A Rare Kosen Judo Competition Between The "Imperial" Universities In Fukuoka, Japan

Kosen judo has a different rule set than kodokan judo which is much more popular. Kosen judo is basically "old" judo. Kosen judo allows for a greater emphasis on newaza.
The objective of the match is still ippon like kodokan judo which means if you throw your partner and they land on their back, you pin or submit your opponent with a a choke or arm lock then you win.
But unlike kodokan judo you can attack the legs for single legs, leg picks, etc. but there are no leg locks although many did what looked like ankle holds and ashi garame.
IN THIS COMPETITION the "former" imperial university teams were competing against one another.
Osaka, Kyoto, Tohoku, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Tokyo and Nagoya universities.
The matches were 6 minutes long and the winner stayed.
The coach would chose who would fight next.
In the end there was a tie between Osaka university and Tohoku university.
It was pretty interesting. Like BJJ some players would pull guard or butt scoot to newaza, play half-guard, etc. But like judo would still go for throws.
This was recorded at the Budokan in Fukuoka.

@@gusnagel , not what I meant to say. Newasa techniques from Kosen Judo derivates from a Jiu-Jitsu school branch specialized in ground games (school which Conde Koma learned from). It is a different Jiu-Jitsu school branch which came from the Nagewasa techniques from Kodokhan Judo.

Thanks for sharing. It's not that Kodokan doesn't allow leg attacks, it's IJF rules. Judo itself has leg locks and attacks. Kosen is like IJF, a ruleset.

There is only one Judo. Kodokan Judo. Kosen rules were developed for Inter-Collegiate competition in around 1915-1920, Kodokan official rules were first used in 1925 - BUT THEY WERE STILL DOING KODOKAN JUDO, just with different rule sets. It's not like this caused a schism in judo. Furthermore there is zero evidence Maeda was a Kosen man. He studied at Waseda, not a Kosen school and he graduated a decade or more Kosen rules were established. He was a Kodokan emissary sent first to US and then S. America where he trained Grcies et al. So this BJJ is just Kosen judo isn't true either - the "systems" developed co-incidentally simply because they both gave greater emphasis to Ne-Waza than other rulesets.

Here's a funny comment a guy made on Reddit: "I'll say it first and risk the down votes: these guys are...not putting up a very good show. At least not compared to this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xwhXVkeSj-0.html I dunno. The RedDragon video always made me expect Kosen guys to be really something special on the ground but I suppose like anything, there are levels. I could be wrong; these could just be newly minted shodans, or it could be a weird artifact of the editing. Thanks for the upload!" THE FUNNY THING ABOUT THAT is that the team in the "Reddragon" video (Kyoto university) lost in the competition above.

I mean they are special, because they are very rare and even though it’s very similar to BJJ Kosen Judo has a different approach to things. So that makes them special. However if you thought they were technically much better than BJJ I think you were a bit misguided, because in the end it’s technically just the same it has only a slightly different ruleset and every Kosen Judoka can be as good as every BJJ competitior and whether under which ruleset they fight would give the guy who is familiar with the rules an advantage. Extra paragraph: Something interesting to mention is how Kosen judo influenced the philosophy of BJJ. If you look at BJJ it has many rivalries between different schools, which isn’t very normal in Kodokan Judo. I think that may be something from Kosen Judo.

@@aluisiofsjr No, Kosen (高専, kōsen) is an abbreviation of kōtō senmon gakkō (高等専門学校), literally 'higher speciality school', and refers to the colleges of technology in Japan that cater for students from age 15 to 20. So, Kosen is something like the university league. It is the same Judo with different competition rules. It is not something allowed or not to exist, you can do it right now. Even in Kodokan, there are people training with this set of rules in mind, older judokas usually meet in training on Thursdays.

Chris Chiang Newaza was developed in its current form post 1890s at the handa dojo as Mataemon tanabe’s personally developed system seperate from his fusen ryu. And his newaza was adopted by judo in the early 1900s and futher developed by Judokas. So yes there was NO real ground grappling in japanese jujutsu before 1890s and none in ANY traditional jujutsu system in japan. Fun fact google all tradtional jujutsu styles and watch there videos on youtube youll see zero newaza. Also judo is not a unified system of all japanese jujutsu... its based mainly on tenjin shinyo ryu, kito ryu and kano’s own personal developed inventions and techniques along with steay techniques here n there from western wrestling and tanabe’s newaza system.

@@mongolchiuud8931the meeting of all jujutsu schools under Butokukai isn't it they decide the formation of a unified system? See the link below. Another example Masahiko Kimura's newaza doesnt come from Fusen Ryu, at least there is no evidence of it, and his lineage of teacher is not from Kano but he is absorbed into Kodokan judo. Most of the old school system discontinue their school and joined as part of Kodokan. photos.app.goo.gl/u7ggMomyaxKoR2vC6

Chris Chiang you must have reading problems as i never said newaza came from fusen ryu. I said tanabes newaza was a system he came up with seperate from his fusen ryu. I made that quite clear. Also the butokukai was a martial arts organization to govern the various styles not unify them into one style/system. And the butokukai is from ww2 era japan....judo was founded in 1880s-1890s...lmao Also judo at that time was a new style so of course a lot of students of judo were originally from other “older” systems. Common sense really. And you must be a troll as i said there is no newaza in any old jujutsu system and a ll prove it. Show a link or video of any pre 1900s jujutsu style/system that shows any form of ground grappling. Kuz you cant..because it doesn’t exist. Haha (There are around 30 koryu(ancient) jujutsu system listed by then japanese government and they all still exist in japan today, then google any of there names and search on RU-vid of there kata and practice. There is literally no ground work today in any of them. And no records of ground work either because ground grappling is an entirely new concept in kanos time.
