A Pre-Fabricated House in Australia's Most Remote and Harsh Landscape (House Tour)

Traditionally, homes and pre-fabricated house's situated in the Australian landscape relied upon an imported architectural design from Europe, imposing on the landscape and unsuitable for the rural living experience. Courtyard House is a pre-fabricated house by CHROFI that challenges this former standard, instead embracing the harshness of the Australian environment.
The home works quietly by blending into its environment. The modules that make up the structure stand side-by-side and are linked together by a central courtyard. This alters the home’s sense of space, as the views extend through the rooms in the pre-Fabricated house and then further out into the landscape, successfully connecting interior and exterior areas.
As a pre-Fabricated house, the materiality of the building was dictated by weight, as the house was transported to the site on the back of a truck. Building a pre-Fabricated house within a controlled off-site environment offers ability to speed up construction times and manage wastage.
As prefabricated houses are built under a roof offsite, the home itself is protected from the elements while vastly minimising the impact to the site. For Courtyard House, CHROFI was drawn to Australian hardwood for the primary cladding; its natural finish speaking to the surrounding landscape of gumtrees.

Love the series- I just wish the “tours” had more of a tour and less short, panning shots of spaces in no particular order.

What is amazing about the pre-fabricated home is that it doesn't look pre-fabricated. The use of an Australian wood for the cladding gives it a very natural look. It's a very beautiful home.

103.4 kilometres ( 64.25 miles) from its location at Mungo Brush, north of Hawk's Nest in the Myall Lakes region, mid north coast of New South Wales to the John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle - a major tertiary referral hospital). A house in the countryside shouldn't need a "courtyard". The courtyard is the open countryside. I am not an architect but I have been involved in construction for over 30 years and when I think of courtyards, I am reminded of the classic Roman house design with a central "outdoor" area. You can still see it even in the design of old Italian residential complexes. If this house was in Newtown or anywhere inner suburbs of Sydney, the courtyard would be ideal. In the countryside, even the horses would be shaking their heads. Not for me. For the Australian bush, give me an old school sandstone cottage, late 19th century preferably, with a tin roof any day. And there's a reason the cost is not disclosed despite the many comments requesting the same. Apologies in advance for the brutal honesty.

I appreciate the intent to let the house be a part of the immediate surrounding landscape. However that surrounding landscape isn’t pretty. It is harsh, empty, without visible life. Like a desert. That to me is not poetic or at all pleasing. It will certainly limit the appeal of the house to potential future owners. The house itself has its own beauty and a nice feel.
@blackie8306
@blackie8306 3 года назад
Don't forget he said all he could hear was the birds and the crashing of waves. So there's a beach close by, and knowing Australian bush, it's no doubt a home for wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, wombats, and all sorts of parrots and other birdlife. None were shown in this video, but they would be out on the open plain at dusk.
@pamtopham1746
@pamtopham1746 2 года назад
The drastic landclearing around the house is called a firebreak. You're right in this case it looks pretty bare and stark. You can see in the drone views the extensive coastal bushland - beautiful but once fire season starts in Australia, living so close to bush means your risk of being burnt out increases. See footage of the 2019 - 2020 fires.

Sad that this only highlights the aesthetics and that we can’t get an understanding of the practicalities of rooms, storage and functionality. I love the look but can’t really tell what the home is like. I think design seed do a better job of presenting their properties.

You really need to look into your camera crew’s work. Unless it is done in purpose for privacy reasons, it is frustrating to not be able to get a good glance at the house itself and details. Extremely fast or far away shots of the house in contrast with the longer shots on the sky and moving clouds ,and a gate opening.

Firebreak. Dominant coastal wallum country species are eucalypts ("gum trees"), acacias spp. ( wattles) casuarinas ( she oaks, swamp oaks) - highly adapted to extended dry seasons and years of droughts but also unfortunately highly flammable in bushfire seasons. They used to be decades apart but not any more.
