A Quiet Place: Day One
WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Sam is a terminally ill cancer patient who is staying in a hospice in New York with her service cat, Frodo. Reuben, who works at the hospice, convinces Sam to join a group outing to Manhattan, which Sam only agrees to when he promises that they will get pizza. During the outing, meteor-like objects crash into the city, following which hostile extraterrestrial creatures begin attacking people.
Sam is knocked unconscious and wakes inside a theater with Frodo and other survivors. Everyone is quiet, and she is signaled by fellow survivor Henri to not make any sound. Announcements from overhead helicopters warn civilians to stay silent and hidden until rescues can be made. The military bombs the bridges to prevent the creatures from leaving the island, which makes one of the survivors panic. Henri tries to keep him quiet and accidentally kills him.
After Reuben is killed by a creature, Sam takes Frodo and leaves for Harlem, intending to get her pizza. The military announces that boats are preparing to evacuate people from the south side of the city. People start leaving buildings towards the evacuation point, and the sheer volume of people moving together alert the creatures, who attack and cause a stampede. Sam flees in the opposite direction and is separated from Frodo.
Eric, an English law student, surfaces from a flooded subway entrance. He encounters Frodo, and follows him back to Sam. Sam attempts to convince Eric to go to the evacuation point, but Eric is shell-shocked and follows Sam to her apartment, where she hopes to find medication for her pain. Eric asks to join Sam on her search for pizza, and the pair travel together, narrowly avoiding the creatures as they make their way to Harlem. Along the way, Eric gets Sam's medication for her from a pharmacy, and Sam tells Eric that as a child she used to watch her late father play jazz at a club and afterward they would get pizza together at Patsy's.
The pair arrive at Patsy's, but it has been destroyed. They travel to the club where Sam's father played instead, and Eric gets pizza from another shop and writes "Patsy's" on the box to cheer Sam up. They share the pizza, and Eric mimes a card trick to entertain Sam.
The pair become aware of two boats nearby, filled with passengers readying to escape. They leave the club together, but when creatures start to congregate nearby, Sam gives Frodo to Eric and runs off to distract the creatures by smashing car windows. Eric, carrying Frodo, jumps into the water and is pulled up into one of the boats by Henri. Eric finds a note in his jacket from Sam, telling him to take care of Frodo and thanking him for reminding her to live.
Some time later, Sam walks into an empty street on a broad daylight, listening to Feeling Good by Nina Simone via earbuds attached to a radio. Standing in the middle of the street, she takes the earphone jack out of the radio and smilingly waits for a creature to arrive, which suddenly appears behind her in the final shot.
