I remember an episode of "COPS" in which a college kid was pulled over and the cop found a Protopipe. He had no idea what it was, handed it back to the kid and let him go!
I don't smoke weed myself, but it's refreshing to see someone manufacturing a product that isn't designed to fail in a year so you have to buy another one. Cheers
@natmarelnam4871a lot of pipes are glass and ones that have storage in it usually is some cheap crap. so a good pipe with a storage area, and built in cleaning kit isn’t normal
@@ilovemotocicleta just because this one is unique doesn't mean other pipes are affected by planned obsolescence like a smart phone or something, any pipe will last practically forever if you don't break it yourself and keep it clean, which you should be doing anyway
A staple for employment on the inland, North Coast. 50 yrs a citizen in this County. Always amazing and never a dull moment. I've been fortunate to have played in every corner of this beautiful County. I won't leave alive.
Great story. Absolutely correct about the stigma remaining, even though on August 1st of this year it was legalized in Minnesota, I still look around to make sure the coast is clear and shield my pipe while sitting in my own garden. I'm 72 and have smoked it since 'the summer of love' in 1969. I had a 30 year hiatus because of my commercial drivers license. Now retired and enjoying my garden.
at 72 i'd say you've earned the right to spark up wherever you damn well please. you'd be surprised at how little people care nowadays. i personally live in a medical only state, it's technically illegal for me to smoke outside of my private property, but i'll smoke in public smoking areas and i never really get any dirty looks or anything. i still look around, but only to make sure i'm not about to light up in front of some kids or something.
My grandfather bought one of these pipes back in the 80's, and always carried it with him. He unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago and I inherited the pipe. It still works like new, and I use it daily. Great product.
Haha a proto was my first piece! I got it from an old newspaper delivery fella that was darn near legally blind and we'd meet up about 4 am every morning and run around tossing print and enjoying. About a week before he retired he handed me the bowl, and I noticed he'd put a real shine on it; he said "she's yours now, take good care of her. She's treated me well for 27 years." That was in 2006.
@@spencerwease4511 almost like they're still hand made or something. I charge around $500 for my knives. It costs that much cause it takes me fking hours, and it's just me. Imagine owning a whole company about it with employees and overheads and consumables, and taxes, and and and... I think it's properly priced for the cost of material, labor, consumables, and overhead. If ya want something like it cheaper you can always make it yourself. They did show you exactly how.
I’m 50 yo now, I did 21 yrs in the military. When I left home for basic I stopped smoking. My most prized “and used” pipe was my ProtoPipe. While in basic, my parents found it and took it upon themselves to dispose of it for me thinking I wouldn’t need it again. I bought that pipe when I was 16 and used it multiple times a day for the 4 yrs before the military. Before this video, I didn’t know you were still around. Going to your website now to order another one after I get off here. You guys perfected the pipe, this is the best smoker on the market. I loved that pipe and was always sad it had been thrown away. Just the memories of seeing one makes me smile. Thanks guys.
I have a stash pipe i found lying on the grass in Tucson AZ. way back in 1972....i still use the pipe daily, it's older than most ppl alive today. I don't know how old the pipe was before i found it but i've owned it for nearly 54 yrs. Still works well.😃
As an engineer my mind as a kid was more interested in the pipe than in the weed. I spent many hours making pipes for friends, and I didn't even smoke, I was fascinated by how I could make one our of ordinary things and also conceal it in plain sight in a way that no one would think twice about it. Cool company, and love the machining, I almost want to buy these as gifts to my friends.
I Made "Pipes" Out of EXPO Markers, Test Tubes, AirPlane LiquorBottles, & 2-3 Liter Soda Bottles. (Ya Had to Have AluminumFoil for TheEXPO Marker Cap.)😜
@@aretnap3653 I've used Ti-leaves, coral, mechanical pencils and pens with metal tips, soda cans, fruit, tin foil and the tubular ice cubes from McDonald's.
I purchased a Proto back in the early 80s. I lost it at a Iron Maiden show in the mid 80s. I didn't want to buy another one because I knew I would lose it again, they were not the cheapest pipe at the head shop. I worked in an auto parts store. One day after we closed up for the night the boss broke out some buds and asked if we had any papers. None of us did so I went over to the brass cabinet and put together a pipe out of brass fittings. I still have that little brass pipe I made at Rick's Auto Supply in Tucson Arizona nearly 30 years ago.
I'm going to buy one too. I'm just tired of buying glass pipes because they break or they get so dirty with resin, and cleaning a glass pipe is so awful. it's dirty it's stinky and it takes forever to clean. this thing looks so simple and easy and strong. I'm into buying things that can last a lifetime
@@user-rs1zq9ps7r yes you soak a glass pipe in alcohol and you will probably have to shake it to break up all the resin. you're left with a disgusting, soupy resin mixture that stinks and will stain whatever container you're using to clean it with. I would much rather just use a poker that's perfectly sized to push all the resin out of the pipe. the only way to fully clean a glass pipe is with chemicals, this protopipe doesn't have that excess chamber glass pipes do to fill with smoke, it's just a straight shooter. minimal cleaning and very sturdy
@@user-rs1zq9ps7r bro im not going to sit there and shake a pipe for like 5 minutes to clean it. it doesnt "sound" a lot harder, it literally is a lot harder, and it's messy... the alcohol and resin mixed together already smelled bad enough, and now you're seasoning it with salt? since my last comment ive already bought the protopipe, and it is 100x easier to deal with than a glass pipe. i just use the poker to clear the holes, wipe the poker with a napkin, and it's good to go 👍
OMG, my friend Jerry had one of these! A guy I was hanging out with about thirty years ago, really the guy who introduced me to smoking pot. Unfortunately he died in a car accident a few years ago but we had such good times just cruising around LA, Venice beach, Mulholland etc and we were always high because he always had the best weed - and THAT pipe. It's amazing how something as simple as a pipe can bring back such great memories & I had no idea what it was called or where he got it. Now that I know - I need to get one. And I'll remember my friend Jerry every time I smoke out of it.
@@cpmvmaker1 I was horrified when my friend Jerry told me that he lost his brother because my worst fear was losing my brother. And then nine years later my brother took his own life. It's a long long story which I'm actually writing a memoir about but - my brother came to me after he passed away and communicated with me very clearly. I'm not a really religious person either but having these experiences with my brother AFTER he passed was the most spiritually enlightening experience I've ever had. I now know 100% for certain that we don't actually die, only the physical body dies and when you leave your body we go to a place of light where pain does not exist. It was a painful experience to go through but in the end I literally got to know my brother after he passed better than I ever did while he was alive. He didn't change as a person either, even in "death" he still had his sense of humor and was still making me laugh. That experience with him lasted for two weeks after he passed. I don't know if I'll ever publish this memoir because I'm mainly writing it for my brothers daughter, she was only six when he took his own life. Now she's a full grown woman with a husband and two kids. If I ever do publish this memoir though it will probably be called "Walking With My Brother" - there's a story behind that title also, a long story.
I would love to have the chance to read it. I've had to deal with a lot of death in my lifetime especially here lately. It's interesting and sometimes helpful to hear about others experiences and how they deal with their loss of loved ones and dear friends. I'm so sorry for your loss but in the same I'm very proud of you for taking it and helping someone else. I'm sure she will greatly appreciate your efforts that will be felt on an insanely deep level.
@@jimbobf8017 It's weird what it does to the stages of loss. I went to school to become a therapist years and years before any of this happened so I had to learn about the five stages, which don't always happen in the expected order but in general it's 1. denial 2. depression 3. anger 4. bargaining and 5 resolution Usually when we lose someone it's impossible to accept at first. We can't believe it, you might still be in the habit of grabbing your phone to call this person but they aren't there. Well, imagine if the ARE there. The whole concept of "denial" goes out the window when they're gone physically but you're still communicating with them. It's hard to explain but it's part of the reason why writing this memoir actually helps ME. It helps me to sort of process everything and it's actually something that I would recommend anyone do if you're processing grief. In fact there's a specific type of writing I would recommend called "Proprioceptive Writing". There's a book about it but I forgot what it's called. It's like meditation on paper; you never know what's going to come out of it. You're not thinking, it's just pen to paper but within specific guidelines.
I lost an older brother to a tragic motorcycle accident back in the 80's and my other two brother to cancer and heart attack in the last few years as well as losing both of my parents, uncles and my two best friends to tragic deaths in recent years. Today I am not sure which is worse, to die young, like my brother on his motorcycle, and to be able to have all of your close family and friends attend your funeral and memorial or to live long enough to see them all die before you and be left with no one left that you can call, or who can still answer, even one single question that begins with a "hey, remember that time we..." More often than not it is the young that enjoy the luxury of reminiscing what is in reality a relatively recent past but for those who are long in the tooth those memories of those long ago yesterday's serve only as a reminder of all that has been lost and of every shared memory that is now shared with no living soul. There is no loss that is harder or more irreplaceable than that of your close family or of your life long friends, you can't make new ones of those, so take every opportunity possible while you still can to spend more of your time with them because there will come a day when either you or they will sadly find out that you no longer can. Time waits for no man.✌
Loved the proto pipe! I had a couple confiscated because when they’re in your pocket, they were easy to find with a pat dow because they were heavy. So Decided to make a disguise for it. Tried many items, and settled on an inhaler that asthmatics would use. Just cut the cylinder in half and the pipe fits right in. Used a label from the box it came it and put clear tape over that to hide the seam in the cylinder, and stuck it back into the mouthpiece of the inhaler. The weight was right and I would just hold it in one hand, my keys in the other, and go right through all the checkers at concerts or wherever. I might still have one around, but don’t need it now that we’ve legalized it. Cool video! Thanks for sharing.
Yes! The Proto Pipe has been one of my proudest possessions, alongside the Swiss Army knife, since the 1970's. I've been vaping for the past 20 years, instead. But, just last month, my vaporizer died. So, I pulled out the old Proto Pipe, still covered in nasty resin, soaked it in alcohol, and it cleaned up as good as new. It's sitting next to me on the coffee table, as I'm typing this. Thank you Phil Jergenson for creating such an excellent, well though out piece of engineering that millions of people have enjoyed. 👏👏👏👏🙏✌😎
I made a brass pipe in the early 1970s out of brass fittings and brass air impact gun parts with a few minor unique mods and I still have it today. I haven't used it in 30 years because I don't like smoking anything anymore. I assure you that it did get very heavy use during the first 15 years of its life, though. Everybody liked that pipe.
@@victormcdaniel4669 Actually dozens, and some hand carved wooden ones. This brass one, though, is the only one that I made into a little "kit" and carried everywhere I went.
The protopipe... my first ever bowl bought in 1994. I'd still have it to this day had it not been for a police arresting me for having it. I loved this pipe and love, LOVE that they're still being made.
you could sue the police for arresting you for owning a pipe and having it on you as people can us e a pipe for any dry material such as tobbacco or weed
So nice to see they got control back. I was looking for one about 15 years ago to replace my first one from HS that went "missing" around that time. Yeah, no presence anywhere. _Lots_ of knockoffs on eBay. I see an early Xmas gift for myself in a couple of weeks lol. Grats guys! Welcome back! :D
Crazy. My parents had one of these and I might have even talked to these guys while I was in Willits. It's just the sort of thing I took for granted as always being there and didn't realize was a recent invention from members of the community around me.
@3:54-3:56 😂 That look!!!! At least it ended in the most epic pipe to ever exist. I acquired one that was actually built in the 70s from a friend of mine back when I was 16, it is 2023, I am 38 years old and it took 2 1/2 months waiting time after I ordered it to get one, but mine comes in two days! Thanks for such an epic pipe. From being a little skateboarder, headbanging stoner, to a grown adult? That’s the best I’ve ever had in my opinion. I can’t wait to get my new one in two days. 😊
Best pipe ever. I've had mine since '78, paid under $20. Great for hash, you can open lid just a little bit to light. People complain about clogging. I clean out the tube by using a metal rod, (which is smaller than the inside diameter of the tube), just heat up the rod on the stove burner and push it through. It melts all the resin fast and easy. Still has all the original pieces.
I came across one of these in the wild just before high school, thing blew my mind and I had no idea that the design was already 30 years old at that point. had completely forgotten about it until now. awesome story, necessity is the mother of invention right?
Yes it will. As a former grower back in the 80’s living in Willits, I can assure you that it is breakable. The stem would break off in your pocket while trying to escape “Camp” and the local rip off cops. Willits was quite the show back in the 80’s.
I bought my first Proto pipe from a ad posted in the first issue of the magazine High Times. After it didn't arrive when expected I complained and a week later two packages arrived with two origin Protos. 48 years later and I'm still using them. Although I now install a fine stainless steel screen turning it into a mini bowl as legal weed is so strong I only need 2 or 3 small puffs to get toasty. And now Proto is back in business.
Thank you for posting this I've had mine since the late 70's. Knowing how perfect these pipes were I purchased a few more for myself and stuck them away. I wish I had more pokers! Thank you for posting!
I owned one of these and they were amazing. Of course it was seriously heavy .brass is heavy but it was flawless. The only thing was to order a extra poker because sometimes you accidentally loose that in tiny areas such as the couch or a car seat .lol but this thing is absolutely amazing.
I actually still have my PP that I purchased in the late 80's. For nostalgia I break it out when we go out hiking or on the beach. It was one of the great revolutionary items in the cannabis market. Great to see this video on how it came into existence. Love it.
Most kids in our town back in the 70's walked into a hardware store, picked out a few brass fittings and walked out with a pot pipe. I learned to be a toolmaker in high school and took those basic fittings to the next level where I was constantly asked if they could buy my pipe I was smoking from. Even the flea markets in Southern California sold the chrome plated "smoking sets" along with "roach clips" where we would buy a pipe, go back to our car and try it out. When I quit over 25 years ago I gave all of them to the neighbor kid I grew up with. Did have a friend who bought one of ya'lls pipe. True story, had a roach clip hanging from my mirror like everyone else and got pulled over by the cops, since no one ever used it and it had no residue they had to let me go....never put it back on the mirror.
My first pipe i made was a bong stem basically.. i took a small socket off a socket wrench and took apart a pen in class then put the socket in one end of the pen Then i stepped it up and burned a hole in a water bottle and put the other end of the pen in the bottle.. BOOM i got a bong. Then started using thicker bottles like arizona or gatorade so it doesnt crush from the negative pressure. only problem is when its brand new the herb falls thru cuz no screen.. or u have to barely light it cuz the flame would go into the pen and start heating the plastic. But if its used the resin cakes up inside the pen insulating the plastic
@@nickmartinez5644 A cool trick my friend came up with in high school is to cut the top and bottom off a soda can then cut the tube open so it lays flat like a sheet of aluminum, then roll it up into a tube and insert that into the bottle as the downstem. The top of the tube has the rolls inside like a cinnamon roll and when you bend them in a little bit they form a screen.
@Not Sure, my stepfather worked for Bird Oxygen Corp of Palm Springs CA and brought stuff home, so we took a complete machine (worth hundreds) and modified it to hook up to a gas mask and sealed burn chamber filled with pot. Once lit it was closed off and the air pump turned on maximum CFM, the result was incredible with smoke filling the mask where you couldn't even see their eyes and coming out around their face. Our "test buddy" had to rip it off and was gagging for at least fifteen minutes while all of us were laughing our stoned asses off.
@@CarLoverPhotography, well I "grew up" as they say and to advance in the programming and automation industry I had to stay focused 24/7 as well as being "on call." Another thing was a lot of things "disappeared" or were outright stolen like my Mitsubishi Starion Turbo with my firearms in the back after a day going out shooting by thugs and lowlifes all associated with drugs in the "Pass Area" (Banning, Beaumont & Cabazon), all with ties to LA gangs. Palm Springs was a different class of "stoners" as were those in Idyllwild, however I just came to where I had the opportunity to leave State and so I left. Things being as they were, I was given the opportunity to become a DPS Officer, so I took it. The new laws said that "you could have done drugs, but just not have sold them or have a felony" which I qualified for. As a cop I took a easy position in human behavior management and never had to deal with "pulling people over." When I use to talk with inmates, I made it clear that I didn't give a rat's ass if they did drugs or even if they sold them, it's that drive by that got innocent people hurt that concerns me. Now in my retirement years, I just laugh at all the stupid stuff we did and thank God we never killed or caught by idiot cops with an ego trip.
I remember the night of New Years eve (2000) my friend Josh showed up with one of these and everyone was fascinated with it. He probably took it apart and put it back together a dozen times that night. That was 22 years ago and he still has it.

I still have my proto pipe from the mid 80's too. In fact I have a whole collection of unique pipes that I have either purchased or created myself over the decades since then and made by utilizing all sorts of materials, anything in fact from bamboo to brass and beyond and also a few of the novelty pipes that I have carved from soapstone and alabaster or have machined out of aluminum stock. I have 'laughing Buddha' pipe that I spent many hours hand carving from a block of soapstone years ago and whose mouth is the carb and is designed to look like it is exhaling when you take your finger off the carb and also another that I machined on a lathe out of aluminum which i made to look like a socket wrench to be inconspicuously hidden in my toolbox. As a kid I discovered that the typical threads used on most electric lamps use the same threads as most metal pipes that were sold in head shops back then and so I have a brass pipe that I made in the 80's from an antique lamp. It looks looks very steam punk and it still has the dents and dings on it from the 3 times that it got confiscated and tossed by the cops, one time thrown in pieces, but I went back to recover it every single time. Over the years I have carved a coupled hundred pipes out of stone including custom designed ones in alabaster and soapstone. It's funny to think that I got kicked out of almost every shop class in school after always getting caught making a pipe out of the available materials and yet as an adult I was able to earn a little cash off of a hobby that I enjoyed, though, truth be told I more often than not just gave them away as gifts unless they were designed and carved on consignment. Unfortunately I can no longer carve stone pipes due to the arthritis in my thumbs, which no doubt was exacerbated by my hundreds of hours spent hand carving with hand tools the intricate details in stone, but I can still fully appreciate and relate to a fellow pipe aficionado and craftsman driven to make a better pipe and in the case of the Proto Pipe, a legendary design and textbook example of the maxim that form indeed follows function👍
I have had my Proto Pipe for at least 3 decades. I dug it out when i saw this Video. It still works and is complete, though it did need a cleaning. I know that alcohol is great for removing resin, so soaked it for a few and she's back to operation. Cool story, I bought my pipe in the Bay Area, Northern Cal. I can not believe the State of Kaliphonia would hassle these hard working Men. I live in Nevada now since 04'😀
I still have mine, as well as a brand new "back up", still in its little plastic ziplock (with instructions). Got the backup in case of losing the one in use, because I thought I might not be able to get one in the future. Bought that one twenty years ago. Peace
I found one in a crawlspace at a old house 18 years ago, didn't know what it was for a few years and got in trouble for it when my dad found it, I was literally shocked because I didn't smoke yet lol
I remember a toking acquaintance breaking out a proto pipe when i was about 14yrs old or so and i was in awe. That was in the early 90s. I never forgot that pipe so i eventually bought my own. I ended up gifting it to my niece cause shes just the coolest kid and deserves to smoke outta the best pipe ever invented. I just recently purchased a rocket for myself and a classic for a kid on my mail route that just graduated college. His graduation party is this Saturday i cant wait to give it to him. I asked his dad 'also an avid toker' if he ever heard of a proto pipe and he said whats that? Man are they in for a treat! And a treat that will last a lifetime at that. Im so happy to be the guy to introduce them to this little gem.
This is such a cool story man I grew up in Southern California Los Angeles area. I've been around this pipe all my life since a very young child. Yes my dad and mom were smokers hippies. They had like three of these four of these pipes laying around the house everywhere.. well not everywhere but in their spots.. and now that I'm 46 I'm a smoker as well and this is literally one of the best pipes in the world..
I remember I had a couple of these though the years. The main problem I had with it was that being that Cannabis was illegal, a pipe like this was hard to hide and would instantly get you busted. Plus it was kind of heavy compared to other brass bowls. I remember they had a "premium" one with a leather wrap around the pipe end. Really cool for the times and still relevant, although glass has pretty much taken over.
Had one back in the 80's and loved it! Pretty sure my roomate at the time ended up with it. Glad they're still being made! Bullet proof and easy to clean....
I've had a Proto for over 20 years now. I like that it can be used without excess smoke. I crack the lid open just a little bit and fire through the gap, then close the lid while still inhaling. Combine that with a windproof lighter and there aren't too many places you can't take it.
i used to take my proto to highschool and smoke up in the restrooms or outside in a small area that people never went by. The fact that i could stop the smoke from rising out the pipe was amazing. I remember even smoking During class a good chunk of times with my proto. It was next level for someone who only ever used glass
The first pipe I had was one of these. It was a gift from my father. I found that it could gum up with resin rather quickly compared to others and the brass construction could cause the stem of the pipe to become very hot, very quickly and the body of the pipe could also get very hot if you were trying to smoke a bowl too quickly.
and it would leak resin all over ur hands from the bottom, the mouthpiece would get clogged up fast also. I hated that pipe but its all I had at the time.
@@_R.Stone_ mine had an o-ring in the bottom plate and it was machined so tight that the pipe had to cool off to get it out. The resin and soot clogging was bad there too, like you described.
Lol... Ya... I saw that mouthpiece and was like... Damn that looks even smaller than a fake cig 1hitter bat.. and those clog like a mf constantly even when you only get 3 hits per bowl. And yea the heat... I didnt even think of that. Ouch.
@NicknackPaddywhack Glazed ceramic is ok as well. Harder to make sure it is clean, but I soaked my little bong in rubbing alcohol for a couple days to clean it when I still smoked.
I’ve been a Protopipe owner and user all my life since 1976-7. I have had and lost several. There were many copies around during the time your business was in other hands. Some of the copies were well made but never as good as your originals. Glad to hear you are back in business. I would love to get a ‘Rocket’!!
I knew these pipes were "original" but I didnt know the awesome down to earth people behind them. I feel so honored to own one of these. I wish I knew how old it was and get some of the missing pieces I did not know were missing until this video. lol dang!!!!!!!!!! love from Oregon
About 30-35 years ago when I was a student in the States a cop took it from me and never got it back. Years later found a local shop in Italy that were making these pipes. Took 2 for 17 euros. Still have them. They seem exactly the same but you can even add filters in the mouth piece. I would like one of the original again but they cost without shipping close to 145 $ (For voyager). A bit steep for a memory lane pipe. Other than that, its nice to see em in good health and still creating stuff.
I had one about 35 years ago. I loved it. I never had a bit of trouble with it until I got pulled over and the cop found it and took it. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he still has it and uses it. I don’t smoke pot anymore but for some reason I still miss that pipe. I’m glad they’re still available. I don’t know what I’d do with one now but maybe I’ll get one for my brother.
My partner and I both bought our Proto Pipes in the mid 90s in the Haight. We still have them. They’re just as perfect as the day we bought them. About two years ago I purchased the Rocket. None of these pipes disappoint. They’re a solid product that I’m proud to show off to my friends.
@@colinaudette291Not breaking alone is kind of a huge advantage lmmfao. Unless you lose shit often, you pay for one proto pipe your entire life and that's it. You're always replacing the last glass pipe you broke.
I bought my proto pipe in something like 1979 or 80. Absolutely loved it. Truly the go everywhere pipe. I stopped smoking around 1990 91. Gave all of my paraphernalia to a good friend of mine. It was for the best and I knew the collection would be appreciated. And nowadays I lack the energy to even think about pot ( don't know how Willy Nelson is able to keep with it). But I must admit I wish I had kept the proto pipe for old times sake. The rocket looks great. Gentleman thanks for creating and making that pipe. Truly the best. 👍🔥🌤
I was introduced to the original Protopipe by Bob Ohman, one of your early "distributors". He often talked about Phil and Richard. When Bob was down to his last couple pipes a few years ago I bought one for my daughter. I don't smoke much, never did, but when I do, the quality of the Protopipe just makes it that much more special, and now it also reminds me of my old friend Bob Ohman, who died last fall. Well shoot, I think it's time to warm up the Protopipe again in Bob's honor.
Mine always used to leak a watery/resinous condensation from the bottom that stained my pockets, so I put it down, and picked up a cheap wooden pipe that doesn't have any hole or plug on its bottom. it doesn't look very steampunk, but when it gets gooey, I drag a pipe leaner through it. No complicated cleaning process necessary.
Man my uncle used one of those pipes every day until the day he died! It was old and beat up and I always wondered what brand it was and now I know! Definitely going to buy a couple!
Awesome!! I have wanted a Protopipe since well, forever and got mine gifted by Richard and was given a tour of the museum archives, that was a special treat! And to see the very early issue of sinsemilla tips magazine with a picture of me with my plants was epic.
I’ve had many Protopipe and lost them as well … now I’ve moved onto the Mendopipe, same concept and is equally comparable to the Protopipe !!! My first Mendopipe had a poker issue and I wrote to Phil personally and he totally replaced my Mendopipe and added some extra pokers ! Good product and even better folks … thank you Phil !!!!!
Wow, I am 40 and remember this pipe when I was 14. We were smoking with some older dudes and the cops showed up and we scattered like cockroaches. I ended up with their pipe in my pocket as my reflex wasn't to throw it. I had the pipe up until around 24. I haven't smoked in years and haven't even thought about this pipe in decades. Thanks, youtube for recommending the video.
I remember seeing these in high times magazine, and actually had a friend who had one in the early 80's. I remember him treating it like gold, and I recall him giving too many instructions while using it.
I'm stoned right now. I gave up for 20 years. Glad to be back. I have chronic arthritis in my hip, lower back, shoulder and also PTSD after 13 years Army service. Weed is natural and it works. I will order one of these pipes. Great video!
When I first started smoking I made my own pipes because I figured I shouldn’t be an engineer if I can’t figure out how to make something cool, effective, and non carcinogenic to get me high. I still make pipes to this day. As an avid skier who finds themselves in a similar predicament I love the origin story of this pipe and I can’t wait for my order to arrive!
I've had a few of these in my days. Great for going into the woods with because you'll need nothing. No screens, nothing it has everything. I remember the ONLY thing I hated about this piece was that it clogged VERY EASILY. So it's very high maintenance in that regard. But reliable as you can get! Period!
I prefer glass, but this can't be beat for on the go. I'm 30 and have had several of these since I was 13 and started smoking. It's literally perfect for smoking on the go I always grind up my flower and keep the little tubed packed and I pack the bowl and close the top over top of it so that it'd be ready to go at any given time. Love going for walks with my best friend, stopping at the river and smoking a couple bowls and continuing are walk or bike ride.
My only worry for this design is the fact that some alloys of brass contain lead. Especially before 1990s, machinable brass alloys contained lead for easier machining. Brass oxidizing and vaporizing in the bowl from heating, may cause some lead compounds to be enhaled.
Such a cool concept. Still have mine, bought it in 1996. The manufacturing and machining is very neat. Bowl isn't big enough, gets too hot especially in summer, clogs like no one's business. Use the cleaning rod once and then you get resin clogging the part it stores in (I don't carry isopropyl with me everywhere). After popping out and cleaning the bottom piece, it eventually gets too hard to do without heating it up and doing a full cleaning. The storage container is designed to scoop out the resin from the catch. If you do, that part then has resin on it and also gets stuck when you put it back on, not to mention you now have nasty resin where you are supposed to store fresh flower. Cool concept. Not so cool for every day use.
I have two of these. It's a high-quality product for sure, but you need to clean it constantly or else it'll become impossible to pop the little circle out of the bottom (and thus impossible to clean anymore). Doing this gets old pretty fast, as does the novelty of an "all-purpose" smoking device. I'd recommend it for folks who don't smoke often and don't mind cleaning it every time they smoke. Regular stoners will just clog it up in a week and toss it in the drawer.
I had one about 35 years ago. I loved it. I never had a bit of trouble with it until I got pulled over and the cop found it and took it. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he still has it and uses it. I don’t smoke pot anymore but for some reason I still miss that pipe. I have seen a few other comments like yours. Clearly some people did have problems with them. I wonder if they were using the pipes that were made by that other company that was making them for awhile.
Pop can has worked for me for years but honestly have always wanted one of these my uncle called it the Cadillac of bowls while laughing at my pop can I pulled from behind my shop fridge 😂
Still have mine from the mid 80's! I was thinking it would be cool to have a jumbo one! I call mine a Swiss army pipe and named him Mr. P. And that has been its code name in my circle of friends going on 40 years! So glad to see you guys made it back! The knock off imports while you were gone are nothing but pathetic POS. But had to buy one just for the poker, then gave the rest away. Ha! But you guys need to make a jumbo one with a bowl about the size of a quarter. Then it would be a gentlemanly desk model! I think they would most certainly sell. Good thing you missed what Tommy Chong had to go through!
Protopipe was my go to before it was accidentally driven over, it was replaced by a piece pipe. Both are great for different reasons. Think I'll check out their new products!
My friend met the creator of these back in the 70’s and he told me he wishes he would have bought a full box of them and stashed them because it’s the best pipe of all time.
I had one of those in high school, they are not good for heavy smokers, they are constantly clogged up. all those intricate mechanisms look cool when its brand new but they are always gummed up after a couple uses.. that pipe is for someone who wants to spend more time cleaning the pipe than using it
@@tihspidtherekciltilc5469 I wouldn't go that far. it's a cool little brass hash pipe, but there's better pipes out there. too many gummed up pieces on the proto that get super stuck, especially if you let it sit and get cold before you clean it. and the stem is as small as a capri sun straw, always getting resin on your lips. seriously, the proto is more for a loner smoker that just likes to spend all their time taking it apart and cleaning it. **literally** more time with the maintenance than the use of it. wood is better for hash and glass for weed anyway. brass made for good pipes back in the day, but this was never one of them, and there's just better things out there than brass anymore. don't get me wrong, it was a very well made piece that would last for decades.. it's just too much hassle for heavy use
I can remember my favorite pipe... My mom did laundry and found my pipe and my bag. (1/4 oz of sinsemilla 1985) she confronted me and I blamed it on my brother. she threw it in the trash. about a day later, I dug through the trash and found it.. I dont know what ever happened to it.. years have gone by now... Boy,,, those were the good ole days when cops would just take your weed and tell you to go home.. im sure they either sold it or smoked it.. probably both... I actually like the pot back then better than todays pot...
I bought one of these when I was a kid. It was my prized possession. it came up missing one day after I had a bunch of people at my house. For years I thought I knew who took it but never said anything because I didn't know for a fact. Jump to 2015 and my oldest friend in the world is dying of pancreatic cancer. I go down to south Louisiana because his "friends" were stealing his medicine and constantly trying to talk him into leaving him his belongings. He just needed some help to get them out of there. We were watching TV one night and I looked over and he was dead on the couch next to me. His wife came to his house after his funeral and we were going through some of his stuff and there is my pipe with my initial still scratched into it. I realized he had to be hiding that actively from me for 40 years. I've been to his house literally hundreds of times. I didn't say anything to his wife and I just let her keep it.
