@Penumbra Aiming stakes aren't moved between shots. They're a reference point for "straight ahead" when looking through the sight unit. When changing directions, you rotate the sight, which can move 360 degrees in a circle. Then you have to adjust the mortar until the sight is again pointed at the stakes. For instance, if you rotate the sight 90 degrees, once you reorient the gun so the sight is now pointed at the stakes again, the gun will be pointing 90 degrees from the initial "straight ahead" position.

the gunner is looking through the sight at aiming stakes that have been put of when the squad laid the mortar for fire. By this I mean that when the platoon sets up, usually the number 2 gun is set up first on a principal direction of fie. Once that mortar is set up, the sight on the mortar is usually aligned with the left hand edge of the front and rear aiming stakes. When corrections are made, the are made off the original setting and the gunner attempts to alight his sight between the front and rear aiming stakes. All mortar tubes set up and put out aiming stakes. the mortar are moved from the corrections made in plotting and receiving corrections from whomever is calling in the fire mission. the idle mortar tubes get a final deflection a charge and elevation just like the base gun.

There are red and white striped aiming stakes laid at an azimuth with a compass; for a normal site, you lay the gun with the sight set at 3200 mils, aligned with those stakes you laid prior. More accurate laying can be achieved with another piece of equipment; I forget what it's called, honestly. Anyway, there is a 6400 mil dial for the deflection on the sight, and from 800 to 1511 mils for elevation. Technically, the gun isn't really designed to be used at that elevation, that's just the maximum elevation setting you can put in. For reference, 1600 mils would be straight up in the air, and 800 is a 45° shot. The Fire Direction Center (FDC) gives "data" for you to put into the site, and your goal is to achieve alignment with the stakes and to have a level gun. You put up two stakes in alignment at 3200 mils, and when your deflection gets further out from the median, you actually aim with what we call the NFL (near far line) method, because the stakes will jot be perfectly aligned anymore. Short answer: you see red and white metal stakes.

If you can see them land. You're probably doing something wrong. Because snipers can hit you.

When it fires the first round it embeds itself itself into the ground. It's extremely rare it moves with the exception of the baseplate sometimes incrementally slides back but a sandbag takes care of that.

Uhhhh, you can stand in front of the cannon and grab the bipod if you want, not me. As a gunner I kept my eye on the sight and arms wrapped around the gun to adjust the deflection and elevation and they thought I was crazy doing that but we were able to hit targets faster and more accurately. They were probably on the live fire range and I wouldn't want to throw up a net for no reason. I will agree with the ammo, but it was closer than you think. We kept most a good distance but left a few crates close.

The first few rounds are just meant to get the mortar seated.

Basically you are trying to make your reticle. Aligned with the two poles that are laid out at front.

Can fire mortars direct line of sight. It requires adjusting sight to impact of round after each shot.

I would have an answer, if the video showed me how to aim and fire an 81mm mortar. Unfortunately it didn't, so I do not.

you know how the astronauts put mirrors on the moon so that we can use lasers to calculate shit? The red dot is pointed at the moon and then is reflected onto the target as is the scope field of view. Hope this helps

@David Pryor Wrong. 81mm is standard nearly worldwide for mortars post-WW2. It's just an ideal size for the explosive charge and distance required to fire.

@David Pryor its a metal tube with a spike in the bottom. you could literally just make your own ammo for that size of tube

Probably to make absolutely sure they won't get in the way of the shell. Imagine if one of the mortarmen leaves his head inside the trajectory of the shell, and then it hits his helmet on the way up...
