Lille is located in northern France just a stone’s throw away from the border with Belgium. A lively city with strong ties to Flemish culture, Lille is fairly small and compact, meaning that all of its major attractions can be seen on foot. Here’s your guide to spending one day in Lille.
Places mentioned in the video:
- Patisserie Meert
- Grand Place
- Place aux Oignons
- Belfry of Lille
- Porte de Paris
- Birthplace of Charles de Gaulle

The architecture in Lille is stunning, and the colours of the buildings..... I was there again in May 2023, signed up for a rare tour of the Opera House which included a trip up to the viewing platform on the roof for some stunning views across the city. Trying to work out how I can get back there for another visit. Don't forget the zoo, and a walk around the citadel. A day (or several days) pass on public transport will enable you to travel to nearby Roubaix and Tourcoing by tram or train. I didn't need my umbrella either......

Thank you for an excellent video! Very informative. What are your thoughts about Expat seniors living in France? As retired educators (we helped a new school open in Lviv - Aug-Dec), we are exploring Poland (Dec-Jan), Estonia (Feb), and possibly France. Lille has more healthcare centers than anywhere, I've heard. Paris is beautiful and walkable. Nice too looks beautiful and welcoming. But, Nantes looks amazing also. We seek a walkable, affordable, and comfortable place to call home. My wife Cindy has MS, so calm is a required component. I grew up in Los Angeles, working & driving 24/7, so the European pace is very attractive. Thank you. Dean & Cindy

I've been living there for more than 10 years now, this must be in another universe! people working for the tourism office are such masters at the art of deception! Indeed, there are a few bars and restaurants where you can have decent food and drinks, and a few nice buildings and streets in the old town center. But the rest of the city consists of a bunch of hideous malls like "EuraLille", streets full of bankrupt shops and littered with trash, a tremendous lack of green spaces but plenty of cars and traffic jams, and top record air pollution rates!!!

Le welsh is a French take on Welsh rarebit which is very much a Welsh dish :)

At the end of the video when she talks about when to travel ; She forgot to mention the first weekend of September. That's when "La grande braderie de lille", (street/flea market)takes place and will be very busy. And it is tradition to eat "moules-frites" (mussels and fries) that weekend

I have never heard anybody ever pronounce Lille like that. I am English but usually people say "Leel' even when speaking English. Nevertheless a really great video and you're right. However you pronounce it Lille is worth a visit.

Le Welsh is everything to do with Wales, it's a direct adaptation of a Welsh rarebit.

well, it's a rather crappy city, despite the flemish architecture of the old town, it's a noisy, dirty, polluted jammed city, very few parks, almost no trees. But if you want to spend 10€ for a pint of Grimbergen in the middle of honking cars on a saturday afternoon, that's the place to be!

For the trees yes it's on big inconvenient of Lille, even if you can find Citadelle and Parc du Héron. Noisy it depends where you stay. Dirty I'm not shocked, it's still a big city (over 1 million so yes you have traffic). 10€ the pint of Grimbergen ? Wtf never saw that, the good beers (so not Grimbergen) in Lille are around 6-7€
