Man, I have a feeling getting some help in the shop would do incredible things for your mental health. Not to oversimplify your depression, it is never simple, but imagine the difference 40 hours of help every week would make. I'm glad you have rediscovered an enjoyable hobby. It's nice to see you light up like that. I hope it's only up from there.

Hey Kaylee.. TMI maybe but I’ve been so overwhelmed n depressed lately and plants have been such a healing special thing that has brought me joy that I’d forgotten possible. Your channel has helped me so much, from education to laughs to just having a lovely voice to listen to. Please try to take care of yourself, you’ve done SO MUCH for this community and you deserve it. People as busy and hard working as you are at real risk of this sort of burn out slipping under the radar, so I’m glad you caught it. Big love and take care you fuckin legend ♥️

A few years ago my violin teacher sat me down and told me to get a hobby outside of violin. It was because violin was quickly moving from being my one and only hobby, to being my job. And so she recommended I got a hobby that was just for me and just for fun. So I started knitting, and have kept that as a hobby ever since. I think it's important to have something that is just yours, and especially when so much of your work and life is online. Keep the horse riding just for you and enjoy it.

We are not horse people but our 7-year old has loved horses since she was a baby. She's been going to horse camps for a couple of years and started lessons in the spring (the farm we use is 7+). They teach gentle riding AND they do equine therapy. There was a waitlist but our kiddo has anxiety, and also needed some physical therapy and we managed to get her in. I cannot tell you what a difference this has made for her mental and physical health. It's incredible. Have a wonderful vacation!

That's so wonderful! As someone who rode from about 13-25, a good horse will teach your kiddo *so much* , like patience, communication skills, self-confidence, perseverance, and so much more. My mare was my best friend. I miss horses so desperately, but my girl passed away and I'm just not in a position to be able to have another or take lessons. Some day, though. I hope your kiddo continues to enjoy her horsey experiences, it's truly magical

Soooo happy for you !! Finding something "You" is an important part of life. Personally, I did it the wrong way: my hobby, social activities, and my full time job were all the same (renovating)... to this day I still have nothing else. Not a sad thing, I've learned to love it! But you Chica have done the amazing by self-realization, and then self-actualization. You have my respect as well as wishes for success in your venture.

I am so glad you have found something that gives you joy and is entirely unrelated to your work. That's amazing. Like you, I rode in my younger days, but never did shows. I rode bareback, trails and cross-country, totally just enjoying what I was doing. I haven't ridden in thirty+ years now, but I think about it a lot. I live it vicariously through going to shows and reading, and my friends who still ride. I look at horses for sale online and it is so exciting to find one that I yearn for. I can never own a horse again. I can never ride again. But they still make me happy. Horses are so special.

I have high functioning depression too, it use to be called dysthymia, yeah it sucks but it’s important to be aware. Soooo happy you re found your horse ridding hobby. I tried ridding while in college but I was terrible and didn’t have the time or money. It took me awhile to learn the squeeze vs the nudge/kick too 🤣. I mostly ended up being involved in horse breeding with the college’s program. Loved making baby horses and helping raise them 🥰, even if they were bratty sometimes 🙄!

I advise everyone to share their hobbies with the world. Share the things that bring you joy and you’ll meet some great people along the way. I’m still waiting to find friends who appreciate my love for plants and nature. Plants also help me personally combat depression. Taking care of them means I have to take care of myself. So it’s just a daily reminder and have something to wake up to. So you sharing your joy for horseback riding is great. Share your excitement. Everyone deserves to be happy ❤️❤️

I completely relate to your experience. It is very difficult to scale up in this business. People think rare plant shop owners make tons of money. But if you subtract the loss, you are just making an average salary. Hence, I decided not scaled my business, after a horrendous loss of over $10k in dead imported plants due to heat and customs holding the shipment for no reason at all. That experience pushed me into two months of depression.

I am really happy you are reconnecting with your previous hobby. Thank you so much for being so open and share your feelings with us. Many years ago I was involved in a horrible terrorist attack and back then mental health was not so important. I have lived a whole life with PTSD and specially survivors guilt. Thank God after many decades l found a great doctor and a great PTSD therapist that were able to help me greatly. Gardening has been my favorite therapy and last year my niece got me into this beautiful world of tropical plants. A couple of weeks ago I was watching a local plant auction (Fl j jungle ) and saw you were there for a few minutes, I got really excited to see you, I felt like I was at a concert with a celebrity. I really admire you and wish you the best. Blessings and hugs from the distance. 💚

I love hearing you are getting into riding again. I never rode but for 11 years I worked with horses- I drove big draft horses with a carriage. A relationship with your horse is unlike any other- they are closer than your pets at home. They are more on equal footing with us. I moved away and no longer have that job and I miss the boys dearly. What you said really resonated with me and I find myself missing them more than ever now. Cheers Kaylee. I had it happen the other way around recently. I suffer from lungcovid and I thought I was not improving at all even though im doing medical rehabilitation every week, then I had a fallback.. it sucked but it did make me see that improvement had sneaked in; and now that realisation helps so so so much to get through the super crappy days :) Enjoy your well deserved and sunburn-free holiday! ☺️☺️ pre-tanning deffinitely is the best survival technique in sunny times for us glow-in-the-sun pale people 😂.

I’ve had horses most of my life ( I’m 50 ish now). Horses are the most beautiful souls and when you get that connection it’s majestic. I’m also a qualified riding instructor. Something you might want to check out is that jumping is a much more natural movement for a horse than dressage. The stress to the horses joints caused by going in small circles is considerable. Hope you live your new old love of equines 😊. My new love is plants and thank you for all the info you share.

I remember when I was a child playing with horse toys. At the age of 13yrs, I rode my first horse and I have loved it ever since. Horses are one of the most beautiful animals on the planet. Be careful all the time. I first saw you last year. You was talking about the trouble you had in your job. As you were sharing plant information, I learned a lot from you. My house is full of plants because of info content like yours. I have learned how to shop and wait for the right price before I purchase a plant and you have also helped me create my plant collection. I know what you do is not glamorous but you do love doing it and you created a new life because of them. You're an amazing human being. If it wasn't for C-19 I would have never found you. I am so happy to see you in your shop. Maybe you may need to have a big plant haul sale so you can have more room for future plant purchases. Have fun on your holiday. Have fun and be careful...BYYYYEEE!!!

As someone who also grew up with horses and riding and then stopping in my early 20s I am so happy for you, that you're quite literally getting back into the saddle. Fun fact, due to my mom being a lifelong equestrian I got taught at a very strict yet very prestigious riding school and I witnessed adult riders that came from all over the country with their own horses be asked to leave after 25 minutes due to bad etiquette as it was called. So, props to you for educating yourself from all angles and trying to do your best in improving. Anywho, I'm really happy that the rediscovery of an old hobby is bringing you so much joy, and maybe even counterbalances some of the insane amounts of stress you have and the mental state you're experiencing. Sidenote: what might be interesting to you is learning to read a horse's body language and communicating in a very intuitive way like JoinUp by Roberts.

i used to ride horses and i learnt i think it was called parelli style (lol this was years ago forgive if ive got the name wrong). and it was quite different to the normal riding school style, i didnt really use any tack just a loosely tied rope around my horses neck and it was mostly about just shifting your body weight and changing your energy to let the horse know whether to slow down or speed up or change direction, etc. it takes training of the horse and you obviously you cant expect any horse thats used to being kicked or pulled on the bit to control it to listen to such subtle cues but i found it preferable to the tradiontal methods, may be something to look into

Kaylee it's so cool how you don't give customers a run around when it comes to refunds due to shipping problems. I live in Germany and the customs office is terrible and destroys things. I don't even try to buy stuff from small/medium sized businesses outside of Germany because every single time the products got lost/destroyed/rejected by customs, the business would refuse to refund me because "we're not responsible for shipping" and then I would have to file a charge back through my credit card.

Equestrian here! I feel like you might benefit from looking into learning theory to sort those thoughts of what is ethical horse training and keeping. It helped me alot to make sense of things and also put a foot down for myself on what I would not like to take part in. Becayse yes, much horse training is traditionally done with negative reinforcement and even a bit of sometimes I'll applied punishment (not only ethically, but also from a learning and development standpoint),whilst with most other animals we now almost exclusively train with positive reinforcement. Not to say negative reinforcement necessarily is bad, but thinking through how animals learn and what effects how ethical training and keeping is helped me alot. I have lots of good tips for books/podcasts/videos etc if you want to look into it!

@@carolinebaker8591 if someone really wanted to do something dodgy, they wouldn't need to wait until an 'open day'. Lots of plant shops sell expensive plants to the public.

I’ve recently deleted all my social media except RU-vid. And I’m so incredibly happy. I find I have more time to devote to things I love doing and I honestly manage my time better. Glad you rediscovered something you love! I used to ride when I was younger and it’s such an enjoyable hobby.

I had such a similar experience returning to riding as an adult. I felt like as a kid I was taught soo differently than my lessons now. For what feels like the first time I am starting to build balance and strength while riding lol

Also Kaylee, I'm not sure how active you are on Facebook but there's an awesome group called "as an equestrian I'm horrified" that is super supportive and great community for equestrians of all ages/shape/exeperience level etc.

Hi kaylee! Your mental health is so much more important than anything. There is no small or big depression. Depression is depression. I’m glad you’re able to identify this now. I hope you find something that can at least enlighten you! I did want to ask you about philo verrucosum just because my plant is struggling and I don’t know what to do. How do you salvage a verrucosum that has yellow dots and looks like leaf rot? I’ve been struggling with mine and it’s my birthday plant I bought a month ago. I was hoping you could give some pointers. Thank you’

Someday I hope to buy a ridiculously out-of-my-budget gorgeous plants, but I like to think I'd I'd just ask for tips on what I can do to attempt to revive / save the plant. But then I grew up on an orchard, I get plants aren't meant to boxed up and flown around the world. As for horses, I love their beauty and after a couple attempts at riding, I'm a carrot / apple feeder, not a rider. lol I hope you are doing great on your vacation and not too worried about the plant babies.

Hey! It made me so happy to hear that you are a horse girl too! Because we seem to be very similar and share some interests ❤️ Horses are the best medicine for one's soul! all worries disappear when you are around horses. And I really think you should keep it private! To avoid other people's opinions and complaints! Although I myself would have liked to have seen your horse life! But for your to be Kaylee, not the public Kaylee who is inspected down to the smallest detail. You are the best! ❤️ Take care 😘

First AMAZING work getting back into horses and firing that passion again! Second (it might get long winded) I ride western, but as someone who dives deeps into hobbies and did so getting back into horses. Find out who is a great *horse* vet in your area. I competed in barrel racing and a lot of horses used in the top tier competitions are treated and cared for way better than most can compare. It was eye opening. My personal opinion, horses in that level are treated way better than those competing local. Their joints get radiographed, hooves radiographed for proper angles to that horse, injections when needed to keep comfortable, body work like chiro and massage, routine dental checks, very intentional exercise routine and the list can literally keep going. A lot of locals would do routine like teeth, shots, farrier, and sometimes chiro but I've seen people let their horse sit for a month and then expect them to do events right off the pasture (not saying you would do this, just in observation over here in the states). There is a lot of information on nutrition out there, diseases associated with it (PSSM is a big one), so don't overwhelm yourself too much too fast because you'll burn that light out. Sold my barrel horse last year and slowly starting to enjoy my time around the retiree and younger horse we have again but not really wanting to put the effort into riding again yet. Burnout is no joke.

I've been going through a major depression and finally broke. On May 11th, my then 2week old baby girl started having seizures. The cause was viral meningitis and it set off a series of very serious situations. The seizures themselves cause significant damage to various areas of her brain, and then she had strokes which caused further damage and even death in some areas of the brain. She had an emergency decompression craniectomy (took out a section of her skull to allow her brain to swell safely). Then things calmed down. We went home from the hospital and we thought things were on the up once she got her bone flap put back in mid July. Shortly after the flap got infected (MRSA) and had to be removed. She's 4 months old now and is finally doing better. I feel like I can breathe again and just enjoy my baby girl. However, now that it's not a constant adrenaline, if had a major depression settle in and I feel like I'm struggling to simply function in the most basic way. I've been trying to find ways to help. Gardening has been one, and dog rescue has been another. I've also learned that I HAVE to ask for help. Help with food, help with cleaning, help with my other kids. It's essential. Long story long, when you are overwhelmed it's important to know that help is the key. You mention often how busy you are at the shop and I hope you can get help in so you can enjoy yourself again and do the things that make you happy.

1) I need the link to that shirt 🤞🏻 2) what style are you riding now, and what type(s) of horse? I did a fair amount of hunter / jumper and trail riding, and a little western barrel racing and pole bending. My ponies were a Shetland mare and a Paint/Thoroughbred gelding! 3) So happy you are taking time for you ❤️ sounds like you need it, you deserve all the best!
