Albert Spaggiari (December 14, 1932 - June 8, 1989), nicknamed Bert, was a French criminal chiefly known as the organizer of a break-in into a Société Générale bank in Nice, France, in July 1976. Spaggiari was born in Laragne-Montéglin in the Hautes-Alpes département. He enlisted as a paratrooper in the First Indochina War, and was posted to the 3rd Battalion colonial paratroopers. During this time, he and a few accomplices put a gun to the head of someone that they claimed had robbed them. The military court, however, believed that this was actually a stickup, and Spaggiari spent the next four years in jail. After his release from prison, Spaggiari became involved in petty crime. In 1976, he planned and executed the break-in at the Société Générale bank in Nice. The robbery was audacious and well-planned. Spaggiari and his accomplices entered the bank through the sewers and made off with over 50 million francs. The robbery made Spaggiari a folk hero in France. He was seen as a Robin Hood figure who had robbed from the rich and given to the poor. Spaggiari himself encouraged this image, and he even wrote a book about the robbery called "Fric-frac: The Great Riviera Bank Robbery." Spaggiari never spent a day in jail for the robbery. He fled to Italy after the robbery and lived there under an assumed name until his death in 1989. The Société Générale robbery is still considered one of the most successful bank robberies in history. It was never solved, and Spaggiari's whereabouts after he fled to Italy are unknown. However, his legend lives on, and he is still remembered as one of France's most notorious criminals.
