It show how well that artist did his/her job. I would also time it with zoom in and out so that it would leave the impression that your monitor is cycling through display resolutions. And I would end that video with screenshot of text mode where X11 server is complaining that it can't start up due to configuration error or maybe randomly choose to end it with screenshot of BSOD if date is 1st april.

I have distro hopped for many years, and have enjoyed many Debian based GNU/Linux operating systems for my home desktop. I had a revelation, and decided to use a community based only distribution. So, I installed the real deal. Debian 12 is now on my desktop. I do not believe I will ever feel the need to "hop" again.

for those who want to know the difference between Parrot Home and Parrot Security editions: Parrot Home Edition and Parrot Security Edition are identical, and the only difference between them is the set of software that comes pre-installed. Parrot OS Home Edition comes with no security tools, while Parrot OS Security Edition comes with all the hacking and pentest tools pre-installed.

I strongly disagree with merging Mate's two panels into one. I absolutely hate when distros do that and have a single crappy application menu. And I say crappy, because the ones usually used in Mate and Xfce to serve this purpose suck. Unfortunately, half of the Xfce and Mate implementations I come across are screwed up in this way, trying to make them more Windows-like. It's nice to come across one that hasn't been butchered. I personally prefer that a distro makes minimal changes to the desktop environment aside from maybe the desktop background and the little icon for the Kicker/"Start" menu, and present the desktop as its developers intended. From there you're free to consolidate the panels and tweak your own desktop however you want.
@palinurosec9154
@palinurosec9154 Месяц назад
in the future we would like to migrate to kde, because unfortunately there aren't many mature desktop environments still under active development mate and xfce are old, dead and have always lacked a vision, but have been a good lightweight alternative to the gnome madness so far
@fredmckinney8933
@fredmckinney8933 Месяц назад
I prefer having a single panel at the bottom. Besides, that, at least in theory, helps make those leaving Windows for Linux feel more at home. And that's how I do it on Xfce on my desktop box and in Openbox on my laptop. And that, in fact is how I've done it in a family-friendly web-filtered distro I've created called F3OS (the Free Family-Friendly Operating System). But you are, of course, free to rearrange it to your personal tastes -- there's no need for you to be hateful toward those of us who prefer a single panel.

I am a recent windows refugee. I have been running Debian 12.6 on my HP probook for a little over a week now. Learning Linux has a learning curve for sure but I'm taking it day by day. Once I'm comfortable in the deep end of the pool, I may try another distro just because. A rolling release distro based on Debian sounds interesting for another time. For now, I will forgo the trip down the rabbit hole until I learn a little more.

Calamares is OK, though I wish more distros gave options in the install for a variety of desktops/windows managers. Arch distros like ArcoLinux do this well, but some of the apps I'd like to use don't always work as well as I'd like. For some reason, Fedora distros have been the better distros for the type of apps I use. Debian distros are a close second, but Xorg displays are showing their age/limitations. Plasma is hit and miss, with Wayland being the best and most optimal for my laptop, especially with Hyprland.
@palinurosec9154
@palinurosec9154 Месяц назад
the installer installs whatever is shipped with the iso file, i think the netinstallers are what you are interested in. they install a base system for you and then allow you to choose what to add on top of it
@JohnCrawford1979
@JohnCrawford1979 Месяц назад
@@palinurosec9154 - True, but it also depends on what the distro gives for choices. Not sure if Fedora still has it, but they did have Hyprland in their repository, making it relatively easy to add on after installation. It's not as optimal as having the option during install, but at least it's an option. Either that, or have a choice of ISOs pre-built with the desktop/window managers to choose from. But, I get it. Some distros prefer to only develop on their flagship, with setting they prefer, or consider most optimal to them. Plus, there are lots of distros to choose from that at least one might work out for you. Or, you can build your own.That's what makes Linux great, having the options and freedom to find out what works best for you.

The one up over kali is it has a gui package manager out of the box.

the top one is the old gnome menu that supports nested hierarchical submenus which is important for the pentesting nature of the distro, but it doesn't support searching the bottom one is a messy attempt by the mate project to provide a more modern menu, it supports search, favorites etc, but it doesn't support nested application categories unfortunately the best parrot can do is to take what the open source world has developed so far and put it together for the users, that's why a future switch to kde has always been a hot topic among the project devs

I thought I saw that it’s based upon Debian Stable. But if this is based on Debian Testing as Derek said at the end of the video, then I’m not too sure what to think. what's the point of reviews for all these distributions? they're no different at all the title of those videos must be “yet another wallpaper review of x distro”

But ubuntu and fedora has newer packages. That's a BIG difference. Having same kernel, init, desktop environment and softwares doesn't matter.

@@rishirajsaikia1323 that's why a lot of software gets backported by the team instead of waiting for a new debian release

Relative newbie here. Parrot is my daily driver. Because it's a rolling release, I'm working toward a cohesive btrfs snapshot strategy for my /[root] partition - as well as an rsnapshot strategy (using NFS and external drives) for my /home partition. Any videos planned for rnapshot? It's pretty slick.

parrot is not rolling release, it just gets many backport updates to not let the most important programs age

snapshots are not backups, and viceversa, but both are useful for your disaster recovery plan i suggest you to install timeshift and setup automatic snapshotting at every system reboot, and automatically delete old snapshots (keep the past 2 or 3 snapshots only) and then have a remote server where to periodically push your stuff i don't personally like NFS, and what i do instead is to simply leave ssh open and use rsync over ssh to push my changes to a remote server (with its own shapshots enabled). i also use rclone to do encrypted backups on some s3 buckets, and such tools can also be used to incrementally sync stuff things offline to a phisically attached backup drive

@@palinurosec9154 My mistake about the rolling release. Understood now.

@@palinurosec9154 btrfs snapshots are not backups. But, rsnapshot backups are rsync based, and are true backups. I will look at timeshift. Thank you. I'm playing with SSH now. Will probably flesh that out vs. NFS.
