Great tutorial thank you for sharing, very much appreciated ! I am just starting to make a string quilt for my 1 year old great nephew out of a jelly roll of Thomas the train. It’s going to be quilt as you go. I’m going to try this way first & on my next one I will use fabric squares like you did instead of sewing the strips to batting squares. Thanks again for all you do, I just love your tutorials ! 😊💕
Lovely quilt 🤩 I loved the old quilt too, especially how the maker had managed to make four of each squares 🥰 It made it very pleasing to have some order to the quilt top 😊 Thank you for sharing 👏👏🇬🇧
@@rosemarymurray8256 I love getting recycled materials from thrift. It's way cheaper than fabric. It's been washed. And if you screw up it's only a loss of less than $5
I am looking into what the easiest best option for the foundation would be. Interfacing has caught my eye, but wondering about shrinkage. Would you use cotton/poly or polyester? Or is muslin better? Wondering if just cotton fabric would add bulk? Thank you for your help!
Just subscribed. Excellent video. No complaints here, just a quick thank you for your willingness to teach and share your love of quilting with others during this busy time of year. Love scrappy quilts and this one will definitely be one I want to do. Looking forward to future videos and updates on this project.
Thank you so very much! This made my day!! Quilting is a passion for me and anytime I can share it with others I am excited to do so! Thank you again!!
No. You can use anything. I’ve made them using telephone book pages and also muslin in the past. You can use what you have on hand. You could also do this as a quilt as you go project.
Thank you so much for this video! Where is your shop? I’d love to visit. Deb x 😊 Just saw another video, and found out you’re in Alabama - I live in the UK. 😏 But I can dream! 😂
No, they are made with yardage, the same fabric for the whole quilt top. The secret is to cut out pieces from the repeats, put them together in a certain way and it looks fun like the scenes in a kaleidescope.
Yes please do a tutorial on that. Love making scrap quilts! This string quilt is definitely one I want to make. Also, could you please show us a crumb quilt. Using up quilt scraps will be great during these lean times. Thank you.
@@sewcharmingquiltshop No, but I think you talked about them. It would be fun to dump them all in the middle of the floor so we could see all of them. 🤣🤣
No it doesn’t matter. Use what you have! If you use the same size though, you’ll need to match the seams up. But both ways look great!! Have fun with it!
New subscriber, seasoned quilter. Your vid is great! I’m going to show it to my daughter, a new quilter. I think it’s will be a great way for her to get started. Plus she has full access to my 30+ year stash to help her and me. I’ve needed a way to reduce the size of my beloved collection. Not crazy about your background noise…. A TV, I would guess. But I am appreciative of your clear instructional style! Thank you. I’ll be watching for more of your vids. Happy Holidays.❤
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know. I hope she loves quilting as I do and I’m sure you do too! It is quite addictive! The noise is customers in the store and a minute or two of a cartoon to keep my grandson away from the camera for a few minutes. That is why I came in at 4am this morning to video the next one.
Learned how to do string or strip quilts from a friend, many years ago. But thanks for the review. I want to get back to it. Have been saving flannel strips form other baby projects. It'll be fun to put scraps together for boy or girl colors.
I am trying to find my craft room again and I have found totes of fabric scraps that I forgot I had. I have two options, get rid of them or make quilts. I prefer the latter option but I am having a hard time finding what I want to do with them. This helps me make that decision easier
Love your heirloom quilt and how the quilter knew she had enough fabric strips to make a large block from those 4 smaller blocks. Would love more scrap tutorials!!! I subscribed
Good question! They make paper squares you can make them on. Years ago I (and lots of other people!) made these on telephone book pages! Those are not so easy to find now though.
@jackie heaney, yes you can use paper if you choose to, but if it were me I would use fabric (as paper would break down and cause lumpy texture), if you use dryer sheets save the used ones if that works, I would purchase some muslin or fabric that is on sale for cheap price (get enough for your project).
Yes that is correct. If you have access to less expensive fabric then use that. Like I said before, there are lots of options to use as backing of the squares. Use what you have access to. 😊
There are many ways to do each block in quilting. It’s a preference thing. The fabric baking gives you form without having to try to make it the same size as the previous block.
There are so many good machines out there now! You can get machines that do so many different things now. My suggestion would be to figure out your budget and what you’re wanting to do with the machine and look at different models and check their reviews. I have a Brother, Janome, Juki, Singer and Kenmore for everyday sewing. They are all good!! My favorite is the Singer Quantum 9960. But that’s just me! Machines range in price so start with your budget and go from there! If you have questions text us or send us a message.
It doesn’t look like it. It appears to be smaller squares just like I made but it was made before my time so I can’t verify 100%. I can only go by what it appears to be to me. 😊
Thank you, this is great..i'm a beginner starting out..i've made 3 yard quilts for each of my daughters, so i have a nice little scrap bin to work with. I've never used interfacing, not sure what kind to get for a string quilt project. I subscribed👌😊
If you use interfacing, get one that’s thin but not so thin it’s going to rip easily. You’re basically wanting it for the square form to base your blocks off of.
