I had the honor of meeting Maestro Kamen waaaay back in 1998 when I was 19. He was so wonderful-so kind, gracious, ebullient, generous with his time, and so much fun. I basically just fanboyed about how much I loved his work; specifically, when I told him of a single chord that I was obsessed with (heard in the Die Hard 2 score then repeated in the With A Vengeance score), I hummed it off to him, to which he then bellowed “COME HERE!!!” and pulled me in for a full embrace. I’ll never forget it ☺️ He was beyond delightful. RIP Maestro ♥️♥️

What an amazing thing to remember! Can you point somehow which chord you were obsessed with?

Back in the 70's I attended a New York Rock and Roll Ensemble concert in a garage on Kater Street in Philadelphia. By the time a year had passed I saw the band 3 or 4 more times in the Philly area and had become totally mesmerized by Michael Kamen. Even that early on he was the brightest of stars playing beautiful rock and roll with his band of fellow Julliard dropouts (I say with deep admiration). He was one of those gifts that keeps on given for which I am very grateful.

@Elisabetta I'm not sure my uncle died in 96. My uncle was a singer and choreographer. I think they met through David Bowie, but don't quote me on that. It was in the 70's.

Superb musician. First piece of music I heard from him is a piece called “besides you” from his band New York Rock Ensemble, many years ago when I was a kid. Later in life I discovered he also composed the Band of Brothers score. Two of the most poignant, beautiful pieces of music I know.

I was just about to write this same comment. Introduced to Roll Over in college. Still love that album, and listen to Fields of Joy, Beside You, Running Down the Highway, Gravedigger. Amazing talent, and a voice that resonates with me like no other.

I as a musician have mad respect for Maestro Kamen. It's not just the music, I love the elements of his personality that he adds. I first knew his work through S & M by Metallica and it blew my mind. May his memory be a blessing for all the people who have been touched by his work.

My sister and I had the first four albums by Kamen's group New York Rock and Roll Ensemble, then New York Rock Ensemble. They played a little Bach, but helped ease me out of classical snobbery into the wider rock world, just in time for the early 70s rock explosion. "Roll Over" is still one of my favorite albums. Fun, straight-ahead rock and roll. (It's here on YT too.)

Guy was one in a million. Bummer he's gone. Open range is one of my favorite scores. Anyone else think they are looking at John Belushi's brother here? Sheesh.

He said he didn’t study conducting, arranging or (playing) piano but studied oboe and George Harrison comes on to say he’s classically trained musician? It’s tenuous at best, I think it’s Michaels love of music that’s come through not being classically trained?
