Love this break down ! Me and my brother have decided to make this a 4 day hike for my bday next year. We live at sea level so will be taking the year to do smaller hikes in different mountains. But for figuring out what to pack this was very informative 😁

That’s amazing! You will have a blast. It’s a really tough hike but it’s so worth it! Id definitely recommend training for it!

Hey there, Thanks for putting this together. Your packing list link isn't working. Is there another way to get that?

I really love your tips & tricks, and your organization, but I think your music is a little loud. Thank you so much for making this video! I really enjoyed it.

Thank you! I apologize for the music. I was still learning how to find a good spot with the volume. Im much better at it now. Thank you for your input! I hope you enjoy some of my other videos.

Now that you’ve done this more than once, do you have any specific updates to add? I was wondering about wide brimmed vs baseball style hats. I noticed the footwear change. Any tips based on the differences? Lastly, I’m considering compression pants and compression socks on the way down to hopefully lessen the toll on my lower body also bc I’m probably closer to your dad’s age. Thoughts on compression gear, e.g.2XU?

Thanks for reaching out! yes id say there were absolutely some changes, and I believe it was learning from the first time and also just the shear miles I cover on the rim to rim to rim trip. I likes switching to the baseball style hat, partly because it was lighted and could tolerate wind a bit better. I thinks the footwear was one of the biggest changes. I changed from a trial runner - Altra Long Peak 5 to a road running shoe - New Balance - with a lot more cushions. I really appreciated the extra cushion with that many miles, though they have virtually no grip! which ended up okay most of the time because the trail is not very technical. Id sy the compression shocks would be your best bet, Ive never used them but I know it will help move your lymphatic fluids out of your legs. Also be sure to use hiking poles, they are a must and will absolutely help take the impact off you legs. If you can id definitely recommend doing strength training before this, having strong leg muscles will help your knees take the impact as much. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

The packing list link doesn’t seem to work. I’m wondering if we’re going to camp a night or two… would the packing list change much?

Some people book the overnight reservations years in advance! if you're planning on staying at the bottom of the canyon be sure you have a prior reservation! The only thing that would change is to pack more food and of course your sleep system & tent.

That’s overdoing it on the electrolytes. You just want something more than just pure water if you’re on a long hike.

It worked well enough for me, but I do sweat a lot when I hike so having extra electrolytes if I need was really helpful. Thanks for watching!

Overpacked

Yes I definitely did. It was my first time doing this hike. I was glad to over-prepared than under. This year I completed rim to rim to rim, I packed less gear and was able to complete it in 27 hours lapse time. That video is posted if you want to check it out!

That would be a massive understatement. R2R can be hiked with a fanny pack that can carry 1.5 to 2 l of water, no change of clothes (the temp goes up 20 F within 25 minutes after starting the hike). But, everyone packs their fears instead of reading and researching. Basically ignore 99% of the info in this video.

lol geez. I think that everyone had different needs and different experiences on trail. Id say that some people who hike that trail would be in real trouble if they only carried 2L. I was simply sharing what I was planning bringing for this hike. I think it's helpful to have a variety of options when it comes to a hike of this magnitude. In 2023 I hiked R2R2R north to south and back. I absolutely packed a bit different than in this video. Because I learned a lot from my first time. This video might not be helpful for you but it could be helpful to someone else. Thanks for watching!
