Companies tend to be great at solving problems that nobody wants to have solved.
How do we avoid this, and ensure our hard work is worthwhile?
The key is to get in touch with your customers and take a lot of notes.
Learn how to ask people about the problems they have, not about the solution you’re building.
If you want to create a podcast service, talk to podcasters about their biggest challenges. If they say they struggle with distribution, ask them about a time they had success in that area, and a failure in that area.
Try to find 10-12 people who have that same story, or until you get bored.
Listen to their problems. Don’t focus on your solution.
Don’t give them anything except: “I’m thinking about building something in your space that might help. I don’t know what it should be yet, but I really want to hear from you, and what problems and challenges you have.”
That’s how the conversation should start.
