My wife and I are separated right now and this channel has really helped me stay strong through it all. Some of these poems really put suffering into perspective for me. My wife initiated this separation and we have 3 young kids in the house that I am having to spend time away from. There has been no infidelity, abuse, or addiction issues. It's simply me not being the husband that I am capable of being. That's tough to deal with, but it isn't unique, and it isn't the worst thing that could happen. We're going to counseling and she is still hanging on to hope that we can make it through. I've been working on my end (as much as I can without being there) but I have a hard time managing my emotions when I don't see results, but the last line of this poem has really helped me to keep focus: "Learn to labor, and to wait."

I hope for nothing but the best. I will pray for your marriage tonight. I know this comment is 5 months old and a lot can happen in that time, but I will pray nonetheless for what may have been lost in that time may yet be regained. I will pray for you to find strength and to become the best man that you can be.

Hope you dont mind me saying this, but it could be she is facing perimenopause or menopause. A lot of relationships break up st this time because women (I am female) can behave erratic due to hormonal changes. Some Women dont even recognize this when we are going through it. Please read up on it. Hormone replacement can help settle things down. Peace

One of the most powerful and evocative recitals that I have ever heard in my life. Each time I listen to this piece, it helps me acknowledge the fact that life is a stormy sea and we must sail through the violence of the natural elements until we reach our shores.

Beautifully read and arranged. I have put verses 1-3 to melody and piano and am getting ready to render the remaining verses. The beauty of this poem lies in the way that it builds and expands outward into the sands of time as it nears completion. It begins with the reality of mortality and our finiteness then opens up into the vastness of existence and our connection with each other. I have been inspired and brought out of darkness so many times by the words of our ancestors, and am so grateful to count Longfellow as one of those voices. My hope is that my arrangement of this lyrical piece can also inspire some future shipwrecked brother or sister. Good stuff.

...Can you hear that? ...Well? Can you hear it? ...Please, tell me you can hear it. ...it’s the Hum! Do you know what that Hum is? ...It’s your courage to come. Know that there is no challenge that we cannot overcome. We shall win...and we shall do it with courage. every crum. The Hum - hums ahead of our hearts, shielding all precious to soul. The Hum of our hearts...that song, the hymn of courage, of strength, confidence, has come, and doubters of courage and discouragers are dumb, and if you doubt what you have, if you do doubt each starry crumb of your courage beating, singing, burning and humming within you, then you will remain glum. A courageless heart is a soul numb. Now let this world be our fearless drum, for courage and its rise; it’s time for us to remove our conformity-disguise. From courageous fire rising over our hearts - we - the matchless - shall beat the ordinary enemy, for fear is no competition to the Hum to drum the world. All threats, great...small, past, present and future - we have, we can...we will overcome; we will overcome all fear, every enemy, each obstacle, every and each challenge, and we will do it with courage. We are the hum... the only hum to drum this world. So everybody listen. listen to your hum...hear the hum of others. It’s there...always there, and it never goes, can never die...the hum is always passed on. Del Winterbottom

When you cry, the soul of the universe freezes in dark The flowers stop breathing in the heartache of the park; And the trees get scared, their throats go dry and -leaves -they start to loose, In agony of the moment- the rivers through your tears - find a distant use... Everything goes silent when you cry my little girl, everything keeps mum The ocean loses the greed of the waves and their melody of drums! The eagles break the flight for their wings ache wholly The wind’s war with itself gets silly, empty, lonely... When you cry, sky’s eternity turns into massive chains And every tear of yours envenoms the earth’s vains! Like lost treasures of history -When tears roll down your face, Makes God look in the mirror and doubt her own grace! Because when you cry my little girl, the soul of existence cries too The white flag of hope becomes blue like you, the dreams become illusions, the reality transforms into jail; The wide roads turn into narrow paths of the same direction, And the mirror shows nothing more but a reflection! Because when you cry, everything looks at you and asks itself “why?” ...

At a yard sale I paused at the sight of words "tell me not in mournful numbers life is but an empty dream...." The sound of this stopped me cold.. pretty well entranced. how had I lived so long having never heard this poem? (of course I bought the trivet which had the words in iron...) who is the author, I needed to know, you mean the man whose "The Children's Hour" we read in fifth grade? 'grave Alice, laughing Allegra -- and Edith with golden hair'. The author of 'there was a little girl, who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead; when she was good she was very, very good; and when she was bad she was horrid' That was the Longfellow I had heard.

Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o’er life’s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Isn't it amazing that there can be those that have such a love for life and those that can't wait to lose it. Where can I find the flame that he found. Where has my will gone. Why has the devil stolen my heart and left in its place nothing. What good of a world to an artist when all the colors turn grey. How sorry I am in this state. How each step is a mountain. How much I yearn to want again. A life of no desire is a burden with no success, no joy. Why then, should I prolong this. For others I know. For the child who's colors still show. A life is no longer mine; it never was. Living is no longer for me; it never was.

@@AdonaiForMe Hello, thank you for taking the time to offer kind words; I appreciate them and you. (: I just thought I'd let you know I'm in a better place. I have bipolar disorder (not to excuse my despair) and that was just a low, a dark cloud, hanging over me; but it passed, as they all do. I'd like to tell others to hang on for all the precious life yet still here, and that every hell passes, though we can't see through the blinding flames. And I think even in our darkest hours, we may still make a heaven for those yet to come into the world; and lift those drowning in sorrow. I think, beyond all want and desire for ourselves, that giving freely of love and goodwill may keep the horrors of life from taking hold our hearts and shine a beautiful light, if only for but a moment in time. If only a short verse to sing, may the notes echo gracefully into the ripples of eternity.
