There is testing: To see your horse's basic, natural personality. And there is training, which shapes their performance in a way consistent with their nature. This is a pure, simple, but interesting but irresponsible test of four horses' natural tendencies.
About Herm Gailey:
Herm Gailey has spent a lifetime with horses. He is a nonprofessional rider who starts and trains his own horses to successful careers in multiple disciplines. Away from the show ring Herm retains a deep respect and appreciation for good reliable trail riding horses and believes that all horses benefit from this type of riding.
There is nothing for sale here. If these videos allow one person to avoid fear, frustration, or injury or help one horse get a better deal, then that is payment in full.

You just did a version of the "Novel Object Test" that behavioral scientists use. This is one test used to evaluate the effects of a gene involved in curious versus fearful behavior in horses. The main difference in the Novel Object Test used in behavioral research is that there is no human involved (since obviously horses that trust the handler will be a lot less reactive). That said, good trainers (and horse owners) do informal behavioral testing all of the time and it's an important tool in understanding the individual horse and tailoring your training for that horse.

I think that before you get a particular horse or dog, you must find out what their temper, ents are. Before I purchased a puppy and picked one out of the liter, I did a few tests very similar to what you did. 1) open an umbrella quickly right next to him. 2) shake a can of coins yo see whether fear or curiosity is the response. 3) spray a water hose next to them 4) see how quickly he comes to you. 5) check to see if he’s food driven out not. Plus a few more. I admire you’re coming up with ideas on how to judge a horse’s personality before you make a purchase you may regret. Thank you.

The yearling did an exceptional job, he's a nice boy! ❤ Your first 4 year old was awesome too. She has a calm demenor. The one that worried me the most was the seven year old. You'd think by now she'd have a bit more of a handle of strange objects. The second 4 year old was kind of no surprise, as she's just at the beginning of being trained. My 7 year old gelding would have stomped on it to say "Hey this isn't your space. Get out of here!" 😂😂😂 I rhink this is a great experiment! No horses were permenantly scared in this experiment! 😅😅😅

Thanks for your comment. I agree with your assessment. Simple little test that tells you more than you might expect!

Palomino: Is it food? I noticed that the palomino tried to approach the object even before you kicked it. In my experience the quiet/curious horses can tend to be a bit "bargey"--wanting to "push into" pressure and not as naturally good with respecting the handler's space. It seems to be part of that personality, and like fearfulness they can improve with training. Interested to hear your thoughts on the calm, curious but bargey horse!

I have a cow bred mare that is exactly like your sorrel mare. She's a granddaughter of Rooster and Playboys Badge. She's 12 and her reaction would still be to jump, snort, and run sideways before deciding that it probably isn't going to eat her.

Probably just me, but I've got a doc bar/dual pep horse and an old man/peppy san horse and they're both laid back and fearless. The second one has been known to jump onto a moving hay wagon lol. But mine are definitely the exception

My QH is a reactive horse while my mustang isn't. He's investigative. He would react like the palomino and just eyeball it

The Palomino colt is by a grandson of Special Effort who was an extraordinary racehorse in the 1980s. His mother is Laughing Boy/Flit Bar.Basically, though he was very quiet he was bred to be a racehorse. His sire has produced lots of nice levelheaded ranch and rodeo horses who look like they’re going to be great trail horses as well. Unfortunately, this nice colt died suddenly and inexplicably in January 2024. A full necropsy at University of Pennsylvania failed to draw a solid conclusion. It’s always the good ones… On a more positive note I have his full sister and also a half sister who are now yearlings. They are very nice horses with the same sort of mindset he had.

I am pleased and a bit flattered at your interest in these nice young horses. We purchased these from the Open Box Rafter Ranch in South Dakota. Our goal was to step back from the high maintenance high-performance horses I have shown for quite a few years. It has been a gratifying and refreshing change. For more videos on these girls you could go to the channel page and click on any one of the following episodes 179, which shows these fillies arriving, 186, 193, 195, 197, 201, 202,203,205,209. Again, thank you for your interest.

@@hermgaileyalifetimewithhorses Great minded horses, I really liked what I saw. I was looking through your videos and was trying to figure out who the sisters were, so thank you for the list of episodes. Would be very interested in seeing more from them in the future. God bless
