The Cooler Master NC100 is an ultra small form factor case that's meant to build an ITX gaming PC with Intel's NUC Compute Elements. The ironic thing is that its actually a really, really good case that's attached to a pretty expensive platform. Let's check out airflow, size and more

I would love to see the NUC compute become a regular product. You get one of these cases where you install a computer board and a gpu, both equally upgradable in the future.
@JamesCoyle95
@JamesCoyle95 3 года назад
The NUC module should have had the components on the other side of the board. That way, when you install it alongside a GPU, the intake fans can pull air from both sides of the case rather than having to leave a gap between the module and GPU to let it breathe. That also has the added benefit of allowing for some super thin case designs if you were to lay both components flat rather than side by side.

I think these NUCs in general, especially the nuc 9 extreme, have a great value as really portable workstations: bigger than laptops and ultrabooks but much more processing power (w. Full size GPUs) and better thermal performance (at comparable thread counts and clock speeds for the same mobile CPUs) than comparably priced ultrabooks and laptops (i.e. look up & compare specs with a Lenovo Thinkpad line device at ~$1800 price point). New gen compute element comes out? Just swap RAM & SSD sticks and you're good to go in under 20 min (compared to several hours trying to upgrade motherboard, coolers, fans, all power/data connectors in/out of a mobo). Remover that time is $$$ in the corporate world! For example, I use a NUC w. an RTX 2060 super to output to three 2K (60 Hz) monitors while working with massive spreadsheets (~20 MB each with hundreds of thousands of cells and built-in macros constantly running while I feed data into the files) and running data analysis software using R programming language, while having a few browser tabs opened in the background and some Spotify tunes. I would not be able to do this in a laptop/ultrabook similarly priced to this NUC. Honestly, I don't think the NUC ecosystem will ever be ready for gaming. A good ITX Build will be cheaper and get you far better performance with non-mobile CPUs and better thermal performance

I like the size and look of the case. If you hadn't mentioned build quality not being the best, I would have been OK with the price given it comes with the PSU. I do agree it's still steep though since it's coming from a big big brand such as Cooler Master. I expect something like my NCase M1 or NFC S4 Mini (Classic) to be pricey just because it's a small company putting in limited run orders through a larger OEM (Lian Li for example). They should rework the internal design of this case to work around a standard mini ITX motherboard. Fix the glued on mesh filter situation. Few other tweaks. Put it at $150 and I'd buy it.

At it's heart, the whole NUC Compute Element platform is a great idea. Where it fails miserably is the execution. If every single element of the system were separate cartridges that you could easily slot in and they were far more affordable. Imagine a standardized system where you would literally just plug in a PSU cartridge, MB/CPU cartridge, GPU cartridge, and however many SSDs/HDDs you wanted like they were Nintendo game cartridges, placed the cover back on, plugged it in and turned on the power and you were off and running without ever having to think about it. The mainstream public would eat it up. It's very clear to me that the mainstream wants the power components of a PC with the ease of a console. How all these manufacturers fail to realize this is beyond me.

I don't get who these NUC compute boards are for. If you're not buying a NUC, why are you buying a compute board for one? System integrators/computer builders will not make any money from this unless they are selling to people who are willing to pay too much for what they're getting. It's already too hard to make a profit from system building, but adding these overpriced compute elements doesn't really improve the cost per value equation. It just locks you into Intel's NUC ecosystem for no real advantage over conventional components. The only reason I'd ever do this is if the compute modules were leaps and bounds cheaper than a conventional motherboard/CPU/RAM combo... but that's not really the state of things. I guess the advantage is supposed to be that it's easy to put together, but it's not that much easier. Decades of component designs and standards have made conventional PC builds extremely easy. I hate to say it but this whole NUC modular system is just set up to take advantage of really ignorant people.

No idea what the point of this NUC system is given the only "advantage" over a DIY ITX build is that you don't have to install a CPU. You're still installing storage and RAM and putting everything together. The NUC Hades Canyon made sense as it was truly tiny and totally integrated, but this bigger NUC is just...pointless. Also, they still didn't flip the Element around to have the fan facing outward with fresh air rather than facing the back of the GPU. It's just poor design.
@michaelspraggins5246

Price Point issue not included, it really isn't that small. You can get a DAN A4, Velka case, Sliger case, etc for roughly this price and comes with full ITX support rather than being limited to the NUC platform... This thing needs to be MUCH smaller to justify the platform. Just big enough to fit an SFX PSU, standard 2 slot full-size GPU, and any remainder cube space for the NUC. That'd be roughly 315mm x 160mm x 130mm which is still 6.5L~. I just don't see how this platform has a future at those sizes when full-on ITX can get there already.
