In my opinion, this is by far one of the best videos you’ve ever made. Growing up in LA, you never really think about this. I’ve been going to those since I was a little kid, and it made me happy to see them portrayed in this light.

it’s one thing for you to ask owners to take photos of their location but the fact that you ask to take photos of them is probably such a big deal to them, their children’s children will talk about their family business and they’ll have photos not only of their business but also them, you’re a beautiful soul willem. never change haha such a nice video and I don’t think we will ever understand how much they appreciate you for doing this for them

❤ Willem, what a wonderful project! I LOVE POWER LINES! For the past year I’ve been working on a project documenting sport activities in my local community park. Which happens to be under the power lines! 🤩 The backbone of this documentary project - male portraits of people doing different sports. I love projects such yours - just simple mundane things. It’s a great photographic exercise and it’s something for your soul.

I would posit that there's a lot of beauty in industrial spaces and in the built environment as a whole. I am into this juxtaposition of industrial against 'curated greenness', however. Also, I see you were hanging around Sun Valley at 3:11!

Ah love these photos. Hard to pick a favorite, but 5:30 and 6:54 really speak to me. Great light and I like the story telling. Self-assigning is a neat trick to get you to shoot from a more journalistic approach I think.

awesome vid. as a fellow transplant to socal i've also noticed and admired the greenery under transmission lines. another cool self-assignment could be casual food spots that are unique to LA. mostly i've noticed tons of burger shacks, mom and pop donuts shops (mostly asian owned!), and of course taco stands.

Nobody wants to work or live under power lines - understandingly. The plant nurseries don't seem to mind - probably that real estate is reasonably cheap for that reason. It's a great photography project and good on you to notice that relationship!!

Crazy video as usual! As someone who is inexperienced in photography, I find it difficult to replicate the effects and atmosphere of your photographs without post-processing. That's why I wanted to ask you how much is due to the film and how much to the post-production, if present? And what 120 mm film do you usually use?
@WillemVerb
@WillemVerb Год назад
I think it’s mostly the subjects and light. I shot across 3 different formats for this project. Lots of the photos were digital on a Fujifilm camera as well. So it’s certainly not one specific process.

As a mag editor, I can tell you that this is a good story. Great instinct. You should pitch this around, and I'm convinced someone will pick it up. I do these mini "commissions" with a friend. We regularly agree on a specific task for a roll and battle it out once the pics are in. It's great fun and a really good way to stay active and keep trying out new stuff. We live in different cities, so it's also a good way to stay in touch.

You won't see that in my country (with a few exceptions, probably). First, we don't have that many overland power-lines by far, secondly, nobody would voluntarily spend their working hours directly under power-lines for an extended time, and lastly, nobody would want to buy and eat vegetables being grown under the constant influence of so much electromagnetic radiation.
