The upcoming full moon, expected to light up the night sky, is being dubbed a super blue moon. This rare phenomenon is a combination of two rare lunar events: a supermoon, and a blue moon. While both of these events are quite exciting on their own, the combination of the two makes for a particularly special sight.
A supermoon occurs when the moon's elliptical orbit brings it closer to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. This close approach, or 'perigee', makes the moon approximately 14% bigger and 30% brighter than when it's at its farthest point, or 'apogee'. The term 'supermoon' was actually coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, and these events happen around three to four times yearly, always appearing consecutively.
The other component of the super blue moon is the blue moon, which has nothing to do with the moon's colour but is related to frequency. There are two definitions of a blue moon. The first, and most common definition, describes a second full moon in a single calendar month. The moon's cycle is around 29.5 days, slightly shorter than the average length of a calendar month, which is why this event is so rare. NASA reports that this only happens every two to three years. The next monthly blue moon is expected on May 31, 2026.
The second definition of a blue moon is a seasonal occurrence. This is when a calendar season has four full moons, instead of the usual three. The upcoming super blue moon on 19 August is of this variety. The next seasonal blue moon is predicted for May 2027.
So, on the evening of 19 August, be sure to look up at the sky, as the super blue moon will be visible for three days from Sunday morning to early Wednesday morning. Don't forget to bring your telescopes and binoculars for an even more enhanced view!
