A Prehistoric Tale (Jochen Hippel) vs Nearly There (Jogeir Liljedahl) Amiga Soundtrack Battle

In 1990, a group of highly talented Atari ST programmers and artists known as The Lost Boys released the game A Prehistoric Tale on both the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga via publisher Thalion. The game was "heavily inspired" (ie. a blatant ripoff!) of the Commodore 64 game Dino Eggs, released way back in 1983.
Legendary Atari ST musician Jochen Hippel (Mad Max) ported the game from the Atari ST to the Amiga, and beefed up the soundtrack using the power of the Amiga's Paula soundchip. The title music is rated by many as one of the Amiga's finest compositions.
In 1993, Virtual Dreams and Fairlight released the Amiga demo "Full Moon" containing a Protracker module called "Nearly There" by Jogeir Liljedahl. The tune is an almost exact copy of Jochen Hippel's tune, and if you play the 2 tunes one after the other, you'd find it pretty difficult to notice any differences.
The main controversy surrounding this tune is the fact that Jochen Hippel was never credited by Jogeir in the module, or as part of the demo credits by Virtual Dreams and Fairlight. Back in 2000, Jochen was completely unaware of Jogeir's version, and it turns out that Jogeir has a bit of a reputation in the scene for "borrowing" music from others without crediting them.
Here's some technical specifications of the 2 tunes:
Track name: A Prehistoric Tale (Theme)
Composer: Jochen Hippel
Year: 1990
Format: COSO
Duration: 6:18
Size: 59kb
Track name: Nearly There
Composer: Jogeir Liljedahl
Year: 1993
Format: Protracker
Duration: 6:29
Size: 199kb
In an effort to hear the differences between the two tunes, I've mixed them together, with a switch every 4 bars or so. In certain places, one tune had a significantly different sound, so I kept that section a little longer.
The Jogeir remixed version has a slightly faster tempo than Jochen's original tune, and I've kept the original speeds intact. The Jogeir remixed version has a noticeable end part, where the tune changes quite significantly from the original tune.
I'm curious as to which tune the majority of people prefer, so if you could vote in the unofficial thumbs up/down poll below, that would be great! And unlike a certain Atari ST molerat that pretends comments are welcome on his videos, everyone may discuss this tune here! :)
Codetapper in July 2021!
PS: If you would like to compare the Atari ST tune to the Amiga: • A Prehistoric Tale (Th...

The Jogeir Lilledahl version is bigger because the ProTracker module format doesn't support synthetic sounds data, also, Jogeir had to combine the bass and the drums into one channel making use of multiple samples (for every bass note). The COSO format is somehow similar to TFMX, supporting not only synthesised sounds but also a combination of these into one channel (drums and bass played on the same channel, like with Turrican for the AMIGA)

Jochen‘s version is the original composition. It was his song. So it will always be the one to credit and the „best version“. However, Jogeir always did a marvelous job in his adaptions. Music Wise i like both but it was Jochen‘s Song and always will be.

This is silly. EVERYONE in the scene knew both songs. There's no way Jogeir was trying to pass this as his own composition.

If you wanted to do another of these comparisons how about Jochen Hippel's Enchanted Land intro music and Rob Hubbard's Lightforce?

Firstly, the original version brought us a beautiful melody and I must thank Jochen for that. Secondly, it's very sad that Jogeir didn't credit Jochen in the module info. It was very common to remix an existing music and it was a standard to mention it. No excuses here! That sad, I must say I like Jogeir's remix better. Obviously he used Amiga's Paula chip capabilities more. Also his ending is wonderful and perfectly fits nostalgic (or even sad?) mood of the tune, while original Jochen's version seems like the author didn't know how to finish the song. Both versions are great, however the later one is better.

Maybe it had to be repeated, the tune is used in the title of the game. We never know what it is in the mind of the composers..

Ironically, coming from an Amiga childhood, I found this tune only two years ago or something, in Jogeir Liliedahl's ripped-off version. I was amazed at the superb quality of this composition, and for the same reason, I was not surprised at all learning that it's originally Jochen Hippel's work. Unironically, this is one of the most complex, perfect compositions I have ever heard in my life. This could be performed with an entire orchestra, and I'm not kidding. Leaving all controversy aside, I learned to love and appreciate both versions, as Jogeir's interpretation actually adds something to the original. I also love the fact that people still find inspiration in this tune. Someone actually performed it on guitar as a rock version, and many people such as Sebastian Majerczyk have merged the qualities of both versions into their own remixes and covers. Be sure to check it out.

Now, Hippel's one isn't really a "version" is it? It's the original song itself (maybe a bit influenced from Martin Galway - Parallax but that's another case ;)) Jogeir did great job porting it to Amiga mod (especially if the original is COSO 7V) but this case is clear, so, Mad Max wins this round obviously.

Have to say I just found this out (as I never played Prehistoric Tale) not that long ago on Codetappers website... I had no clue... To Jogeirs "defence" "Nearly There" was in a demo right? and coming from C64 demos, and later Amiga demos there where a lot of either ripped (exactly the same code, because they had no musician) and/or really heavily influenced music from a game... And I do remember a lot of games with music I thought was the originals but turned out also not to be.... Anyway... different formats also, so there is that... it's not a straight rip... It's a copy... As I have only listened to the Jogeir version, I do favor that one sort of... would probably be the other way around if I have heard Jochen Hippel's version though... it's hard... Hippel is using software synth I guess, and Jogeir is samples so there is that also... Jogeir was a master manipulator with samples 🙂 But ofc Credit to Jochen for a superb music piece... and Credit Jogeir for the a great tracker conversion (with added touches that I actually think improves some of it)... ---edit But a credit to Jochen in the sample list (as per usual) would have been the right thing to do ofc... ---edit2 And we are all grownups nowadays... but back then... nope... and I bet this was pretty much hard work, and I was 19... same as Jogeir... I bet he thought he made a perfect copy of a professional musician he liked and that would be like doing a Depeche mode song in a demo... would I have credited Depeche mode... I don't think so, it would be implied sort of and my 19 year old self would have spent countless of hours to make it... well that would be my 19 year old self I think... now my almost 50 year old self would not have done that at all... ofc... ---edit3 Here though (a bit older :-) Jogeir is giving credit where credits is due... on he's remix... www.amigaremix.com/?id=3541

Great comparison, I'm Team Jochen in this case. Also, if you do a cover version you don't give it a new name without crediting the original author. On the other hand Jochen "borrowed" a few tunes, too, in the Amberstar Soundtrack. Boy, was I surprised to learn that Amberstar secretly made me an Enya fan. ;) But, in his defense, sources say that he was asked to do use exactly those tunes.

I only have Jochen's version in FastTracker II format and Jogeir's version as the ProTracker mod. Both great tunes but I lean ever so slightly towards Jogeir's version as my preference. The reason being that I was an Amiga user and not an Atari user so I had no exposure to the original until I found the FT2 version. What I would really like to hear is a modern version done with a DAW like, say FL Studio, Bitwig or (if you really must) Ableton. 😁

I find this interesting because I was watching a Let's Play of a game I played on the Sega Genesis as a kid and a track from the game was commented on as being ripped off from a song called Beetlemusic that Jogeir apparently released in 1994. The Sega game came out in 1993, however, so after seeing this I'm wondering who was "inspired" by who. The track in question: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FqGUay2p-Sw.html

lol.. how is this ever going to work? Users can see thumbs up, yes. Thumbs downs affect the order of comments displayed in "top comments" mode (although obviously not if you pin it) they never have a number after them.. and only the channel _owner_ can hit the "love" icon 😂 I think you'd be better off linking to some poll site in your pinned comment PS: The Mad Max original by far for me.. the PWM on the lead is much more chiptuney.. but it's great to have 2 good Amiga versions of an amazing tune
