A Pawn Endgame with an AMAZING use of Opposition!

Another pawn endgame with a brilliant move and one that requires deep knowledge of opposition. I'm a bit low on ideas at the moment so here's a more instructive chess puzzle.

Chess is beautiful. There are only 6 pieces on the board, but the puzzle is still impossible to solve for an intermediate mind.

Not really. I’m an intermediate and with enough of an understanding of opposition, diagonal opposition, distant opposition, triangulation etc etc all basic endgame concepts. Then it’s not impossible Edit: Not that I don’t think chess is beautiful I agree with that sentence. Just don’t agree that this is impossible for an intermediate

I think distant opposition is a more common name for it, but yeah, I also don't quite understand it.

Thanks :) Btw, there is also diagonal opposition and in the most general case, an opposition is defined when two kings are standing on squares such that if a rectangle was drawn with the kings being the two opposite vertices, all 4 vertices would have the same color (e.g. W-Kc2, B-Ke6 would be an opposition).

It should be called a brilliant use of triangulation, because that is what is being used here.
@cjxchess17
@cjxchess17 3 года назад
Triangulation is when you move your king in a triangle to lose a move. Here the white king never goes to the same square twice and doesn't need to lose a move.

@@Zaspar you want to approach the pawns RIGHT AFTER your opponent so when you do that, it would force their turn to move. And hence there will be no legit move for the black king, he must abandon his pawns after that. Also note that if you arrived too late, it would be a draw too, as the black king would capture g4 pawn before you would be there to protect it

Hi, it is not clear for me, what should white do if black will simple stay with their king at the same vertical?
@cjxchess17
@cjxchess17 3 года назад
White will just keep the opposition, e.g. 3...Kc3 4.Kc5 Kd3 5.Kd5.

@iddomargalit-friedman3897 3 года назад
@@cjxchess17 won't it lead to draw by repetition, which is black's goal? Notice he was asking about same vertical, not horizontal. For example if black just goes back and forth between c3 and c2
@cjxchess17
@cjxchess17 3 года назад
@Iddo Margalit-Friedman oh ok, I actually didn't realize black has this defense. But here white can just play Kd6 after Kc2 and if black tries to maintain the opposition white will take the h6 and g5 pawns well before black can since black's king is no longer on the path to target the g4-pawn.
@iddomargalit-friedman3897
@iddomargalit-friedman3897 3 года назад
@@cjxchess17 But isn't black gaining the opposition exactly what you tried to avoid?
@cjxchess17
@cjxchess17 3 года назад
White's goal is to get his king to g6 when black's king is not attacking g4. So if we look one step back when black's king is on f3, white's king must be on f5 when it is black's turn to move. To maintain get to this position from the starting position, white must be able to take the short opposition at anytime black's king is on the 3rd rank. If black's king stays on the second rank, opposition is not as important since black's king is not on the optimal route to capture the g4 pawn. (This is another reason why white should play g4 on the first move) As long as white doesn't allow black to get the opposition with the king on the 3rd rank, white is winning. Hope this helps.
