I prefer acrylic stems. Wider array of colors and patterns, and are easier to maintain. I have some ebonite stems and I use various cleaners, polishing compounds and ebony oil to maintain them. That haven’t oxidized too badly, yet. I do wonder about the state of things in the airway, but it’s probably harmless. I use softy bits on both types of stems. More comfy, protects the teeth, and protects the stems.

Thank you for the response. Very detailed and I think you are spot on with what you are doing. I always wonder about the airways with my vulcanite stems. I would like to be able to really address that part of it, but not sure how to do that.

What kind of pipe stem material do you prefer?

I was always curious about the maintenance of vulcanized stems. I just buy pipes with acrylic stems because they seem simpler to maintain but I have my eye on a few pipes that only have vulcanite stems. Are they that difficult to keep from oxidizing?

They are very much a pain in terms of oxidation. But, they aren’t hard to clean up if you have the tools. I enjoy vulcanite because of the feel. But, I do like the cool patterns of ebonite and other stems. 👍🏻

@@overapipe1121 so as far as keeping the stem from oxidizing if you just keep the stem oiled are you good? Idk the proper term so I went with oiled lol

@@w.r.stufnpuf I see what you are saying. I have not been successful in keeping my stems from Oxidizing whether keeping it clean and oiled or not. But if you figured out a way to keep it from happening let me know. 👍🏻
