A Reenchanted World sounds kind of interesting based on the stuff I read. Never heard of it before, thanks Vin

Perhaps the _Paganism For Beginners_ book has been lauded, because, it implicates paganism with the devil, playing on the the links to devil-worship no doubt as a rhetorical device. The Green Man for example is just not the devil or anything to do with the devil...

@@richarddelanet I think a lot of discussion around paganism and especially witchcraft (which often overlap) carries the baggage of the Satanic Panic of the ‘80s and ‘90s, creating a protective impulse to distance themselves from any discussion of the Devil. However, more traditional witches (many of whom are also pagans) have recently grown more open about invoking the Devil in their practice. It’s of course not really the Christian Devil, but more an aspect of something like the Horned-God, etc. My point was that the reality seems more complicated than the book suggests.

@@revenantreads The protective impulse which you mention is i think just old fashioned Christian propaganda. The horned-god is also a piece of Christian propaganda, by giving horns to the devil, the older pagan pre-Christian religions of north-west Europe are (forever) marginalised. If present day females are invoking the devil - which i am sceptical of - then they are not pagans or anything to do with pre-christian religion. And therefore the book does seem to tie in with these rhetorical lines.

Paganism is the single most religion I have felt most at home, but my struggle to establish a relationship with any sort of deity has made me drift in and out of it. I personally started my journey with Paganism by Joyce & River Higginbotham (a very Paganism 101 book, trying to cast as wide a net as possible) and Wicca by Scott Cunningham (very Wicca-centred and has many examples of rituals). Both are rather old publications, to be fair. I haven't heard of the book you mentioned - all my books on the topic are from the 90s or earlier, with few 00s. What I appreciate about Paganism is how open it is - how there is no one right dogma. I personally think nature is just as, if not more, important as deity in Paganism.

Scott Cunningham was an amazing author, I have several of his books. For me Starhawk, Spiral Dance was my first read on the subject. I also agree about nature being a major part of the pagan path.

Thank you for commenting! I appreciate hearing your perspective. I read Cunningham’s Guide for the Solitary Practitioner back in the 90s as a teen after I left Christianity but it just didn’t fit. The last three decades I’ve been purely secular, but I’ve grown to appreciate pagan rituals (plus an infusion of the mythopoetic) and the ways they can mark the year and help one focus on nature. It’s these aspects, sans belief in deities, that have most interested me.

Hi Maisie, Vivianne Crowley has an interesting book on Wicca. She is a lecturer on the Psychology of Religion at London University. It is a full introduction to the ideas, world view and practice.

Really enjoyed this video 👍 I agree about giving sources so readers can do follow up. The reenchanted world sounds interesting. Other authors you may enjoy Starhawk, The Earth Path - she talks about permaculture as well as being pagan, she also has a RU-vid channel. Anything by Scott Cunningham, he was Wiccan, easy to read and understand. Ann Moura - she focuses on Green Witchcraft. Yes I have many others I can suggest as something I have been reading about for decades. I no longer have a name for my path, my focus is definitely nature and I believe in a creative source.

I read some Cunningham as a teen. While I like the Wheel of the Year, Wicca is definitely not for me. I’ve been looking more towards animism and atheopagan practices with a heaping of Norse flavoring to bring ritual and celebration into my calendar year.

@@revenantreads I like Cunningham because although Wicca is not my thing, he does offer a variety of information about crystals, wheel of the year and everyday practices that focus on nature. I also read a lot of green and Celtic craft books as they also focus on nature and everyday practices, which for me makes more sense. Being mindful and aware means not taking events, people etc for granted and being grateful in the moment - for me the other day being able to watch a dragonfly going past was a big deal, means I don't have to wait for winning lotto max to feel blessed, but not saying that wouldn't be awesome as well.

I'm not sure that the "horned god" mentioned in the Paganism book referred to Satan. Of course, during the witch trials, many people were accused of consorting with the devil. But in modern witchcraft and wicca, the "horned god" tends to refer to the male spirit of nature or the Celtic god Cernunnos. If you haven't already seen it, I think Neo-Paganism Historical Inspiration & Contemporary Creativity would be interesting. (It's both a book and a website.)

The horned-god and Satan correlation is something I’ve seen on some Traditional Witchcraft RU-vid channels, from some who are both pagans and witches. Of course, it may be that the majority don’t associate Cernunnos with the Satan, but there are certainly some practitioners who do. I think the book was trying to sidestep any of the more controversial aspects of paganism.

Hmmm, yeh that claim about magic is a showstopper for me. There's a few red flags with that author, for example she offers courses on witchcraft 🤭 It seems like a marketing brochure to me.

Modern witchcraft is something I’m still trying to wrap my head around. I don’t believe spells or magical practices have any outward effect, but I can see them as having value as personal rituals that can help to focus the practitioner and create a sense of catharsis.
