Honestly, the biggest problem I had with this movie is that the concept of the monsters makes absolutely no sense as portrayed. They are completely blind, hunt entirely by sound, and also clearly lack any form of sound-sense to serve an equivalent function as eyes, such as bat's echolocation or a whale's sonar, and yet again and again and again they are shown to be effortlessly running through forests, navigating houses, etc. without any difficulty whatsoever? How? They can't see! They have no way of knowing if they are about to run headlong into something or trip. Far from being these unstoppable killing machines, in actuality these aliens should have been pretty much completely harmless.

@plugshirt1684
@plugshirt1684 4 года назад
Kickiusz it’s alright you make a good point but sadly the only answer I can really come up with is probably it just wasn’t thought of too much or maybe they have echolocation. A lot of the stuff in this movie you kind of just have to guess for yourself how you think it works the movie has quite a few plot holes but who knows maybe they just have some weird unknown abilities by being aliens or it just wasn’t thought that well through. Overall this movie is a great concept but they definitely could have made it better.

Actually, constant loud sound(s) can be very negative to people's well-being. At my previous work I've had to work in a room with a server. And, of course, the server had powerful fans. I've got used to the sound pretty quickly. But when I sometimes was leaving the work late, when nobody was around and everything was very quiet, my head was ringing as if somebody inside was beating on huge bells. And then I realized how negative the constant sound (not even that loud) was for me.

Death by drowning in grain is more common than you would think. I live in a farming region, and we've lost some kids to it. By going horizontal on the grain, it makes it harder for you to sink in one specific place. It's like how they recommend to slide yourself back onto ice if you fall into a frozen lake instead of getting back on your feet. Also, the girl finds out that her ear device is their weakness in the same scene--the monster gets too close and the device goes off. Lastly, it wasnt the radio hooked up to the system--it was simply just a general speaker system which she held her ear device up to.

Thank god someone else has some common sense. My first question a few minutes in was "can you drown out the noise you make with natural noise? Why not live by the ocean or something?" And then they ACTUALLY explain that YES you CAN do that and you're free to scream at the top of your lungs as long as you're near loud natural noise. So WHY in the world are the main characters not exploiting that? They know that they can! Never before has a solution to the problem the characters are facing been more blatant than in this movie. If the monsters track you by sound, the last place you want to be is a quiet place. You want to be in the noisiest place possible. However, as for the guns thing, I think the movie made it pretty clear that the monsters' exoskeleton was impenetrable to bullets. On the wall by the whiteboard there are several articles and headlines saying that the monsters are invincible. And so what I think the movie meant to imply was that hitting the monster with a barrage of high pitched sound would disorient them and also reveal their video game weak point. Then you could attack the weak point for massive damage. I still don't buy that the monsters managed to destroy society before someone figured that out, but the suspension of disbelief for that is MUCH less than the disbelief that the characters aren't using the river to their advantage more. I, like you, was totally distracted throughout the entire movie by that fact and it really did ruin the experience a bit. I did think Emily Blunt did a phenomenal job acting though. For example, her face when the little boy turned on the toy rocket ship really sold how grave of a mistake it was.

animals are pattern seeking. Sure you could buy some time like that but I imagine it wouldn't take too long for the creatures to distinguish between natural river sounds and unnatural human sounds. You could get away with dropping a single fish or yelling under the waterfall one day out of the blue, but I imagine that any consistent human action would be figured out. To me, there are bigger flaws in this movie than that one.

@bums009
@bums009 6 лет назад
G. Foggy. You are aware that most cases of people drowning in grain did so because the auger at the bottom of the bin was activated which would make a lot of noise? The only other way is if there is an air pocket right underneath where you stand or grain bridging which is when spoiled grain clumps together over an air pocket. Also even if any of these unlikely scenarios did happen the other kid would have never been able to help him out of there. Someone submerged waist deep in grain would need the equivalent of their own body weight plus 600lbs in order to free them so...

Hey my dude, nice video. With grain in a granary there can be a "bubble" of air or rotten / insect eaten grain. So grain can collapse and suffocate people. Sometimes the grain can be 100% solid and it would be kind of like walking in snow, u don't sink in. So if the "bubble collapsed" then the rest of the grain could potentially be stable. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grain_entrapment

I agree with almost all of what you said, except for one thing. The monsters have armor plating; the noise from the cochlear implant made them open up the plating on their heads and revealed their weak spots, allowing guns to become effective. One does have to wonder why that makes them open their plating to reveal their weak spots (presumably eardrums). Wouldn't they close up even tighter to protect themselves from the sound?
@themakerstoolbox9688
@themakerstoolbox9688 5 лет назад
I guess the armor plating opening is them covering their ears. If I can compare it to humans, if we cover our ears reflexively we have no defense mechanism for that moment because both our arms are in use. I don't know how well that translates to these monsters my point is more when a creature of any sort defends from one kind of annoyance or pain they usually leave something else unprotected
@Dinjur

The reason grain entrapment happens is because of voids (air pockets) that occur from basic physics and can crust over for some more structural integrity. Once they break. Watch out. You're covered in seconds. Once the pockets are filled, then obviously the flow would stop and there would be plenty of structural integrity. That part seems pretty real. The rest of the criticisms I get. There seems to be a real misunderstanding of how sound works in this movie. Like creaks from basement stairs can be heard by these monsters? @Zarkawi17 6 лет назад
I'm guessing he didn't complete miss the fact that the monster's armor came off, he just didn't feel like that was a good enough explanation for why we could not blow these things the hell up. They sit there and open up their faces when they're trying to listen, so i assume that counted as an opening in their armor too, why couldn't they be shot right through their face holes with a rifle from far away? They seem really easy to trick, after all. I didn't dislike this movie, but many of the points Adam brings up here are completely valid, and even though the presence of these plot holes didn't ruin my experience, that doesn't mean they don't exist, nor does it mean someone is wrong for pointing noticing them.

This could play out as a practically silent movie where the cinematographer could really go nuts on visual cues, colors, visual symbolism and so on to really have a unique modern silent film. Also, the music could have been used a lot better if they hadn't brought on Marco Beltrami (a composer whose only score I can remember one bit of was from the original Scream) and instead a composer who actually portrays complex moods in unique ways, even if it was Trent Reznor, Clint Mansell, or Jon Brion, the movie would benefit from a more talented composer. The film itself is fine, there were some tense moments but mostly it just strikes me as one big missed opportunity. Maybe the studio would have had a harder time selling something that wasn't so safe and by the numbers, or maybe Kraczinski being a new director either resulted in him not being allowed to be ambitious or being too afraid to be ambitious. Either way, I saw this movie twice (only because two different people I know wanted to see it) and I'm likely never gonna watch it again, it's pretty dull once the novelty wears thin.

You make a few good points, but some of these are stretching pretty far, or forget information that is given to the audience. The sound proof basement is established as something that they didn't know would work, and they built it in hopes that it would work when the baby arrived. I don't think that was a silo hatch waiting to open, I think it was an old silo that gave way to weight because it was old. The grain isn't acting like quicksand, it is acting like grain. They land feet first, and start to sink. When they are on the metal, it displaces all the weight and continues to do so when the monster lands on it. They are no longer at risk of "drowning" but of being crushed by the weight. The water in the basement scene shows the monster come down the stairs, and before she even begins walking through the water, they show the creature lower itself into the water. She wasn't walking slowly for no reason, she was afraid of stepping on a monster that could rip her in half. You missed a bunch of info up to this point that the movie gives the audience to set up future scenes, but this one is the worst because it is shown twice beforehand that the creatures are sensitive to her implant, and that builds to the end of the movie. The whole climax of the film made no sense to you, because you missed important information that the movie gives you? I understand some people stop paying as much attention to a film when they realize they don't like it, but these are your reasons for not liking the film, and most of them are solved by just watching the film. Playing a song would work, like you said, if you are cool with living in a house that is constantly blasting loud music. The waterfall is a place that allows loud noise when you are next to it, like, right next to it. So the recording of the waterfall would have to be loud enough to drown out sound in every room of their house. A very specific frequency hurts them, the feedback loop of that specific frequency played loudly right in front of them incapacitates them momentarily along with also removing the armor plates from its face. When the plates are removed, then they can be killed with guns. Even if guns just worked, with no extra steps, we have no idea how many of these things there are. If you kill one, good luck killing 12 at once. I normally just give you the benefit of a doubt when you miss important info that makes your issue go away, but this has started happening a lot.
@ThomasThorr
@ThomasThorr 6 лет назад
on you point about the grain - you don't simply "sink" into grain unless there's some sort of leak or hole at the bottom of the silo (or the auger which pulls grain from the silo is activated), in which case it would form a 'sinkhole' at the top of grain over that hole. not sure if that was happening in the movie since i haven't seen it.
@KookiesNolly
@KookiesNolly 6 лет назад
The thing about the kids’ weight when they were in the silo is pretty obvious to me. It also works with water. You float much more easily when you are lying on water than when you are standing all straight. The grains could be assimilated to a fluid in this situation m. I am baffled that anyone doesn’t understand that. I agree that he just really didn’t pay attention. But that’s pretty hilarious to me. Sometimes he makes those comments that are supposed to be scientific explanations to show that some scenes don’t make sense, and he ends up being soooo wrong. Like when he said that if it wasn’t for gravity people’s skin wouldn’t get saggy as they age. How stupid do you even have to be to say stuff like that? The fact that he didn’t even check that before uploading the video is even worse. I think he doesn’t understand stuff as much as he thinks he does which is dangerously arrogant because he is less likely to learn anything with that attitude.

first of all knowyourmeme.com/memes/grain-entrapment second grain only works like that if the augur is on, otherwise it behaves like a solid. quick sand is a non Newtonian fluid, for your purposes horrible comparison, it reacts inconsistantly to different pressures, a person standing on quick sand will at first apply a pressure of m*g ( mass * gravity, 1 pascal = Kg m/s^2 or mass* acceleration) and then as they sink their body parts join the reference of the quicksand meaning eventually the pressure to make quicksand flow can no longer be achieved and they stop sinking. Grain is not a fluid at all its better to compare it to a beach, have you ever seen anyone drown on a beach?
@thing674
@thing674 6 лет назад
That's false. My grandfather died in a grain silo, augur off. He fell from the top of the bin, into the grain and was engulfed by the corn. Suffocated. People knew he fell but couldn't get to him in time. In fact, the fire department had to cut the side of the silo. Perhaps you haven't accounted for actually FALLING into it. Or maybe you were not trying to say that if you fell into it it would behave this way, and you were simply stating that if you were standing on it to begin with, you will not sink into it. On another note, I have personally witnessed sinking into corn in a knee deep silo, starting from a standing state. If you don't move, you're good, however, moving frequently will cause you to sink. I will admit not quickly, but annoyingly if you are trying to get out.
@Peachewi
@Peachewi 6 лет назад
First of all know your meme is not exactly a great reference for a debate. Second the first line on said website it "Grain Entrapment refers to when a person gets submerged in grain when the pile of grain they were standing on, like quicksand." Third grain entrapment can also be caused by an empty space beneath the grain which causes the grain to practically collapse under the weight and consume whatever is above it within about twenty seconds. Also as I said before I don't know the exact context behind the scene so- just from what's shown in this video the augur could very much so be on, but even if it wasn't you could still very easily be engulfed. Also yeah people have drowned at the beach and its not the same at all?

it would be clever for them to hide underwater when the creatures are near. Terrestrial animals cannot identify the direction of sound underwater. An ocean/river front property would work fine and would already be in place. They needed to establish a range of this hearing also. If a creature could hear 10s of thousands of miles away then it Could differentiate a yell from All the waterfalls and rivers between the target and the Creature.

The waterfall would be a water source. You can shit in a river and it would wash downstream. Food can be brought with them or they can eat fish or they can use the truck to transport the grain from the silo which would last a decent amount of time. Tent or natural shelter would work wonders if you need to survive hell if they had done that, within 30 days they'd have a fairly decent shelter, just look up bushcraft videos on RU-vid and you can see some examples. If your home is irradiated you wouldn't stay there, you'd go somewhere else, do the same with sound monsters

They needed to show that. At some point, the movie needed to explain how these rather mindless animals that simply skitter toward sound like a moth to a flame managed to take over the world without being blown up or electrocuted by sonic-trap versions of bug zappers and contact explosives. We actually see with the truck that they can't just rip apart even thin metal like tissue paper... so how'd they get through the thick armor of tanks? We're never told or shown enough to explain how they got into this state of affairs. The scope is far broader than it should have been. A set-up with one family encountering these mysterious, unknown creatures in a remote cabin would have taken care of all the issues.

With movies like these you need enough of a sense of disbelief to think that a) the armor can't be pierced by human methods, even nuclear, due to some unknown mechanism of the alien organism, which is entirely possible, and b) It's more likely that the high frequency causes some kind of disruption in the cells of the entire organism, including the soft-looking bits, which still might not be easily penetrated by bullets if you just fired at them normally.

Grain isn't quicksand. If you fall in you WILL DROWN. There are tons of regulations about silos and grain storage facilities because around 20 people a year, mostly children or untrained workers, fall in and drown. And weight distribution is bullshit. Grain functions like a vacuum, it WILL suck you down no matter how spread out you try to be. Realistically the grain should have actually pulled them both in when she was trying to rescue her brother as grain exerts a force of 400lbs which obviously a small girl should be overwhelmed by as she is certainly not 400lbs.

Regarding the silo “quick sand:” yes, that’s a real danger and that can really happen if you fall in. Like any large pile of tiny things, there’s enough room and air underneath the grains for them to give way under you and swallow you up if there is enough concentrated weight. My family has owned a farm for several generations, and I’m very aware of how dangerous it can be if you aren’t careful. Google it and you can find articles addressing this as well, and how often it still happens. Also, like someone else answered, it’s like how snowshoes keep you from falling into thick, high drifts of snow. The door displaces the concentrated weight so that there is not enough weight per square area to make the grain underneath it move. ***themoreyouknooooow

You live on a farm so you already know this. But there are tons of regulations about silos and grain storage facilities because around 20 people a year, mostly children or untrained workers, fall in through air gaps and drown. And weight distribution is bullshit. Grain functions like a vacuum, it WILL suck you down no matter how spread out you try to be. That door will push them faster not stop them from sinking. Think of using water boards (like snow shoes but for water) on a different surface, a pool of olive oil or milk for example. You will no longer be able to float on either of those because their density in completely different to water. Realistically the grain should have actually pulled them both in when she was trying to rescue her brother as grain exerts a force of 400lbs per square inch which obviously a small girl should be overwhelmed by as she is certainly not even close to weighing 400lbs.

I get that you can sink if there are air gaps but the movie treats it as if it’s water. When you go to the beach you don’t drown by standing on the sand... and snow is a whole different thing it’s ice crystals, not completely a solid. That’s like saying Scrooge McDuck’s pool of coins would work in the real human world as it does in the cartoon. Ridiculous.

Daniel Bak that was kind of the point not that it came out of nowhere but the fact that she had seen ot react to her loud ass hearing aid noise the same time she is. Youd think she'd notice that the noise hurting her is also hurting it. It annoyed me that he never wanted her to go downstairs for some reason. Like why? Maybe because of the oh fuck feedback loop? I don’t think it was any frequency that weakened them. Just that highly specific one. Although the military not figuring out how to use sound is weird, maybe the family was just stuck in the quarantine zone. In my head they just wanted to have sex again since they hadn't had it since at least before it all happened. Maybe they were really quite or they went to the waterfall. And getting pregnant isn't hard. So maybe that one time was all that was needed. It happens a lot of the time. Also saying it here coz I'm typing this as he said it. They didn't move to the river coz they already had a whole farm with everything they need. Ok I'm typing this with the video playing and every time he makes a point I just what to type it here coz I'm already typing lol.

He did the same thing in his Edge of Tomorrow review. I do not know whether he is too lazy to rewatch the movies and find anwsers or does this on purpose knowing that a number of people look to his reviews for guidance as to what movie the might watch and thus do not have the info themselves.
@wondersuave
@wondersuave 6 лет назад
Meik Vincenco I think he gets mad whenever people tell him he can't dislike a movie and he ended picking apart what he could without watching again. Or maybe he gets too distracted by his thoughts. I mean he got confused when the monster came out of the water, even though you see it submerge itself just 20 seconds earlier. He was probably still wondering why they weren't using that room in the beginning. I don't think the movie is brilliant. It works more as a thriller than horror, and it relys on the convenience of the baby coming sooner than expected, which isn't too unreasonable. I watched twice, and I still don't understand why they got in the truck at the end, or what Jim was planning on doing with the axe. I think there are lots of problems when you ask more and more questions, but I think john Krasinski was focusing more on making a movie about family rather than building this world he created, which I think is the major problem with this film.
