A Really Fun Day Riding the Elkins New Tygart Flyer

Love the username! I used to live out on what used to be "The Pike" outside of Wheeling. Took some drone shots of the old Valley Camp No. 3 property. Lovely stretch of holler.

WVC is the State ( WV State Rail Authority ) owned RR property in that area. State also owns the South Branch Valley RR which is why more than one name for the State owned RR properties. Just like the State owns the track and equipment at Cass Scenic. They also do the long term maintenance on the track at Elkins. D&GVRR is the operator (under contract to operate it and the Cass Scenic ) and the run at Durbin. For years the Cass Scenic RR employees were State employees. D&GVRR does routine track work on the WVC and marketing for all three. The former ( CSX ) WM track also was owned by the same company that owned the mill at Cass at one time. West Virginia Spruce Lumber Company owned Cass. Back then the Cass railroad operation was known as the Greenbrier and Elk River RR. When WV Pulp & Paper ( now known as Westvaco ) bought the operation, they expanded the line which includes the track from Bergoo to Tygart and changed the name to the G&CV RR ( Greenbrier & Cheat Valley RR to Greenbrier, Cheat and Elk RR ( GC&E RR) later ). That track later was sold to the WM. B&O controlled the WM until it was merged into the B&O in 1976. C&O had control of the B&O from 1963 and finally merged it into the C&O in April of 1987. SBD ( Family Lines ) then merged into CSX to form CSXT. Seaboard System is who qualified me to operate on the Homestead Branch ( Florida ) as a crew member as an Engineer, ( never actually ran on it ) Conductor ( did on one trip ) and Brakeman for our local museum. Homestead Branch is now out of service South of SW 137 Ave ( Just S of the museum ).

D&GV RR & 67 is the other FP7 A unit and is an ex Clinchfield RR / CSX loco.

@@ccrx6700 Sadly, good women like you're wife are far and few between. I grew up around the depression era WW2 gen and they had values and stuck with each other. When other kids my age were playing together, I was hanging out at the WW2 vets house helping him in his garage or mowing his lawn or doing something for him. Of course my grandparents were depression era WW2 gen.

@@ccrx6700 It is Thurmond West Virginia - Amtrak is building a new station there. It is a flag stop only. Great video - lotsa green - where I live there is loads of brick and pavement. There are still coal trains that come through Thurmond. Check out Jaw Tooth videos.

One of our former loco operators here actually went up to Alaska to see the Alaskan RR. He said the locos were so clean you could eat off them. White Pass and Yukon I read a couple of years ago in Railway Track Structures magazine about them building a new loop track. It would be awesome if we could ever get up there to ride those 2. Very much appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend. I used to watch Alaskan RR shows when they were on cable TV, but we don't get cable anymore.

@@ccrx6700 I enjoy birds as well and maintain 3 feeding stations, plus a squirrel feeder. In the spring we have a male/female pair of mallard ducks that also feed on the dropped seed from the feeders. There is a brook that borders our property. This is where they nest. We have a couple of other mallards that visit as well. Close to 20 species of birds feed at our location. Once in awhile Pete the possum and Lenny the raccoon stop in as well. I built a heated shelter for two cats that adopted us. They come into the house but do not linger long. I guess they feel uncomfortable with our puggle Shilo, but they all get along when they're out side.

@@ccrx6700 I will be here forever I will always be a loyal subscriber and my brother signed up just the past weekend and he loves you videos he's seen three or four of them and he said once he has some more time to watch him he's going to watch all of them. And I got my father interested in your videos as well once he gets out of the hospital he said he's definitely going to be watching more videos where he is they're very strict on cell phones and electronics in his room for some reason because of all the equipment he's on so I got kind of yelled at when I brought my phone in there and I had him watch a couple videos but boy it put a smile on his face he said he's never heard of that railroad before but he said what a very interesting railroad where you work he said. Maybe in the future they might install a Ashley working set of dates with lights and bells on that railroad crossing you have in the yard where the train pulls in to unload the coal just before that I noticed a little railroad crossing there that would be awesome if they would just put a set of dates in right there. Not necessarily with the arms but at least with the lights in the bells that would be cool.

I go to the Illinois RR museum (Union IL) often as I have family out there and they ask if I want to be up in the engine... I usually turn them down and like riding in the last pass car instead.... if you're ever in the Chicago area it's an awesome museum.... they have so much equipment.... stay safe Dave....

And since the boiler was replaced by HEP, you see the red receptacle on the blind end in Dave's video. The FP7A is a little longer than an F-7A ( 4.5 feet ). Largest operators of the FP7 were the the former CSXT companies, Atlantic Coast Line (44 )/Clinchfield (1 ) / C&O ( 23 ( 16 A, 7 B ) )/L&N ( 45 ) for a total of 113 of them.

Very good observation CentralFan1976. I'm not that familiar with those, but are wondering if they were in place to feed a steam generator for heating coach cars? I do know many later EMD's did have an option available for a steam generator on their locos for heating purposes. Thanks for writing in and for watching my friend.

@@ccrx6700 Steam generators were dual purpose. In the winter, they heated the cars. In the summer, those same boilers could be used to cool those cars. It depended on whether the car had ice/mechanical/steam jet cooling.

I've heard the Cass tickets sell out quick for the fall excursions, I can see why. it has to be totally gorgeous there when the leaves are turning. You may also want to consider riding Western Maryland Scenic, there will be a couple of videos of our ride out soon on that one. it's a pretty cool ride too. But not telling you what to do, just a suggestion. Wheeling has some pretty good rail fanning around if your into that. Very much appreciate your joining us on today's ride and writing in my friend.

@@ccrx6700 i was engineer there for 12 years. They also have a BL2. It's an original WM unit. Beautiful place to operate trains. Being a short line, I also was a track inspector. I really enjoy your videos! Keep it up!

@@ccrx6700 I have a very,I’ve,y wife who does love very much. She to does care for me. But thru this operation if I fell at home there is no way she could get me on. Y feet. Let alone help me get out of bed. As it is it takes to big ladies to help me out of bed. Takes one who knows what she is doing to get me back on my bed. I’ve lost 15 pounds since the 2 November. I’m down to 204. Now am half sitting drinking a cup of green tea. How is your wife doing?

It certainly is a very nice ride and what a clean town that is Wayne, I was totally impressed with Elkins, no rif raff at all and everything was very nice and clean. Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the video my friend.

It's not deleted, that's the old cable type fuel cutoff where you lift the cover and pull the cord.

Thanks Bill, never heard it called EFCO but I can see why. On our locos we have the red button. Thankfully I've only had to use it once as I gave track clearance for a hi rail truck to get on and a train operator working the remote disobeyed me and started to run his train towards the crossing. Always a pleasure to have you visit with me my friend and share your wealth of knowledge.

I've heard of the Greenbrier, but did not know you could tour it, I will have to do a bit of research on that, I would love to see it. Did not know of the other bunkers either, very interesting and thanks for sharing that with me. I love to learn new things like that. Guess it wouldn't be a "secret' bunker if everyone knew where it was at.... LOL I remember that train accident and thought it a bit strange they were in that location, you certainly may be on to something with your line of thinking there!
