A PURPLE Montana Agate!? One of our RAREST Finds Yet & Gorgeous Moss Agates Everywhere!

In this one, we head out to one of my favorite spots on the Yellowstone and hit the jackpot! Beautiful moss agates everywhere, rainbow jaspers, petrified and agatized wood, a beautiful Montana agate limb cast and to top it all of off is one of the rarest agates I've ever found, a PURPLE Montana Agate!!! It was one fantastic day for sure! After we get back to the shop, we get everything cleaned off and get some good closeups on all of our finds! I hope you all enjoy this awesome hunt, and I will have another one out very soon!

The rocks in Montana are so gorgeous, and yes, I agree banded chert is not given enough love. It is, as another person mentioned, so much fun for those of us with physical challenges to get out in the field. Being able to “go there” with you and your family makes my day, over and over again. O U T S T A N D I N G THEO . It doesn't get any better than that . I too found a softer blue agate , lighter than yours . It's the shape of a pear , but the size of a medium egg , but perfectly cut in half . I was lucky to find it at all. I would love the opportunity to hunt on the Yellow Stone river for these beauties you'r finding . Recently I found another beauty , a Carnelian agate similar in shape but longer , and cut in half . It had betrothal bubbles and tiny Druzy everywhere .I gave it to my mom just before her last surgery , It serves many issues , but security and good health are the main reason . Second reason , is because it's the same surgery that killed her twice on the table . I gave it to her for support. And she came out of surgery without any issues. So the rocks and things we find on the river banks , and gravel bars , can actually assist in the healing process , and it promotes longevity amongst many other positive attributes Sorry about the book I wrote Theo lmao. I was thrilled about that green jasper! Had it not been for the purple, that definitely wouldve been "find of the day" for me😄 and i am very hopeful about a few of them! Most are just typical moss agates but theres definitely a handful in there i have hopes for!

Wow! That area you were finding all those states and petrified wood is just stunning!! I could spend a whole week there just turning over every beautiful rock!! I think I might need to bring a sturdy garden wagon I could tow around a fill with rocks😁 Sometimes I see stones I want you to pick up so I can check them out, but there's no way of yelling," Hey what about that one over there!"😀 Nice collection though. I am in New Zealand, so little chance of coming there at the moment. Can you tell me the name of the place so I can read up about what has made all those beautiful rocks.?

Definitely know what you mean!😂 we may have ti do a rock hunt live stream sometime so i can let everyone pick the rocks that come home🤣 just need ti find a place that would have cell reception😅 and most of my river hunts are on the Yellowstone river in Montana here in the states😄 its a 600 mile long river that cuts through an enormous amount of different geologic exposures and is fed by yellowstone lake in yellowstone national park, which are big contributing factors for the variety that we find along the river😄 you really never know what you might find on the yellowstone!

What a great trip , your honey, you doggies and rocks. Does it get any better... well, a bit warmer with the sun out,not now I'm being picky. Yes i only know that they are mussels because i went down a rabbit hole a while back to figure out the species name; they are fatmucket freshwater mussels, and with a name like that they are hard to forget🤣 but they have amazing mother of pearl and take a phenomenal polish so i always get very excited every time i find those, really an unflattering name for such a pretty shell though😂

Okay, so let's get this out of the way first... OMGPURPLEHOLYSNOTTHAT'SAMAZING!!!!! Now, having said that, it was a GREAT day for mossy agates too. You got some real prizes that should cut VERY well. By the way, if you love banded chert and agatized wood, you HAVE to make a trip down here to Texas - I can bring you to some material that would blow your mind. Wood 3 inches thick that you can see through, and chert with colors and patterns that are unbelievable. I'd love to send you some samples or at least some photos.

Honestly thats the beauty of the yellowstone😄 it is a massive river about 600 miles long, and there are prime agates anywhere downstream of billings, so you can pretty much stop anywhere along the river and find some good ones!😄

This issue has probably been discussed before. But I'm a new follower. So I don't know. I've been hunting on the Yellowstone river three times. All three were late summer/early fall. The problem I've had is that almost everything had a white blanket of what I would assume is dead algae. So if everything looked white, then I couldn't find anything worth taking home. My question is, is the dead algae a geographical issue? (west of Billings) Or is it a time of year issue?

Yes the dreaded white film can make hunting a headache for sure, it is a mixture of dead algal build up and silt from the muddy waters during runoff, and unfortunately that layer persists pretty much year round and can be found all along the river. Going out right after rain is always good because the rocks are a bit cleaner and there is generally always clean gravel beds to search among the bars, but the closer you move toward the water the more of the silt coated rocks you encounter. We always go hunting with spray bottles for that very reason because the silt is unfortunately unavoidable in most spots on the river. It is definitely frustrating and takes more time to flip rocks to look at the clean undersides but some of the nicest and biggest agates on the yellowstone are found hunting that silt layer so the extra effort is rewarded with the nice ones

The green Jasper could be a great lizard or turtle, or small family of lizards and turtles :) also like the limb cast...is there a way to carve a lizard laying along the limb cast? Thanks for sharing the hunt and the closeups in good light

Oh nice! Id say Huntley is pretty much exactly the point where the hunting gets REAL good😁 anything downstream from there is usually really good, and yes there is! The gem and mineral show! I believe it is april 29th or 30th if im remembering correctly, at the shrine in billings😄 id definitely recommend checking it out! There is always some amazing stuff over there!

That is at least a $300 dollar Agate/Chalcedony you have there. Definitely something special, I wish I had buckets of those. I say $300 because of the fact that it is from Montana. Normally a piece that size of the same colors is maybe $30-$50 dollars, but that is very rare for where it came from. You could make a gold/silver necklace and get maybe 5 flawless cabochons out of that and give it to Alexis as a gift.

Honestly the beauty of the yellowstone is that anywhere downstream of billings is prime hunting😄 literally hundreds of miles of bank to search and amazing gems to be found pretty much anywhere you stop to look!

Yeah most of the time when you find/have such a beautiful stone, you should just leave it as it is, and trust me I know how hard it is not to mess with beautiful stones and just leave them alone

Wow such awesome finds. I too love banded chert. Here I find gray/black and brown/ tan. I have 1 that is black/gray that looks like glass. It is my favorite piece. I wish I could find green jasper. So beautiful. I hope I am able to get out this year and do some rockhounding. Couldn't do much last year do to physical health issues. Not gonna let it hold me back this year. Just loved every bit of this video. That purple agate is so spectacular. Purple is my favorite color too. Thanks for sharing.

Great question! Definitely chalcedony😄we have found some river tumbled amethyst and quartz crystals before but they always have quite a frosted texture, theyre never as glossy as the agates and chalcedony are

Really amazing stuff. I have only been in MT for coming on 3 yrs now and really appreciate your videos as well as as your Mom's. I share them with my family and friends. I have been fortunate to find some agagtized wood and a beautiful MT Crazy Lce Agate Heart Rock that has pockets of Goeodic Crystal's, Nodules, and really nice Banding throughout. The most spectacular attribute is it's "Crown " of Crystal calcite. I would be happy to send pictures if you like as I am seeking advice on what to do with it. Thank you. Respectfully, Jason C. QUESTIONS: 1. Will you be doing any garnet, sapphire, or jade hunting even on your regular hunts along the Yellowstone? I ask because I've found unexpected gems (may have found jet, definitely jade with chatoyancy, carnelian, etc.) all in Yakima county. The Montana sapphires are so exciting along with star garnet I've seen carved into spheres on TikTok and seeing some potential cobbles of jade on your journeys I'm silently hoping that you'll just announce you're going to be looking. 2. What are the requirements to be invited to the Makers Challenge? So many videos posted on RU-vid, ability, amount of followers?

I just found a whole bunch of very similar rocks on a hillside close to the Columbia River just outside of the Dalles Oregon. It's fascinating knowing they came from Montana.

Hi Theo,,, I love watching your videos and hope to rockhound in Montana soon. We have a small cabin in Alder but live in SoCal so we don’t get to visit as often as we would like 😊. Maybe you could test the purple stone because it sure looks like tumbled Amethyst, it may have even fallen out of someone’s pocket 🤣.

This is the kind of place where I would bring a folding chair, sit down and really look at the rocks surrounding me. Beats wandering aimlessly and I tend to find a lot I really would have missed. Plus my knees are shot. Getting new ones this spring.
