A postcard from the past - the last mines of Yorkshire
Barnsley Main
The Barnsley Main Colliery is the remains of large deep mining site located in the Barnsley area in South Yorkshire. It is a rare survivor of South Yorkshire’s rich mining heritage. The buildings stand as a reminder of an industry that powered the Industrial Revolution and shaped the lives of communities.
The site of Barnsley Main was mined for over 170 years under different names until final closure in 1991. Today the winding and engine house appear isolated but they were once part of a bustling complex of buildings.
The remaining structures have been assigned Grade II Listed status due to their historical significance. The Colliery is known for being the site of the Oaks Disaster which took the lives of 383 people.

Hatfield Main
Hatfield Colliery, also known as Hatfield Main Colliery, was a colliery in the South Yorkshire Coalfield, mining the High Hazel coal seam. The colliery was around 1-mile (1.6 km) northwest of Hatfield, South Yorkshire, adjacent north of the railway line from Doncaster to Scunthorpe (former South Yorkshire Railway, or Barnsley to Barnetby Line) northeast of Hatfield and Stainforth railway station.
The colliery opened in 1916. The pit was stopped in 2001 and restarted 2007; the mine passed through a number of different owners in the early part of the 21st century, with subsequent operators entering receivership. During the same period the site was proposed as the location for high-technology coal burning power stations schemes which did not proceed.
In 2013 the major Doncaster-Thorne railway line which connected South Yorkshire to the Humber ports and Scunthorpe was blocked by a landslip at the colliery spoil for around 6 months.
From late 2013 the mine was employee owned by the 'Hatfield Colliery Partnership Limited'. Due to lack of demand for coal products the colliery shut down at the end of June 2015.

The tories didn't shut anything down they simply stopped subsidising the mines because they were unprofitable and a drain on taxpayer money.

Most of them would have closed in time the demand for coal isn't there any more there could still be one or two still going like the big k I live in fife Scotland the mines are long gone here

@@Paul-ul7dz Germany still has a thriving coal industry because they were sensible enough to realise a major economy needs its own domestic fuel supplies. Britain is now reliant on imported gas and coal, and is even getting electricity from France. How are you enjoying your gas and electric bills? Better hope Putin doesn't turn off the gas or you freeze.
