A Protestant Visits a Catholic Church in the Round (and Stumbles Upon a Catholic Funeral)

I figured we'd need to put things off when I showed up at Little Flower Catholic Church and discovered they were setting up for a funeral, but Fr. Herzog (the priest there) insisted this was part of the life of the church and that we should see it. This is a unique and beautiful church and I'm grateful for the chance to get a glimpse at how Catholicism works at the end of life.

I think a good perspective on praying for the dead is that though we experience life "in time," sequentially, that does not bind God to judge the soul of the person sequentially since God is out of time, omnipresent, so just because "in time" we are praying on behalf of that person after their death "in time," that does not mean God is somehow forced to go "well, sorry, that prayer got to me too late." Because we exist in time we do something does matter, however, that does not mean that God can't choose to act outside of the rules of existence imposed on us, otherwise we would be force to deny the possibility of miracles.

Every Protestant I've ever met believed in Purgatory, they just didn't know it. The conversation usually goes something like this: "Impure things cannot be in the presence of the perfectly holy God, right?" "Right." "And St. Paul tells us that no one is perfect, right?" "Right." "So nobody dies perfectly pure and holy, right?" "Right." "So does that mean that nobody can ever be in the divine presence in Heaven?" "Well, no." "So what happens to our imperfections/impurities/earthly attachments that we still have when we die?" "Well, God wipes that away somehow." That right there -- that "somehow" -- is Purgatory. That's a purgation/purification after death for those who are saved and going to Heaven. The Church doesn't teach that Purgatory has to look like Dante's Divine Comedy (and it never did). The only difference is that Catholics try to articulate what the concept of necessary purgation/purification is, while most Protestants simply handwave it (but still believe in the fundamental concept).

I even got my communion but stopped after that and was dragged into the Jehova's Witness. I swear they are the instrument of the devil, I have never felt more further from god than when I was around them. I didn't get baptized but my father did so my goal is to help drag my father back into the light of the lord. He disagrees with their doctrines and is just on the cusp of leaving and I think the lord placed me at this time and place. If (by the power of the holy spirit) I can drag him out of that organization it will be my testimony. Also I am still deciding my denomination and would love to here all your recommendations. If you ever get to visit Malta, do visit the Rotunda of Mosta, also known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady. It was completed in the 1860s and is a really beautiful church in the round. In 1942 during bombardment of a nearby air base, a Luftwaffe bomb fell on the roof of the dome while parishioners were assembled, waiting for Mass to begin. Amazingly, the bomb became embedded in the dome, which remained structurally sound, and nobody was killed. If you visit you can look up and see the slight difference in decoration where the bomb was. Of course the local people felt this was a miracle. I believe it was superb engineering! 🇲🇹

6:00 rewatch this sections - its not about specifically removing the rail its about separating the church's "holy part" and people. Everything is Holy.
@grant3287
@grant3287 Год назад
The original poster is correct: no where in Vatican II did it say “destroy the communion rails, destroy the High Altar, place the Eucharist off to the side in an unimportant place, let lay people run intro the altar to play priest and use their unconsecrated hands to falsely administer the Holy Eucharist, let lay people receive communion in their hand without kneeling, etc etc.” With all due respect to the responder, that is an erroneous statement. The Altar IS a sacred place and should be treated as such. God has always ordained the Altar as a set apart sacred place. In the Old Testament, the Holy of Holies was where Gods presence appeared (the New Covenant fulfillment of this is the Real Presence of The Eucharist). The Holy of Holies was covered by a veil, and no one was allowed to enter except the High Priest, and even he would only enter once a year to offer the blood of Sacrifice and incense. The Sacrifice was offered by the Priest for himself and for the sins of the people. Well, Traditionally in Catholicism this is how we have always understood the Altar and the Mass. This understanding is preserved in Traditional Parishes (usually Latin Mass or Eastern Catholicism/Byzantine Rite). Lay people storming into the Sanctuary destroys this symbolism and downgrades the Altar from a Sacred Space of Sacrifice to God, to a normal place. It also diminishes the priesthood. In Eastern Catholicism, the icon wall is closed off during the consecration and lay people never go into the Sacred. This sort of reverence is important and must not be dismissed as something of “the past.” Up until modern times (which has coincided with widespread loss of faith), lay people did not presume to enter the Altar. Now, lay people, in a spirit of pride, storm into the sanctuary and impose roles unto themselves that have had disastrous effects on the Church’s Liturgy. The fundamental problem with the modern desire (influenced by feminism and other modern sensibilities) to have lay people storming the altar, administering the Eucharist, or having a girl version of altar boys is a spirit of pride and presumption. For some people of course, it is ignorance, but regardless… it is undeniable that the Altar has been desacralized by the Hasty Reforms made in the 60s and 70s. The Church has existed for thousands of years (and even longer when you consider the Church’s lineage is the Old Testament). Only since the 1960s/1970s has it become common for lay people to go up to the altar and treat it like a play thing without reverence. The results of this are clearly disastrous and have been documented in full. There must be a return to solemnity and reverence in the Mass as we must offer to God rightly ordered Worship. I say this with all due respect and no insult intended, but rather, I want to express how the Church has always understood the sacredness of the altar throughout its entire existence.
@openminds8765

@@grant3287 Living in a specific period of time is OK to a point (because it is history and important to remember) but living on one specific tradition is too much importance in the past and not moving on (there are many points of tradition to learn from not just one small piece of history). I dont think God realllllly cares about an alter rail or not he is more concerned that you turn to Him (in whatever form that takes for you in the present stage of life). Don't YUCK someone else YUM because of your limited understanding (everyone is limited in understanding not a slam on you specifically)

I looked at their website and noticed they offer a Traditional Latin Mass. In your tour of Catholicism have you visited a Traditional (FSSP or ICKSP) church and dove into the older architecture and liturgy?

When I saw the video title - I thought a church in the round would be some 1960s hippy dippy thing & was surprised that the church was built in 1947.

Fr.Herzog joke about the Holy water was funny! 😂 Would be great if you visited/attend a Traditional Latin Mass or a parish with Latin Mass. Would love to see a video from your perspective.

Little Flowers pastor, Father Herzog, offers a Latin mass at 9:15 on Sundays. Unfortunately the bishop has told him he must cease offering it on Pentecost Sunday. He was in tears relaying the news to the faithful.

@@tommygirl61 Oh no! I will pray for Fr.Herzog, he must be heartbroken 😓. Our Lady will protect our faithful priests. Thank you for your comment! The Mass of the Ages will prevail, God willing. 🙏🏽

Having a wake is so embedded in my understanding of a person's passing. For me it is essential, not because of the concern of purgatory, but to be together with the family and the community to move through the grief. It has always been a comfort when a loved one has died and also a way to support the family during the trauma of a death.

I was wondering, why do Catholics use a lot of incense in their funerals?

Thanks Matt...it's so nice to see you focus on the similarities on the fact that Christ is the central figure of our belief and that what each of us of any denominations should do is try to imitate Him instead of playing who's wisest and judging each other. I always remember Jesus and the Apostles leaving a village and hearing about a man performing healing in his name and the apostles reaction of freaking out and wanting to get to the guy and all....and remember Jesus's reaction of telling the Apostle that the Devil would be dumb to perform miracle in his name cause that would create Division in his kingdom. And I keep remembering that we can easily see right there that division is not part of the solution it is weakening us all. I hope that one day...every denominations stops wanting to be the bestest and remember Jesus and the fact that he was a uniting is a uniting factor...he was not rejecting people he was and is accepting people. As long as our different denominations judge instead of just opening their arms and heart to the others...we're in our heads... and not in our heart. And last time I check God probes our hearts and not our heads. I pray that one day...our different denominations humble themselves and take the other denominations hand in theirs to finally be reunited. God Bless you all. Mike

There’s a quote believed to have been said by Queen Elizabeth I- “There is but one Jesus Christ, my lords, everything else is mere trifles.’ Pretty sure i either butcher or paraphrased but you get the idea.

In the 7 books of the Old Testament that were removed from the Bible had teaching prayers for the dead are found in those 7 books. Martin Luther’s first Bible had not only removed those 7 books & more Genius, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Esther, Job, Ecclesiastes, and parts from 3 other books from the Old Testament, but also many New Testament: Hebrews, James, Jude, Revelations, Mathew, Luke, John, Acts, Romans. Luther’s Canon had a total of 25 books. 🎚

Matt, what you said at the end of the video about the baptismal font being at the front of our catholic Churches, reminds me of something when I was Protestant (almost 20 years ago). I used to always wonder why the baptismal is kept far out of reach of the congregation. Do you know if there’s a reason?

Wow! Matt gets it! The Mass is our participation in the eternal, perpetual worship in heaven! But I wish the priest had elaborated a bit on the difference between salvation and Purgatory. Purgatory has no effect on salvation. Only those who are already judged and saved to to Purgatory. It removed the effects of sin, not it's eternal consequence.

The crucifix scene above the altar is not just about Jesus asking John to take care of His Mother. There’s a much more sublime meaning. Mary is mother to us all. John represents all humanity. He is our brother. Therefore she is our mother too. I realise the priest wasn’t going to engage in a theological debate but ,still ,truth should be defended .

13:00 This is an even more poignant question when talking about the Catholic church... The question that Matt asked is "What is the purpose of this church, here - what's the goal." Less specifically, much more generally, one of the unique things about the Catholic Church is the "ownership" of the community, by the specific parish, and cities "split up" across several different parishes. The concept of subsidiarity reigns supreme, where the people closest to an issue are the ones best-suited to handle that issue. Even though I left Catholicism in high school for a protestant church when I came to faith, I've always appreciated this doctrine and idea - and how, at least in concept, it leaves no one out. Everyone is under the "umbrella" of the church. As the Catholic church has declined in influence, especially in the North, this has been lost, and our cities are poorer for it.
