhaps its my absolute love for "Halloween" and "Alien" (and the approach taken with the respective antagonists) that made Freddy in this movie to me unquestionably at his most cruel menace. If you didn't watch the others in the series and just watched this film, Freddy is such an enigmatic, creepy, and cruel beast.....with limited screen time to boot. Targeting an awkward teen in the way that he does is just relentless...it feels less cat and mouse and more "ticking time bomb" which, while not the typical Freddy we all know and love, is still refreshing and different. It's honestly a shame Mark Patton's performance is somewhat bogged down with the awkward dance number and a few bizarre scenes because by the last third of the film, he seems genuinely terrified. I think he should be given more credit for a pretty stellar performance. As for Freddy, aside from the creepier textured witch look, the perfect lighting, and absence of comic one-liners, Englund gives this film's Freddy some little touches that are fucking horrifying. During Ron's death sequence, the way he looks somewhat confused yet still threatening after bursting out of Jesse's chest, only to break that with a relishing grin, putting on his fedora, and then that subtle little nod he gives Ron after his dad demands he open the door....getting the chills just thinking about it. Its the most Freddy has truly frightened me, and to think its all in a sequence where he says nothing. An odd, enjoyable, and genuinely frightening entry in the franchise IMO.
