In this episode I celebrate the long welcoming continuity of the old English inn.
perhaps on this occasion you might prefer to buy me a pint, rather than a coffee, but its still the same page and I can magically turn the coffee into beer - many thanks

I got it recommended too. At first I thought it was going to be a comedy sketch in line with 'The Fast-show', about an eccentric English gentleman, it had all the hallmarks and clichés of being so. It took about a minute or so to realise the fellow wasn't an actor lol!. I watched it through to the end though, with splendid interest.

Now this is what the internet needs.I find the new technology seems to separate us all so much, sitting down and having a chat with a pint and a pipe makes it more palatable. I love Tennyson’s work I live very close to his house, the lane leading up to it is called Tennyson lane, I often go camping on the hill which is called (Blackdown) near Lurgashall, and Haslemere in Surrey, it’s steeped in history, last year I worked on a house which once belonged to sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the owners kindly let me have an old fire grate from one of the fireplaces, it’s now in my wood burner and I can’t help but sit here with the fire roaring on a cold winters evening, thinking that once upon a time Doyle, along with some of his friends like Bram stoker, Oscar Wilde and Harry Houdini all sat round this fire grate and had some very interesting conversations.

Now that i' ve found this channel, i get more regretful not having had opportunity to travel back to Britain as that is my ancestral home where we know from family bibles the two original brothers came over from Nottinghamshire in early 1800. I never had a career that paid enough to fund a trip that expansive. Clock repair and restoration does not really make one a lot of money if one is legitimate.lol depends on where you live in the US. Anyway, i love your little talks as i always feel that spirit of Englishness that is nostalgic to me and gives me that feeling of closer ties to England. I love the old pubs and Inns, its one of my fave subjects i like to look up videos about on youtube as there are so many good historical presentations and travel videos of people that go around showing them and how they are built inside. The bad thing is seeing the videos about the old inns and pubs that had to be closed due to the covid economic crash or idiot government forcing a place to go out of business because they want to reroute a road or something. Really sad to see many of these great places shuttered and no life as a pub or inn should have.

For most of my life I've been reading again and again C. S. Lewis's Out of the Silent Planet. It's 16 readings so far. Ransom only just reaches Thulcandra, our world, after a sojourn on Malacandra (Mars). It's night and he walks through dark country till he approaches a village. He smells the beer of an inn. Ransom enters. "A pint of bitter, please," he says. His first words back on Earth. I have long wished I knew what beers available to me would be closest to the beverage that was drawn for Ransom on that wet night. What I imagine is that it was something like an India Pale Ale -- something nice and hoppy, like Sierra Nevada "Torpedo." But I don't know exactly. Suggestions would be welcome, especially in case anyone's had a good glass of bitter in England and then found something available in the States that was close.

@@MalcolmGuitespellThank you! I'll try to find out if that's available here in the Upper Midwest. Probably we need a Rosetta Stone of Beer, though -- something that would indicate close (?) equivalents of English beers with American beers. With the great growth of craft beers here in the States, I would think that this goal would not actually be ridiculous. The carving of this Rosetta Stone of Beer must be the work of masons who have travelled to both places, unlike myself.

We have a local church St Mary the Virgin North Shoebury which is 750 years old. They built the Asda superstore right next to it. The church is now affectionately known locally as St Mary-by-Asda. My husband's grandfather was a village blacksmith on the Yorkshire Wolds. He was a regular Sunday worshipper. Walking back from parish church to forge after service he would always stop for a pint in the Middleton Arms. When challenged by his Methodist wife he would always claim he was 'thirsting after righteousness'

British Pathe' video "The Oldest Inn" (1958) starts out at the White Hart Inn (1388) at Bletchingley, Surrey where for a "ha' penny of the ale and penny worth of smoke" you could enjoy a mulled ale with grated nutmeg on top and a clay churchwarden pipe by the open hearth (after a delicious plate of jugged hare (also cooked over the fire in a 180 year old pressure cooker built for that purpose!)). I hope that place is still open and not did not become an Aldi's.

I've watched that film, and really want to try mulled ale as a result. I'm not sure if I have anything in the kitchen that would work, or whether the barbecue in the garden would heat anything sufficiently. Frustratingly the barbecue is only wheeled out in the summer, when mulled ale isn't exactly called for.

This is what I needed. I’m Navajo so I love story telling like my grandma and grandpa also my parents use to tell me and my sisters when we were kids were the most memorable and beautiful thing ever for me. Also some scary stories too. Since I got older like 12 I’ve been reading books and collecting them, also comic books and graphic novels. Im a bookworm but I don’t tell my friends. J love your stories and pipe collection.

Today I went out to my local tobacconist and got myself some more pipe tobacco. I have a day off tomorrow and I plan to relax in my garden shed with my pipe and a nice drink! I love your channel! I hope you’re keeping well, Malcolm.

Malcolm you are a beautiful man full of wisdom and thank you so much for being yourself in this world of mass 'content' and the pace of it all. This is not content and is completely genuine. As people have said, we stay because of you, not because of the prize at the end of the video etc etc. Listening to you is so relaxing and very interesting as well. I have no idea how but you resemble the personality of all my grandparents in one soul! You are a hero. Keep it up ol' dude.

That's a good drop of ale, is that. I think my personal favourite of theirs is 'Ghost Ship'. Here in North Yorkshire, I'm lucky enough to live close to both the Black Sheep and Theakston breweries. All the best to you, Malcolm. Keep doing what you do 👍🏻.

@@MalcolmGuitespell I can imagine that a pint of Black Sheep's 'Riggwelter' would be especially good with a pipe. Strong and dark. I've never been a big drinker, but I feel it is my duty, nay privilege, as a Yorkshireman to partake in the pleasures of this fine land once in a while.

I've also rather adopted pipe-smoking as a result of Tolkien and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I've read Sherlock Holmes mysteries as a child, and The Hobbit was a favorite bedtime story of mine as a young boy. I often find myself returning to the two of them(usually with a pipe or three) in periods of great disturbance. I'm also rather fond of Peterson. My father quit smoking years ago, but quite liked Petersons. I'm lucky enough to have two. Thank goodness that the Peterson company bought all of Dunhill's old blends when they got out of the tobacco business. I am a fan of EMP and the Deluxe Navy Rolls. I also appreciate a good cherry cavendish. Excellent video, as always. Is there a possibility you might show us your pipe collection in a future video?

This was perfect viewing on this cool, rainy, foggy day in Wisconsin . . . Sadly, I cannot savor my pipe because our masters here forbid it (I live in an apartment). However I just ordered the Peterson's Standard Mixture for the next time I'm in a safe zone. I love Latakia and English blends. Thank you for inviting us in.
