Gene Roddenberry was a very prolific writer. Many of his pilots never made it to series . Planet Earth, Genesis II, The Questor Tapes are examples of failed Pilots
It took awhile, but if you look you see many similarities to Star Trek and more importantly the near impossible task of adhering to The Prime Directive.
Not two minutes in and Roddenberry is into the hot social issues. He was in the same school as Rod Stirling; Theater with a larger purpose of encouraging human rights and civil progress.
The Prime Directive is meaningless, both in and out of Star Trek. For proof of how little Roddenberry cared about it, his next show, Assignment Earth, was going to deal with an alien society that broke the Prime Directive every week.
What happened to James Stacy and his girl friend was awful. Terrible loss. I see no problem with this pilot. It would have made a decent series like The Lieutenant.
@@frederickwise5238- Thank You. I guess I will have to Google it. What do you mean it took out his Left Side? He stopped being a Liberal and became a Conservative.?
@@HoldenNY22 @HoldenNY22 How would a drunk driver change Stacy's politics?? IT MANGLED HIS LEFT ARM AND LEG. HE LOST BOTH OF THEM !!!!!!! were you being intentionally obtuse or are you smokin somethin?
@@frederickwise5238 - I never heard of James Stacy before. I had no idea what happenned to him I was trying to be facetious and somewhat humorous.. Again, I didn't know who he was or what happenned to him. I apologize if my comment was offensive or hurtful to you. Are you a relative or friend of Mr. Stacy?
Roddenberry just couldn't get enough of Tiberius. James T. Irving? Just like in "The Lieutenant," Rick T. Rice. We all know James T. Kirk. I wonder why that name was so important to him?
Roddenberry preferred names with hard consonant sounds - Pike, Kirk, Spock, Scott, McCoy, Chekov - as opposed to say softer-pronounced/sounding names like Lee, Meriwether, Larry -- and sure, Sulu and Uhura are the exceptions
@@keithhunter3910 That's it! As I get older it's more difficult to put the exact names to the faces but at least I can still remember the faces. It makes me wonder sometimes how different an actor's career would be if they were to get a break in a serious project before they strike it rich in a comedy. A conundrum Burt Reynolds suffered his entire life. It's sad to have been as popular and successful as Reynolds was in the schlock he pumped out for two decades while resenting the very medium at the same time. I just recently rediscovered "12 O'Clock High" and am enjoying all the youthful actors who worked on it from week to week (including the aforementioned Reynolds).
RODDENBERRY WROTE SO MUCH WENT BY AT LEAST 2 OTHER PEN NAMES. LESLIE ROBERTS, WILLIAM LESLIE ALSO WAS A SPEECH WRITER FOR NIMTZ AND MACARTHER. HE DID LOVE TO WRITE! WOW! HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL WROTE 20 EPISODES WOW!

Thank you for sharing! I would like to ask you a question, I hope it's not a problem. I saw that you shared some episodes of the "The Faye Emerson show"; I'm looking for an episode in particular, it was filmed on the 11th of November 1950, guest star Edith Piaf. If you have it, please could you share it?? I'd be pleased to watch it in its entirety. I'm looking forward to your response!
Was the soldier walking toward the camera at the 5:07 mark, Gene Roddenberry himself? Was it his idea to appear on camera, or someone else's? Before anyone states it, I am aware of his service in the US Airforce, WWII.
At 11:40 when he says old bed check charlie right on schedule , Mash the series got that from this show when Radar would hear a Korean plane dropping bombs , if you remember that.
Alan , During WW II Japanese would send one bomber over an occupied island at night to harass the allied troops and keep them awake. I have read they would even set one engine to run poorly and misfire to annoy the people on the ground. This plane was also called " Washing Machine Charlie ". Radar in the series MASH would often look up and say " Choppers " meaning incoming wounded.
@@toadstool1404 look at the tell tale signs. M38 has tool indents on passenger side under entry also cutout for fording kit on hood and second battery compartment on cowl. I have one and a war 2 Ford gpw…..
Yikes, what a tragic and horrific life for James Stacy, the loss of limbs, accidents and death, suicide attempts and then jail time for sex crimes......holy moly
This unaired pilot was criticized by the Leo Burnett ad agency (in their overview of 1962-'63 pilots) as being *"......in extremely bad taste. It's badly written and conceived."*
Nobody has mentioned the name Edward Jellico. Ronny Cox played Captain Edward Jellico on Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes "Chain Of Command" Parts I and II.
A lot of people would, but don't forget, its network home, ABC, buried it as the eleventh episode, implying the powers-that-be were underwhelmed. As for this, it's nice to have something to compare "Combat!" and "The Gallant Men" and "12 O'Clock High" to. More importantly, to have the RARE opportunity to see the early work of Gene Roddenberry., because of the "Star Trek" notoriety of course . . . And most importantly for sixty years anyone who has a mind to has been able to watch the "Combat!" pilot, via local stations running the syndication package, then cable and satellite channels doing the same. Plus, beginning in the 1990s we "Combat!" fans could own our very own copies on VHS and eventually DVD. Watch 'A Day in June' ANYTIME we want. But, WHERE IN THE WORLD are we going to experience Gene Roddenberry's 'lost' pilot, "A.P.O. 923"? Nowhere, unless some lucky person or genius with connections at the tape and film vaults in Hollywood tracked down a print; took the trouble, made the effort, to digitize it and offer it on RU-vid. For that -- despite our personal "thumbs up" or "thumbs down"(e.g., sucks; I like "Combat!" pilot better) review. Lastly, because of the name recognition factor, there are more Comments than usual for a 60-year old busted pilot. Clearly they'd be intrigued to read "Skilledloser"'s critique -- beyond a whining "I'd rather watch the 'Combat!' pilot again." "Just sayin'" "Many, many thanks, 'jeffsabu,' for this enlightening, entertaining, rewarding experience. How considerate of you to leave the end credits' Screen Gems logo and narration intact -- which far too many presenters on RU-vid edit out."
Gene Roddenberry good made some good tv shows with actors like Gary Lockwood and Ricardo Ricardo Montalban from Star Trek tv shows and a Star Trek movie RIP Gene and Margel Barett "Nurse Chapel"
