Hi, old painters trick. Tuck a paper towel into the grove of the paint can to keep the grove clean when you're pouring paint out of the can. Pull it out when you're ready to put the lid back on the can

Wow, that stick-it-to-me coating really transformed the cockpit look. It was nice to see you all enjoying it for a snack or meal, whatever it was. It was cool to watch the fiberglass get installed around and over the hinges. Hopefully that will make it easier for the water to flow towards the drain holes much easier than it was before adding the transitional layers.

So satisfying to see the paint go on (or primer…) great job it’s coming together nicely. Also, Happy Birthday Janni! 🎉

Thank you for supporting Tony. He has worked only with some family help. His wife passed just before he was finishing. Having little funds he had to build more parts of his boat then most. A gentle soul.

I think a lot of people probably underestimate the keenest eye for detail in the design you have exercised. The attention to detail in designing the gutters - sized perfectly for the paint roller was just genius.😉

When we painted the deck on the Donovan 30, we made the storage shed a big paint booth and set a plank for the spray painter above it, athwartship, and slowly pulled the boat forward on its trailer so the primed areas weren't contaminated. Worked great. We used Awlgrip matterhorn white with te Awlgrip grit, 50% fine 50% medium, but at twice the recommended per quart. That gives a very grippy surface that is also gentle on your knees, knucles, and clothes. I recommend doing a test surface to determine how much to use.

If you pour your mixed epoxy onto a large diameter shallow metal tray you will add to the laminating time. The added surface area decreases the rate of exotherm - it helps in warmer weather.

Been watching ya for a bit. Nice job. I restored a 1963 mark twain inboard. 97th spray mould boat ever made, transom, deck, tanks, seats, trim tabs iron duke, outdrive, glass and gel coat, and a Bimini top I had to sell it for 750 bucks,

Painting the hinges is a land lord special. Must have felt awesome.

It's really coming together now, good to finally see paint going on..the sharp corners in the cockpit are a little concerning, those could cause some serious damages if someone falls when out on the high seas..

You mentioned the instrument panel. If I might make a suggestion. I've been sailing for 60 years, and like most people, I have mounted the autopilot head somewhere 'convenient' in the cockpit. The problem is that wherever it is mounted, it's not always convenient. Sitting in the shade, the head is always somewhere else, ie, in the sun, in the rain or whatever. For the last 10 years or so I have mounted a head in a small cedar box with silicone buttons on the bottom, and used the enclosed wire to make a 'poor man's remote'. You can park it out of the sun, which they hate, take it to the stern quarter, or forward in the shade of the main. I tie a knot in the wire inside the box as a stress relief against pulling on it, glue it watertight, paint it, et voila', a portable remote. very convenient. Yes there's a wire, but so much more convenient

You asked a while back about paint color for the hull. White is obviously the most common, but I've always found that my head turns when I see a deep Navy blue hull.

Amazing how a coat of paint can make a piece quilt look like one unified thing, and what beautiful thing it has become! I cannot imagine the thrill of seeing this cockpit painted, also because you guys will spend so many amazing hours, days, months, years enjoying the world from that very spot. For me it's like magic the second the painting starts - all the prep work pays off when you look back on a job well done. Functionality-wise, you can tell that the cockpit has been designed by a sailor. Mainsheet on the deck house, very safe and out of the way. Only thing to worry about is running backstays flapping about, if you have them that is. Would guess so, probably multiple forestays as that allows to tap into the performance DNA of the boat. Should be a ridiculously awesome boat to sail. The angular architecture of the volumes in the cockpit looks right and is in keeping with the 80's provenance. With those big winches on top of the coaming she will look very powerful.

I'm more in awe at the undertaking this week, after putting it into perspective by doing my own pre-launch list. Even sourcing some replacements and upgrades to hardware. Good to see some paint going on.

I find the thump of the epoxy pump strangely hypnotic! 😀 Also love the videos, my brother and I have had to do a few little repairs on our boat - leaking stanchions, installing grab handles, tabbing in auto pilot mounts etc and we have learned much regarding how to do it with your glassing and laminating prowess!!

This is going to be such a badass boat

What a difference a week makes. That must feel pretty good to lay some paint down and make it look more unified. It is my son's 12th birthday today too. I have a picture of him and me at the helm of one of our boats starting at about age 3 months and every year after. We had to move from a Catalina 30 to our current Gemini 105M to accommodate his ever increasing size. He is now nearly 5'11".

Even though just a primer coat, when one color starts to cover all the different underlying pieces and contours, it really starts to look like one unified thing, and you have to feel good about the sense of it becoming more and more, not complete, but at least, "whole", instead of a motley patchwork of colors. I'd probably stare at it for hours after, myself. That feeling will multiply once the finish coats go on.
