I actually did the English subtitles for this, and other Roy Andersson films. Even though there's not much dialogue, its meticulous work since there is so much nuance in every sentence. I also made an effort to make the translation of song lyrics rhyme.

I'm usually a nitpicky bastard of a Swede, but I can't find anything to complain about in this clip when it comes to the translation. Since I'm Swedish, I obviously haven't watched the full film with your subtitles, but I'm confident that you did a great work throughout the film. As you say, the nuance in every sentence (and in every scene, if you look at it from Roy's director/producer perspective) is something one must keep in mind, and that's what makes Roy one of the great filmmakers of the 21st century. He created living paintings, in lack of other words. To add to that: It's safe to say that his Pigeon film wouldn't have won a Golden Lion without a proper translation, so I hope (and am sure) that you're proud of your work as well. Translation matters more than most think. Cheers, mate - or rather: Skål, kamrat. Ditt arbete uppskattas, speciellt eftersom att jag först blev introducerad till Roy via en utländsk bekantskap 2015. Antagligen hade hon sett just denna film med engelsk textning. Om Roy någonsin blir del av The Criterion Collection (vilket han borde bli) så hoppas jag att de kommer använda din översättning då också.

Interesting you should mention that, as a failed festival screening actually got me the job in the first place. I was a fairly well known film critic on Swedish television 20 years ago, and I happened to see Roy's film "Du levande" in Cannes. The translation was fairly correct, but missed so many nuances, and it was obvious from the audience reactions that the dialogue really didn't come through. I had a drink with Roy later that night and bluntly said "I don't think the translation worked. I could have done it better", to which he answered "OK, then do it!" I then re-translated the film for the international release, and was later asked to do "En duva..." and "Om det oändliga" as well.@@writeordie5452

Con le scene introduttiva e conclusiva dell'anziano "duro d'orecchi", qui purtroppo mancanti, una delle scene più coinvolgenti e commoventi che abbia visto ultimamente al cinema, un piccolo capolavoro che vale da solo tutto il film. Un vero peccato che sia stata tagliata...

The movie is absolutely brilliant, just like the other films by this director. I've seen them a dozen or so times and I still can't get enough :) Unfortunately, I found out about them quite late, which I regret, but in Poland they were not too much publicized. Sorry for my English :)

Absurd like monty python, emotionally disconnected like Camu, political in a Marxist historical materialism way, raw comedic through nihilism. Existential thoughts should be expressed more often in this manner through cinema so we can meet catharsis. Aristophanes would be more than pleased

Do you know the name of the real Limping Lotta? I Googled her and can't seem to find anything
@mellertid
@mellertid Год назад
@@harrygold682 she seems to have been an Anna Kristina, born in Vråms socken, limp due to childhood hip injury, death by falling off a train. Possibly sister to and / or confused with "Fair Lena". It's rather unclear, honestly. The melody is an American song, originally "sunday school" themed, later civil war "John Brown’s Body”-something. At the same time it showed up in Sweden, again first as a Christian (revival) tune.

@@mellertid Fascinating, thanks for replying!
@francisdec1615
@francisdec1615 Год назад
@@harrygold682 It's possible that she was called Lotta because she was selling alcohol to soldiers (mostly). In the poems by Johan Ludvig Runeberg about the war when Sweden lost Finland to Russia, there is a fictional woman called Lotta Svärd, who is the widow of a soldier from an earlier war (svärd means sword). She sells booze to the soldiers, but one soldier who is a coward is denied to buy, while a brave but poor soldier gets booze for free. When Limping Lotta was running her bar, only a few decades had passed since that war, so it could very well be that 'Lotta' was a synonym for a female bartender, especially since most of her customers were soldiers. A 'Lotta' is also (since the 1920s) a woman voluntarily doing civil service in the military.

It's called "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Later on the verses have been changed. You may remember the refrain "Glory, glory hallelujah" - the tune is quite catchy.
