In July 2012, my husband & I visited America from New Zealand, to where I have two sons living in Michigan. One of our daughter-in-laws took us on a three day visit to Mackinaw Island & we had such a wonderful time exploring the island & looking at the beautiful homes & gardens. I really enjoyed revisiting Mackinaw Island again, & seeing the enthusiasm of this young man & the pride he so obviously takes in these immaculate gardens.
Ok, here’s a person who knows what he’s talking about with a passion for it. What a pleasure to watch, and thank you 1000% for just letting him talk. I finally moved back to Michigan after many years away and have visited the island a few times introducing my family to it. After watching this I’ll be sure to take the garden tour next time. Outstanding job to you both and never bored with the details!
We just came back from our annual family trip to Mackinac Island to start the summer. The only way to get around is by bicycle or horse and carriage. There is an 8 mile loop to walk or bike around the island, which is so beautiful with vistas of Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac. There are so many Michigan "cottages" with gardens so there is endless inspiration. The whole island is such a gem and we are lucky to have it in Michigan.
Talk about your labor of love! So much work every year the history of this island is incredible. They did a great job articulating the different variables of this magical place. The gardens and stone walls are truly magnificent!
What a talented young man! It's amazing that the area has the worst winters but the plants come back strong every spring. Thank you for sharing this tour. It was truly enjoyable.
Mackinaw Island is a very special place, “stuck in time”. No cars, nearly all horse and carriages. Love hearing the clippity clips of the horses. The gardens are fabulous and Jack Barnwell really knows his business.
Stunning! You can hear his passion and pride, in the way he speaks of this gorgeous garden and landscape...as he should be proud. I loved this tour..thank you, Laura!
How on earth did he get that knowledge? What a talent. Obviously, he was born with part of that talent, you don’t teach some of what he accomplished. That was a thrill for me. The pure manpower to lay those many stepping stones was unbelievable. Breathtaking gardens. Loved every minute!
I'm from Michigan originally and can remember visiting Mackinac Island many times with my family.Thank you for this wondering garden tour! Jack Barnwell is a talented landscape designer!
Mackinac Island is one of my favorite places...so many beautiful memories on this island...such a pretty place ...absolutely loved hearing the history of the house and gardening
So passionate about his work and I loved hearing him talk about it all from what flows underneath to the reasons for color or water features........ She was a great interviewer also,.....asked good questions. Loved this video and this place!!! His designs are a dream and I can see why he has over 200 clients!!
I have lived in Michigan all of my life and have yet to make it to the island. My sister got to spend some time there, working one year, and just loved it before going away to Emmaus Bible College in Chicago. I did make it to Chicago. Now I have to make it to the island. It is so beautiful! This has just inspired me to make a plan to go this summer.
I’m 2 1/2 hrs away & it’s been years since I’ve been there😊 I’ve got to put in a trip to Mackinaw Island before summer’s end!!! This garden tour was amazing!!!
Last summer we went to the island. A lot of houses have very beautiful garden and flowers . I saw some Damascus roses one house. Very beautiful! Also saw some unknown beautiful flowers.
I've lived here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for over 50 years. Love visiting Mackinac Island. I guarantee I've never seen these beautiful gardens so close up. Thanks for the tour! Well done.
I went to Mackinac Island this June. I remember biking along West Bluff to the Grand Hotel and I was amazed at the landscaping of every house. It is so beautiful and such an inspiration for gardeners.
Wow! I could easily live there. Coming from the south western part of Nova Scotia, we have very similar weather (harsh winters as well). I am glad you asked him of his favourite flowers for both shade and sun. Thanks for the tour.
What a wonderful and educational tour by both of you capable people! I can't wait to come to the Island and see this for myself, except for the private gardens part of course! Thank you so much!
We have been to Mackinac Island and all the summer people pretty much gone ,but it was wonderful the people were wonderful ..I can’t wait to go there for a summer vacation. Maybe to that hotel looks beautiful
This video and the gardens are just gorgeous if I ever win the lottery I would love to go over there and spend at least a week or two just walking around and looking at all the beautiful gardens
Wonderful garden and tour! Thank you Erin and Jack of Barnwell Landscape. Too bad we couldn't see a before picture because it sounds as though the transformation was extensive! The stone work alone must have been a tremendous project, not to mention all the beautiful, well-chosen plants. Well done, stupendous!
Thank you for sharing your garden with me. I just love how it’s all coming 🫑🍅🪴👍together and growing so nicely! I love to garden and I also make garden videos. I in my 3rd year gardening. I have so much to still learn. I’d love it if we could learn more from each other! Happy gardening 👨🌾 🌷🌼🌻🌺🌸🌹🐝
This is an amazing video!! Thank you so much. I have an old pink Victorian in the smoky mountains in Pigeon Forge and it needs serious landscaping. The house is 128 yrs old and started as a log cabin which the current house has been built around and theres never been any landscaping done and the way the land is laid out in this video is very similar to some of my land so this was perfect for me to see! I love your videos on perennials too. I am not plant savvy but you are encouraging me with your videos. Thank you so much!!!
