Regarding the wavy lines in the tower tests, on one of the RU-vid reviews of the CR-10 they were getting noticable wavy shifts when they printing large vases. Turns out that it was the part cooling fan, which was strong enough that the airflow pushed and distorted and wobbled the part slightly during printing. This probably has a lot to do with the shape of the fan shroud/nozzle, which looks like it's the same on the CR-10 and the CR-10 mini. Turning off the cooling fan and doubling the perimeter layers prevented the artifacting.

This is an amazing review. Thank you. I had bought one before seeing this and it confirmed my decision. I had spent months studying the different printers, and finally landed on the cr 10 mini and am pleased to beans with it. Good job on the review.

Thank you thank you thank you ! Finally someone who compares the benchy at different speeds... This is the best video I've seen to date. Well done. Most reasonable printers can do a benchy at 30mm/s but the real test is when speed is increased. Looking forward to more of your work .

It's really nice to see someone going in depth with these things and check the print quality from a few different perspectives. I for example do care that print dimensions are as accurate as possible. And since you have used a lot of 3D printers you can actually give some meaning to your findings. I mean, a printer is only as good as it is compared to its alternatives. Audio quality and image quality is excellent and its a well structured vid. Well done,!

I just discover your channel and I'm really pleased. It's instructive and helpful. You're right with the methodology: printing a same and significant set of models makes more sense than dedicating a video for each model which could end up pretty boring. Thank you for your videos. If you happened to print with ABS filament again on this printer, I would appreciate you share your experiment.

Great review Joe. How was the glass bed on the Mini, flat or did you replace it. Did you use glue stick on the glass ? And I bought and did a short you tube review of the CR-10 S5, the big mother. And the one I bought has a power loss resume feature that sort of works. Have you checked any of your CR-10 S printers to see if they have the power loss resume feature as well.

I have a CR-10 and the fan noise was driving me nuts. I googled how to make it quieter and found a tip with 4 fan replacements. WOW what a difference. It's hugely quieter now. the stepper motors are the most notable sound, unless the cooling fan for the supply, which is thermally regulated kicks on, and still it's much quieter than it had been. These same changes would work for the mini.

Great review - I like the base line comparisons - more objective ! You may want to think about coming up with a composite score metric - to account for things like flexibility, upgradability, community support / developments etc. All printers are a compromise; your score elements should help highlight the different trade-offs for the different designs / vendor strategies /model range options. Thanks.

Dimension error is good metric for the print quality! I had hard time to sand down parts that need to be glued together because the dimension is off. Print quality at the maximum height is also a good test. Usually I don't go for the full height but tend to leave a 10 ~ 20 mm margin for maximum height if I have to print large object. As for the benchy with different print speed, I would love to see the actual printing time comparison. For example, 30mm/s finish printing in 45 minutes, 50mm/s finish printing in 38 minutes, etc. etc. Lastly I would like some metrics on how the support printing is performing. Can the support be peeled off easily. Does the support leave significant marks on the print.

"It's important to print really slow with flexible filaments..." I always print slow, but I like the surface finish I get at 20 to 30 mm/s. :D I think the standardized tests will make it much easier to get an apples to apples comparison. I know some people may get bored of seeing the same models over and over again, but for people who are serious about doing research for purchases, this is good data to have. I agree with you on the strange price point. For the price delta, I'd scrape the 30 bucks from somewhere for the full size CR-10.

Great review. Probably the best tested and in depth printer review I've seen. I had a CR-10 S4, and the problem I had with echos I'm sure was due to the weight of the 400x400 print bed. I would imagine that if ine doesn't need to print larger that 220mm in one direction, this version would have a slightly better print quality than a CR-10 or S4.
@3DMakerNoob
@3DMakerNoob 6 лет назад
+Mark G infact it does, I noticed that it produces almost no ghosting or resonance at around 50 mm/s while the cr-10s shows them quite a lot
@MakerFarmNL
@MakerFarmNL 6 лет назад
I have got the CR-10-S5 (500x500x500 mm) and that version is very obvious proof that the i3 setup (with a moving printbed) is not very well suited for larger print volumes indeed. I had to tune down the MAX Y acceleration (of the bed) to 250 (originally that was at 1500 steps / m2) in the firmware (configuration.h) to get rid of ringing / ghosting. But of course tiny parts now print rather slow compared to the normal CR-10 because it never reaches the end speed with tiny prints. Still it is very nice to have that kind of build volume. Compared to the normal CR-10 (that I also own) the print quality of the S5 is only slightly lower now, but still more than exceptable.
@Mark_5150
@Mark_5150 6 лет назад
Tinkerman i bought the S4 to do architectural prints, the ghosting was bad with all those 90 degree corners and openings. I had to slow the outter shell to 20mm/s to help, but it was never good for what i wanted it for. Sold it to a guy who uses it for costumes and it works great for that since they are larger prints and usually have post production work done to them.

hi. I"m writing not just to thank you for yet another great and professional review, but in particular to congratulate you for your new even more systematic and standardized approach which should hopefully allow more comparison between printers. Especially i'm hoping it will be a solution to the problem i kept seeing: manufacturers keep putting some big numbers on their machines when it comes to printing speeds, some put 80, some 120, some like in this case 200, yet in real life it turns out differently. For example I'm currently printing mostly on a Prima Creator P120, which is i think a here in Germany re-branded (obviously more expensive :P ) Mp select mini, and here too they say something like 55mm/s. After experimenting around i actually print with it only around 35-45mm, and it's cases like this where i hope you'll develop a system to differentiate between the pie-in-the-sky promises of the manufacturers and the max speed at which a user who wants consistent max speed but at quality will do in his actual use. I saw for example you did an introduction for beginners series on another mp select mini type model, i'd be super curious if you were to give that a "realistic max speed" where you'd put that one, just like with the CR 10 and future printers. I hope in the future speeds will keep rising, but especially alongside with print sizes, since, like you mentioned in this review, maybe the wife might not like it if i printed big at the cost of always printing. I have a hope here with the growing trend of printers which save for power-off, which i hope to one day use to pause the printing in the evening and to resume next morning not to disturb the sleep of anybody.

The boat called "Benchy" which you see in most printer reviews is about 6cm in length and 3cm wide. Your objects can definitely be printed, though fine details like mirrors may look quite ugly. Perhaps an SLA printer like a formlabs form 2 is better suited, but those are quite expensive currently.

Very good review.. and yes.. standardizing the prints will make reviews a better instrument of comparison... but before you know it, reviews will consume too much of your time and you will in time probably resent doing them... so the it is key to find a balance between do-able / standardized / thorough ... Please try to find a format that wil work for YOU as well. It is nice that you ask your audience what they want, but in the end the audience also would like you to be able to continu to create this kind of content and not get fed up with it.

I really liked the technical part, I think you should keep doing them. Just so that your videos have a better view and the impatients do not stop looking ahead of time, maybe you should split the video in 2 parts. 1st the cool parts, then the technical part. So you reach 2 audiences. in the cool parts, you should talk more enthusiastically, in the technical part you talk normal. That's my opinion. Hope this helps. At 3:20 did anyone else notice that the filament was freaking the flip out?
@NicozStrat

can it print nylon filaments?
@3DMakerNoob

+NicozStrat it can but the nozzle won’t last long as it’s standard brass nozzle. Would need changing after about 50-100 metres of filament

the $30 diference is because they want the cr10 original to look cheaper. new buyer will find it there is more value in the original cr10 with just only $30 difference. however for those who are aware of the cr10mini launching time will be thinking it is waste of money to buy cr10 mini .the cr10 mini is not their main selling point. it is faster to manufacture big scale focusing on 1 product rather than 4 product at the same time. the other model creality offer is just to fullfill the market needs.so that everybody will remember them as a best brand.from beginner to pro level. off topic : they should add rigidity of the frame to maximise the precision and better design the print plate rail so they dont have play between the frame & print plate

Talking about the relatively small difference in prices between a "big" CR-10 and its smaller bro, it's the same problematic as kids' shoes: it's not because they're tiny, that you manufacture them as easily as adults' shoes ;) I dare suspect that the CR-10 mini design was the matrix of the big ones. CReality states that CR-10 mini's PCB and al are military grade... then support long very long hours of continued operation

Hey Joe, Cr10 mini or Anycubic i3 mega?
@3DMakerNoob

Tough choice, I’d probably lean towards the i3 mega to be honest

Cr10 mini or ender 2? I'm after quality but if they are similar will spend extra for the mini. At mo can get it for £50 more than the ender 2
@3DMakerNoob
@3DMakerNoob 6 лет назад
+Joe Blog personally I’d probably go for the mini. The extra build volume, the additional part cooling fan and the community behind it are more than worth the bump in the price. Print quality is pretty much identical between the two
@3DMakerNoob
@3DMakerNoob 6 лет назад
+Joe Blog you might also want to consider the i3 mega. Very good machine out of the box

3D Maker Noob hmm another £70. I'm gonna be in enough poo with my missus if I spend £233 on the cr10 mini. That's why I was looking at the ender 2 at £175. But then I saw the mini on offer.

+Joe Blog you won’t go wrong with any of them, elder might need a bit of additional work eventually due to no part cooling fan, the mini will be good right off the bat

Regular cr-10 looks like a better deal. The cr-10s is much more expensive.

Too bad all the links are with GearBest coz they just shafted me with an email saying I need to pay more $ for shipping six (6) days after my order (Shipping to US) was accepted, and of course paid. WTH? Disappointing. Them sonsabitches! Saved me money, LOL! PS: You'll not see any (I haven't) links to Banggood. Wonder why? Haha! And GB doesn't have any in stock and the shipping dates keep getting farther out. ':○ Last week the dates where October 25th-ish now November-ish.
