He was a pioneering kababayan, a visionary. A patriotic businessman with a resolute spirit. He was the grand patriarch, Eugenio Hofilena Lopez, Sr.
His prominent place in Philippine business and industry is undeniable. From sugar milling to publishing one of the first postwar newspapers in the country. From land, sea and air transportation, to pioneering what is now ABS-CBN, the leading broadcasting network in the country and the most admired media network in the whole of Asia. He capped his achievements with the daring purchase of Meralco, then and now the largest electricity distribution company in the country.
In all his endeavors, Don Eugenio's words and deeds spoke eloquently of a business philosophy that was way ahead of its time. He said "A commercial firm which could hardly make both ends meet but which gives service and real satisfaction to the community is, in our estimation, more successful than a multimillion corporation which reaps huge profits and them keeps them to itself, completely neglecting the community which sustains its life."
