Hello and Welcome Subscribers
A special one for you if you are interested in WW2 artifacts.
The WW2 era Zippo lighters were manufactured for the troops and were made from Steel. Traditionally they were made from Brass but Brass was a war material and it could be no longer used.
A replacement to the brass case was made however Steel is highly corrosive in water and in most cases there would of been some exposure to water for the average GI.
Zippo devised a way to protect the lighter by encasing it in a black enamel which would keep rust from appearing.
When the black finish was baked it created a crackle like appearance on the lighter and the Black Crackle lighter was Born!
Today many enthusiasts and WW2 re-enactors look for these lighters as they are a rare piece of history. Some appear with coins or badges from there divisions that they served with.
This lighter believe it or not is still under guarantee from Zippo even though it is 65 years old. The Zippo lighter is a life long guarantee.

Great video. I still have my grandfathers brass zippo he had during the war. In high school I though I lost it and never forgave myself for that. Almost 15 years later I was going threw a box I had and there was the zippo. I will never take that out of my house again lmao

It was coated with black because it prevented light reflecting off the metal, which could give away your position to the enemy.

never issued to US GI's - they were sold at armed forces PX's and naval exchanges from mid 1942 to mid 1946. black crackle finish was used on lighters before zippo

You may be right. After looking into it some more it doesn't actually say they were given out but rather soldiers took them into battle. I am in no doubt though that some where given to battalions.

Not all world war II Zippos had three barrel hinges. The first wartime Zippo was made in 41- 42 and had four barrels then they switched to three barrel Zippos in 43 - 45. Also, the early four-barrel hinge had a flat bottom to the lighter and the 43 - 45 lighters have a concave bottom. You taught me something about why the bottom is concave though, I had no idea they were using tops for both the top and bottom of the lighter. The early 41 through 42s stand up 43 through 45 do not and now I know why, to save time and materials. Thanks for the video

After my Uncle (Who was a TEC 5 in WWII)passed away in 1988, my father sold my Uncle's lighter along with his medals for $5 to a "neighbor" because he was told they were worthless by the neighbor and that he was being a good friend to help him out like that to even be giving him $5 for them.

Sup mate, I’m about to buy this real WW2 black crackle for my everyday carry lighter, considering the flat wheel as opposed to diagonal wheel, I need to know your opinion about this flat wheel whether or not it’s reliable enough to be used for years of use. Please reply, mate! Much appreciated and may you have a fantastic day!

@anggarasatria
@anggarasatria 3 года назад
@@SilverLimey79 I’m the one who thanks you a bunch! It’s an old video and you still give your time on replying comment, unbelievable! According to one of zippo dating guides website (glenzippo.co.uk), it’s stated that this horizontal flint wheel was only in production from 1932/1933 until around 1945 and stopped due to complaints. Zippo was forced to do some researches by spending lots of time and money on solving this flint wheel problem, and then diagonal wheel was developed. Since the first time it was introduced in 1946, zippo has never come back to horizontal wheel again until now. That’s why I’m considering whether or not it’s worth the money to spend at least $500, I’m afraid that the horizontal wheel will soon need to be replaced not long after I use it as everyday carry lighter. Based on your experiences after years of use, what have you experienced about this horizontal wheel? Thanks in advance!
@SilverLimey79
@SilverLimey79 3 года назад
@@anggarasatria just as a suggestion just put a modern insert into it and keep the original insert. Problem solved and it will not cost an arm and a leg. 👍🏻👍🏻
@anggarasatria
@anggarasatria 3 года назад
@@SilverLimey79 I avoid to do that, mate. For me the case and the insert are very much like the body and the soul and can’t be separated haha, that’s why I want to keep it that way as my user. So do you feel like this horizontal flint wheel won’t last as long as diagonal flint wheel? Especially on being an edc lighter for years.
