Ian McKellen was on Marc Maron's podcast (wtfpod.com) recently and thankfully there was some discussion about Shakespeare. Ian mentioned A Performance of Macbeth as one of the best filmed performances of a Shakespearean play even filmed. This was a television movie made in the UK. Here's the opening scene... with the familiar three witches... this is so good.
I found a copy of this film on the net... quite rare. Even more fortuitous is finding a good set of subtitles, a very good set, but slightly out of sync which I fixed. Judi Dench plays Lady Macbeth.
