It's a nice looking box but speaking as someone who of necessity has struggled with Linux for 25+ years, and sincerely hates the OS, I really don't get who this is for... IMO people who use Linux fall in to one of two categorises: -Those who have to use it on occasion, and sincerely hate it for the horrible and unintuitive mess that it is in all it's forms once you scratch below the semi-inviting surface - proof you can polish a turd... but a turd is still a turd no matter how well buffed it is. -Those who get a kick out of being the master of the magic that is unintelligible to mere mortals. The former, like me, are probably using and designing custom hardware and are often saddled with Linux simply because it and it's dev tools are free and available. The latter would never buy an off the shelf system because building your own rig is all part of the magic-nerd persona. So a 'normal' user buy's this system and finds they can't do their 'normal' stuff with it... what next? Start down the rabbit hole of many, many, scattered and unintuitive config files and the unhappy necessity of a command line when such a paradigm was dropped by everyone else 20+ years ago in the hope of getting it to do the things they want? All while running the gauntlet of the RTFM brigade when confusion inevitably results in their asking questions? I would expect anyone unfortunate to buy one of these systems, either by mistake or because they actually want to get in to Linux but have already demonstrated their 'lack the fortitude' to even build their own system, will quickly shout "Nope!" and either sling the whole thing in a cupboard and go buy a 'proper PC' or bung a less aggravating OS on it.

@@Gaming4LifeDE Well as far as I remember, when he did the "iSwitched to Mac" series, he reviewed it as if he was a regular user or something like that. Like he didn't try to do video editing on it(though that's something very doable in Linux). Anyways, I'm not a Linux user myself, but it would still be interesting to see such a video, at least to me.

@@vesk4000 I gave up on M$ in 2009 and never looked back. Linux Mint Mate has got to be the most polished and dead-easiest distro there is. It even comes with it's own software manager for installing most-used programs. Yes, there's a lot of proprietary software out there that only runs on M$ but you can say the same about Mac-only software, too. Kdenlive is a free and open-source video editing software if that's your thing....and though I consider myself still a "basic" user, I've been able to dabble in Linux enough to get things to work without any huge issues. I'm self-employed as a residential computer tech and I can honestly say that I want to kiss this PC when I get home after a looooong day of troubleshooting all of the M$ disasters I see.

Davinci Resolve, is not just an industry leading color grading software, but also a fully fledged NLE, VFX compositer and DAW, with lots of people switching over from premiere or final cut x, so its a really big deal that it is available for linux, cos you basically don’t need anything else.
@herranton
@herranton 5 лет назад
@intrnl Resolve is color grading software first. No one on any project worth real money is grading in the Adobe suite. Resolve is nearly always used on every big budget project where the colorist and editor are not the same person, regardless of what program they are using for editing. If your end to end workflow is entirely in the adobe suite, or fcpx, you are still just a youtuber. The fact that resolve includes a great nle and a world class sound suite, and the whole thing is free, is just icing on the cake.

I don't think the intended market here is replacement of desktops for the average user. More like a workstation. I could really see this looking attractive to a tech savvy research lab in academia. I do bioinformatics, and the higher end specs of these would make for a great dev box. This makes a lot of sense especially for a research group with only one or two people doing computational work, and the rest do more traditional wet-lab stuff. Most universities have HPC systems you can log into but it's cumbersome to do iterative work on those systems. However, most of the data is larger than you want to use your personal machine for. Also, 99% of research computing happens in a linux environment with open source software.

Big Linux fan here. Appreciate the efforts of system 76 for things like disabling Intel me by default. But just as Linus said, most heavy Linux users would just build their own machine. (sometimes even not x86 based, like my rockpro64 nas) And I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu as the daily driver. Hardware enthusiasts can't stand the slow kernel update. We need mainline kernels as fast as possible, definitely not something Ubuntu provides by default. And for driver and steam, Arch also provides super easy way to install, although installing Arch itself is not that straightforward. Hope system76 good luck, but it's going to be a battle uphill.

Adam Queen excellent feedback but Arch is relatively simple as long as you follow the guide on their wiki and install the software you need out of the box to finish system configuration
@AdamQueen
@AdamQueen 5 лет назад
@@swordkorn To be honest, I don't really remember how easy/hard installing Arch is. As after installing Arch, I didn't ever need to re-install Arch on my desktop/laptop/NAS. Even upgrading to extra SSD/data migration is all done online using LVM. Since it's so infrequent to install Arch, no matter how easy/hard installing is, it doesn't matter much. But pure CLI based installation indeed drives a lot of newbie away.

@bryanwithawhy
@bryanwithawhy 5 лет назад
I agree that System76 systems are pricey, but comparably cheaper than the designer/boutique style as seen in Apple products. You pay less than Apple systems and received far greater performance - that's a win. Nearly all of the games I play, when I play them, are capable of being played in a Linux environment, so there is really nothing keeping me in the Windows-sphere right now other than the type of work I do. I've been shopping around for systems built specifically for Linux and I keep arriving back at System76. At the end of the day, they are a system builder no different than Digital Storm and Puget Systems, so there are always added costs for man power for building and support of products. I have no problem paying them the costs for the quality of the product and the excellent support they have to back it up. By the end of the year, I'll own a System76 system (laptop and desktop), and I will be leaving the Windows-verse behind for good (other than work of course).

@bryanwithawhy
@bryanwithawhy 5 лет назад
@@gnarlin4964 I would argue that the "tax" from Microsoft isn't one of actual money. The OS costs $200, and you don't usually see that cost in built systems (i.e. HP, Dell, etc.). The "tax" is one of privacy and it is hard to quantify the costs associated with privacy as every individual will value their privacy differently. Nevertheless, not having to deal with privacy issues with an operating system is definitely a bonus. Of course, that says nothing for the privacy over the Internet, but that is a whole other conversation.

Would also prefer a pre installed Linux for 2 main reasons: (1) Means no pre installed windows, hence no licence fee for something I would probably never use, and (2) I am sure that all hardware have good Linux drivers. I like their " No exceptions" approach, giving a real keyboard, rgb backlights, system integration, build quality, etc. I often find laptops have one thing I want, but not all of it, and it right about checks every box. I will say I don't LUKS encrypt my drives though, mostly because of the pain in the butt workaround when it goes wrong; And how possible it is to go wrong. You'll only do that once to save your 1 byte encrypted drive to never do it again. Additionally, gparted used to not be able to mount luks partitions, neither could disks, in ubuntu or gnome disks, but the problem has since resolved itself with an update at some point. Overall, very satisfied.

OS had these issues, but a few things I did not like about my experience: - Needing the terminal for everything (I understand enough to do what I want to do, doesn't mean I enjoy using it.) - No support or terrible support for some more obscure games made with some very specific/unpopular game engines (cough cough Wolf RPG Engine). This can be very bad for fangame enthusiasts! - Needing to get help with these unsupported games in the first place. Which can potentially be a very long turnaround time if the support even happens. - Desktop shortcut creation was a pain in the rear. All things considered the experience was nowhere near horrible. I have a soft spot for Linux and am really looking forward to building a second PC later with Pop! OS installed to see how things have changed since I last used this kind of OS.

That wouldn't have been such an issue if the System76 people had mentioned it on the website, but they didn't. So I have a five-bay external enclosure where I put all my old 3.5" archival drives. I like that it bases off a version based release. This makes it easier to support than rolling releases. Dealing with bugs in rolling releases is like playing wack-a-mole. I don't like what Ubuntu is doing but Debian doesn't have a PPA infrastructure support for organizations / companies distribute their software outside the open source ecosystem. I'm a pragmatist when it comes to Linux software. As long as they support it, I'm okay with it.
