To me it felt very very much like the middle film of a trilogy. What shocked me in the first film apart from the novelty of world that was created was how they sacrificed characters to keep the audience on their toes. Their young son dying immediately in the first film, the father dying, the unadulterated horror of trying to give birth alone, in agonising pain and vulnerable AND trying to do this in silence. Wow. Sadly that's all gone in this one. There is none of the high-octane tension that was present before. To me it felt a bit too much of a plot machine, nothing too crazy happening but entertainingly bringing us nicely and neatly to the lively denouement of what most likely will be QPIII. Still fun and entertaining, but lacking the bravery and character the first one had, imo.

I agree with you in some respects. I felt that it was a well crafted film with some great acting and set pieces but there was nothing new. I get that if it’s not broke don’t fix but the first one was so unique that I kind of wanted some more originality that made the first one so good. It did feel like the middle of a trilogy and I can see them doing one more to wrap it up so hopefully it can end on a high. Also they kind of forgot about what the ending of the first one set up… there was no resolution to that end scene if you know what I mean

I thought it was as good as it could possibly be, especially when you consider that the first film really did not need a sequel. The very idea of sequel to A Quiet Place seemed to me stretching the idea too far. The original film was, for all its brilliance, a one gimmick film, a bit like Hitchcock's Rope or Groundhog Day. What is miraculous about the sequel is that it does not seem tired, or overstay its welcome, and delivers all the thrills you'd expect, despite basically taking the same idea and stretching it out even further. I'm left with the odd feeling that it was a film that didn't need to be made, and yet was brilliantly done.

I think the first film is better not just because the novelty but also it brings more interesting situations of danger to the table (i.e. labor). A lot of Part2's scenarios are tropes that have been done in previous post-apocalyptic or monster titles like The Last of Us. Of course, the execution of these tropes keeps the film good, even if a bit unnecessary plot-wise. I think once a trilogy is established, this particular movie will just be considered the "bridge" to more significant happenings later on (especially because of how it cuts off at the end).

The third movie was always a given after part deux... The final showdown with the beasties needs to be creative, knowing that we do, about their Kryptonite...probably open up with an 'Apocalypse Now' helicopter scene - blurting out some feedback, followed by a convoy of vehicles taking out the stunned monsters...either way - lookin' forward to the conclusion.

I think Mark simply likes Emily Blunt and John Krasinski too much to give this movie a bad critique. :) Joking aside, while by no means I think that it was a bad movie, it definitely didn't bring anything new to the story. It actually set the whole story one step back compared to the previous movie. While the previous movie ended on an empowering note for our characters by figuring out how to fight these creatures, this movie starts with them facing almost the same level of treat as in the first movie. And as long as we are talking about interesting characters and shifting perspective, imo, the movie would be immensely more interesting if the whole story was told from the perspective of Cillian Murphy's character - dealing with the loss of family, the effect of isolation, etc.
@yezen6889
@yezen6889 3 года назад
I respectfully disagree. I found this sequel to have a much more interesting and emotionally engaging story compared to the predictable nature of its predecessor, and i think this has to do with this film’s dual narrative structure. Obviously, there are many inconsistencies regarding the plot (which is also a remarkable issue with the first one), but this one compensates with world building. The two child actors are not good imo, but that in no way hinders this sequel’s ability to expand its story.

I had concerns when the studio announced that a sequel was going ahead just for the fact that this sort of plot in a horror film has never been done before, and its a testament to the directing and writing of Krasinki that he made a great horror film. I enjoyed the sequel, but it doesn't do much to justify why it was made. The end is too similar. Some of the tension was brilliant, but I just wish it would've innovated a bit more. It was played very safe (even Djimon Hounsou was wasted). Hopefully, the third film will expand into something new.

I saw it in a small Spanish cinema, I could hear the screen next door, people talking, someone arrived 30min late to the film and took another 10 minutes to get settled. That may have tainted my opinion on this film, but I am afraid to say I didn't love part 2. I thoroughly enjoyed the first film, the connection of family was much stronger and I felt there was more on the line. Part 2 didn't do too much to develop the characters for me. Maybe I need to give it another watch without so much distraction.

TLoU 2 is far from perfect. The 1st half of the game barely works, because you can't tell that story with a straight face using typical AAA gameplay formula where you have to kill dozens of people. It becomes ridiculous way too fast, way too much violence to get the point across, because it's a videogame. The 2nd half of the game tell a different story, which fits the gameplay quite nicely, so it didn't have the same issue and was really good.
@johnd8726
@johnd8726 Год назад
@@KenTWOu TBF it's a story about a person desensitized to violence by their father figure and focused on revenge. It matches the narrative of violence setup by the first game (e.g. Joel as displayed in dialogue in the first game used to be a Hunter, aka a marauder who killed innocents on sight for gains) and he killed people as an act of revenge to get a Ellie, who consented on giving her life for a cure, back into his own arms, for his own reasons. She steps into his bloodied footprints and only cares about one thing
@KenTWOu
@KenTWOu Год назад
@@johnd8726 You're talking about story the game was trying to tell. You're ignoring the way its story was told. TLoU2 told its story in a most obnoxious AAA cinematic way. For example, look at TLoU1, it kind of worked, because you the player carried on your hands your daughter, before she was killed at the beginning. It kind of worked, because you the player killed a doctor who wanted to dissect your daughter figure Ellie at the end. And now look at TLoU2. The 1st half doesn't work, because Ellie killed almost all story important characters in cut-scenes, not you! Meanwhile dozens and dozens people you killed during gameplay don't matter, don't affect anything, don't affect game's violence related message. The 2nd half with its brutal redemption arc doesn't work, because you the player didn't kill Joel, Abby did it in a cut-scene, not you! It's hard to relate to things in a video game that don't concern you, because you didn't do those things. The point is TLoU2 was written like it's a movie or, considering its length, a TV show, it should've been written as a video game, giving you the player agency to affect or at least to participate in its major story beats. They should put the player in the story, not tell a story around him using cut-scenes - filmmaking techniques. But it's a Naughty Dog game, and they always poked fun at the concept of ludo-narrative dissonance. That's exactly why TLoU2 turned out like that, dissonant and didn't work for all people who played it.

A Quite dull pace. The producers must be laughing all the way to the bank due to current circumstances ie: nothing else to see in theatres. To be honest, I thought the flashback intro was good. As soon as we were back to the end of the previous film though, I thought it was just dull. Apart from C Murphy being shoehorned(see intro) into the film the only thing we learned was that these intergalactic travellers couldn’t swim. Really? At one point, when they decided to get a boat, the film turned into John Carpenters “The Fog” or something similar, were they supposed to be cannibals? Holy moly. Also No 1 The aliens seemed to manage ok in the harbours waters? Also no 2 Why didn’t the cannibals think of getting into one of the multitude of boats and get on the island, just to see what it was like? It wasn’t far, they’d been there for over 400 days and were so desperate they’d resorted to cannibalism! If that wasn’t bad enough only a couple of miles away on the island people were living like it was 1950s Americana - Beach huts, BBQs. children playing. Why didn’t the script just throw in them having a Rock festival and be done with it? In the unmanned radio station, who was constantly putting the needle on the record? Why was it a record and not digital? That record can only be 4 minutes long. Was it an auto changing record player? Another thing (sorry) are we supposed to believe that the Alien creature was asleep on the boat and it just woke up in time for our heroes to get aquatinted with the islanders? Silly

Just back from seeing it in a half empty cinema, never felt so self concious trying to get minstrels out of a bag in my life before! Oh, and it's a good film.

Great review from the good doctor. I don’t think it’s quite as good as the (5*) original… but it’s a damn good shot. There was noticeably less ‘quiet’ in this one, which I missed. After removing the ‘quiet birth’ threat, the next best angle is Reagan’s deafness. And I agree with Mark that Millicent Simmonds gave a fabulous performance. The first movie was novel and exciting enough to ignore the plot holes and it honestly was a great movie but i think the novelty with the second movie is no longer there, so the plot holes were very difficult to ignore.

I enjoyed the movie up until the reveal of the Aliens new weakness that just threw me out of the while movie there would still be Submarines or Navy Vessels who would have figured that out surely

Agreed. Stupid film. People are just pleased to be back in Theatres. My god the producers have got lucky with their timing.

@@jim586 I wholly admit I made a spelling mistake in my original post I meant to say "whole" but yeah my feelings stay the same it was a really good and intense movie until that second weakness reveal just totally took me out of the whole thing no doubt the 3rd movie will try and explain it all away......

@@jim586 The way the could realistically spin it in my mind is if the Aliens did a Pearl Harbour on a massive scale and wiped out the whole continental America and some of them landed elsewhere but no one else had the capability to contact America at this point who were clued up on morse code or vinyl tracks to decipher a way to beat them although according to the first movie they were working it out

Nasty aliens dare to invade the USA. Guess what? No awesome military hardware waiting to greet them. Ordinarily the whole American Army, Navy & Airforce would be out in full force making lot's of noise with gunfire and big bangs. I don't get it.

The silence was better than the first imo, and this sequel to me felt like a middle of the season filler episode of fear the walking dead. Nothing happened in this film other than continuel survival. Again, watch fear, or the walking dead, and those give way more on their good days, than this has in either film.

I didn't hate it, but I thought it was boring and unbelievable. Just didn't like it. A species that ONLY gets by detecting sound seems to conveniently not hear or feel a lot of vibrations.

Got to be one of the worst films I've ever seen. Completely lost the cinema I was in, you could tell everyone was bored out of their minds. Cheesy American filmmaking

Enjoyable enough but a monster movie for people who haven’t played The Last Of Us. It’s a complete rip off of that series with some Tremors-meets-Aliens creepies.
