Luved Laing's treatment of this. All the subjective and idiosyncratic ideas about what is "real" (and what isn't) that result from this ontological issue is huge in the experience and its treatment, wouldn't you say? Would you be interested in reviewing Nathaniel Branden's "The Disowned Self" ... in my view a seminal treatment of the phenomenon of self-alienation in the general population? Very brief read.
