A real time drive around the coastline of the United Kingdom - Day 1

Join us as we make our 5,108 mile real time drive, by road, around the coastline of the United Kingdom. Full disclosure - we haven’t completed Northern Ireland yet but when we do we’ll add that to the total mileage.
The intention was to take the longest possible route, driving as close to the coast as possible and never using a Motorway! We tried to see as much of our coastline as we could.
The journey had some dark and drizzly days to begin with, but many were sunny and truly beautiful, especially the west coast of Scotland.
The journey took about 30 full days to complete. Our campervan ‘Minty’ served us very well; he is a 2005 Timberland Independence with a 2.8L Fiat Ducato manual gearbox.
In order to find the route closest to the coast we needed to use Google Maps, hence the constant verbal navigation by whomever wasn’t driving. Oh, and sorry about Bev’s occasional swearing!
On days 1 and 2 we learned that even in UK conditions the GoPro Hero 9 could not handle 4k and overheated a number of times, hence the occasional editing fades and the noise produced by the vents trying to cool the camera. We resolved this by changing to 1080p and had no further overheating and therefore very few edits.
I gave lots of thought to producing silent videos or to leave all voice and background noise in and unedited. If you don’t like our noise, please turn us down!
We had lockdowns, breakdowns, flat tyres, closed roads, golf courses, the occasional wrong turn and all manner of friendly disagreements but, overall, we loved the adventure.
It’s a long ride, so buckle up!!
Jon, Bev and Charlie

As an American who would love to travel to the UK, I found this wonderful. And I can’t believe those small, charming roads...certainly much different than what I’m used to. Thanks for sharing your trip!

Very kind of you to say Jeremy. Some areas were delightful, others not. Glad you're enjoying!

This video would been better titled as the hedgerows of coastal B roads of little Britain. I am glad you have a population of 60 million. Pedestrians and cyclists seem to be fair game for the errant driver. I had a good laugh when I saw the tractor boys impeding the traffic. Seemed like you had good fun creating this project.

Can you edit this and use colons in place of the periods? The periods break the link.

It's perfect, I love it! Always dreamed of making a UK based road trip! I think you got lost around 20:03. I am following you on Google Maps, now I need to find out where you are! I'll try to watch the whole series, although it's going to take a while! Best wishes from Greece! ❤️

I was attracted to your choosing to use small roads. But after an hour or so it seemed (on my screen) to me you were driving on small roads but at the speeds of the larger roads. I was hoping for small roads and being able to enjoy the journey. I did enjoy the conversation between the two of you. It seems you really enjoy each others company.

We hope you can still enjoy. The camera effect seems to make the driving look fast but I promise a 20 year old camper van doesn't have the suspension for too much adventure! We just decided to leave the microphone on, nothing to hide. Cheers

Started to watch this and decided to subscribe to you channel. Looking like this will be enjoyable. Only thing missing would be captions on where you were. I.e. road names and town/village names.
@Geovanni69
@Geovanni69 3 года назад
Good point Paul. I decided that as many villages are marked with their own naming signs I wouldn't replicate, as we travelled through many hundreds of areas that would have added many many hours to editing. Cheers

@@Geovanni69 Not to disrespect any of the other views here, however, I love your video exactly as it is. It make s me feel almost like I do out on my motorbike, out getting happily lost all over the UK, which has brought me some of the most joyful hours of my life (and there have been a few, lucky me). I have a different reason for watching though - it is also perfect for helping me concentrate on my repetitive guitar practice, and makes it all more enjoyable at the same time. Thank you guys. I have watched a few, including USA and Africa - but this is the best by far. Don't change a thing!

Was it me or did the sound go out of sync with the picture around the 2hr 50min mark?
@Geovanni69
@Geovanni69 3 года назад
You're right Paul, I've just checked the original file and the sound is in sync a few minutes before and a few minutes after but at 2.48 we lose sync. Also a bit of audio crackle that I'd not noticed before, maybe linked. Hope it doesn't happen too often as this project cannot/will not be repeated!

@@Geovanni69 how long did it take you & what did you use to plan your route ie sat nav, Google maps ?
@Geovanni69
@Geovanni69 3 года назад
@@thetravellingbeachpirates the journey took 30 days of driving over a period of about 3 months. If I recall about 180 hours of driving. There is no navigation software, that I could find, that will always guide you to 'the road closest' to the sea/coastline. All routing was done using Google Maps and literally by the 'navigator' watching the route and guiding verbally the 'driver'. Two humans and one puppy made the glory happen! Feel free to ask if you have any further queries.
