A Piece of Railroad History Now a Shell of Former Self... (Switching Tower)

This structure has been sitting forgotten about and abandoned for over 80yrs and although I've documented one of these before, I didn't know about this one until it was suggested to me on FB. I was able to do a little bit of research to not only locate this place, but to also share some information about their use and how many existed at one time. Unfortunately now it's just a shell of its former self, but this still hold history and the importance it once played is incredible.

Hope you enjoyed a small look at the old days of the Railroad. Hopefully this structure will one day be repurposed.

Beautiful architecture. It's sad that it's been forgotten. It would be nice if someone would be allowed to rehab it into a home.

Beautiful. Such a shame it sits abandoned. It looked like the way it was built that they intended to use it for 100 years. Not just 15 or 20. Sad.

Wonderful relic of a bygone era. Hope it stands for another 80 years. My grandfather, as a young man, operated a similar switching station for the New York Central when he moved up here from Edwardsville Pa.

The tower down the line in Factoryville is a neat spot to explore, too. When I was in high school we stuck a ladder up and went into the attic. Its full of old DL&W paperwork, train orders, telegrams, etc from 1915 when the line was brand new up to the 1930s.

This is a beautiful building . . I believe the roof tiles are terra cotta , a clay based ceramic ..So many nice details in the exterior design . I imagine the operator really had his hands full at certain times ....had to have been a stressful job. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely little piece of railroad history .👍💙

I agree JP, whomever had that job. Had to be skilled, that is a lot levers to operate. And still work the signals. That a hard job, and that building is built tuff. The construction is amazing to see, for 86 years old i see it lasting a long time. Excellent video JP 👍👍👍👍

In 1990, I was visiting the Las Vegas area, and I explored and hiked along a lot of active rail lines near Lake Mead. They had switch house ruins and such that had long since been replaced with automation. But the switch houses and ruins out there lacked the style of the ones you have shown here, cinder blocks.🤷‍♂️ I went back in like 2005 or 2006, the rail lines had been turned into trails, and all of the structures removed, including the tracks. It was a weird experience seeing how different things were, just a mere 25 or so years later. Thinking about visiting my boyhood home in Oklahoma now,🤔 it has been a while....

I remember your previous video on a simular switch tower. Those switch levers were very cool. The tile roofing is simular to that of the 1904 homes built in St. Louis, Mo. During the World's Fair. I definitely see the church style interior. It's a shame you were not able to access the upper level but, from a safety standpoint I can understand. I have a couple of these on my HO Scale Layout. Really cool building and video.

Thanks for taking us into this charming, well built switch house. Yes, they don’t make them like they used to! They probably had architects designing these kinds of buildings; built for aesthetic pleasure as well as usefulness. Thank you for taking us, JP. Always looking forward to your next one! This is just so fascinating and what an incredible structure. You are exactly right in that they don't build them like they used to. Love your idea of it being restored into a home. Wouldn't it be awesome if it was put up for sale and someone actually could do that? Or also like you said, restore it for a museum or someplace for people to enjoy it. I learned so much again from you of how the switching tower works and the interesting history behind it, the operator sure had a lot of responsibility. Amazing video JP, thank you! 💙

Nice find! Most railroads demolish many of their unused structures. ...I wish I would have taken pics of the abandoned Lemo Tower (@Lemoyne, Pa. junction) in the early 80's after it was abandoned - the entrance was open at the time so I climbed the steps to see inside. RR paperwork was scattered all around - I should have rescued some of those historic papers. Soon after that they took it apart piece by piece and reassembled it at the Strasburg Railroad. It was and still is a beautiful structure!

Very cool building and video . But I wanted to let you know that there is zero chance there was a stove in the lower floor for heat . 100% would have been a steam boiler . There had to be quite a few radiators in that " chapel " room to keep the levers and arms from freezing up . Now there might have been a dedicated furnace up in the living / operators floor . Trust me , if you have winters there , a boiler would be needed . Especially with all that concrete !! My guess is that not only did the operator have to switch tracks , but also had to grease all the linkages , including out on the rails . He would also have to stoke and maintain the fire in the boiler . He was probably a busy man !
