In this ride-along series installation, we explore some of the streets and cycle paths of Rotterdam, NL, by bike. I compiled this video from previously unreleased footage that I shot during a PeopleForBikes Big Jump study tour to The Netherlands, which included visits to Utrecht, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam.
A special thanks goes out to Warner Beumer for leading this fabulous and instructive tour.

Hi Everyone! My name is John Simmerman, and I’m a health promotion and public health professional with over 30 years of experience. Over the years, my area of concentration has evolved into a specialization in how the built environment influences human behavior related to active living and especially active mobility.
Since 2010, I've been exploring, documenting, and profiling established, emerging, and aspiring Active Towns wherever they might be while striving to produce high-quality multimedia content to help inspire the creation of more safe and inviting, environments that promote a "Culture of Activity" for "All Ages & Abilities."
The Active Towns Channel features my original video content and reflections, including a selection of podcast episodes and short films profiling the positive and inspiring efforts happening around the world as I am able to experience and document them.
Thanks once again for tuning in! I hope you find this content helpful and insightful.

I've always felt that visiting Rotterdam is the better option for policymakers and activists from North America. Rotterdam was heavily bombed in WWII and had to be rebuilt pretty much from scratch after 1945 during a time when city planners were infatuated with cars. So Rotterdam is the most car-centric city in the Netherlands and somewhat reminiscent of North American cities in terms of its streetscape and highrise architecture. This makes it easier for North American visitors to envision what bicycle infrastructure might look like in their hometown. Places like Amsterdam, Delft or The Hague are centered entirely around their historic cores. While they do have more modern neighborhoods around the center, these don't usually have a core function within the urban area in question. So visiting those cities will be somewhat less relevant for North American policymakers. Policymakers from smaller American towns might also learn a lot by visiting Almere, which is a 'new' town built from scratch in the 1970s. It, too, was built with the car in mind and has seen extensive implementation of new infrastructure for walking and cycling in more recent decades.

Yes, this is precisely the context of our study tour visit to Rotterdam. There were delegates from many different North American cities of similar scale participating in this tour. Although we didn't visit Almere on this particular multi-city tour, some of us did visit Houten, also as an example of a 'new' town mostly built from scratch, but with a plan for 'managing the car.' Thanks so much for watching and for these thoughtful comments. Cheers! John

Wow...!!...😆...My birthplace and where I lived most of my life...love it...! Since my youth I have seen the city develop bit by bit...from the first red bike lanes and watertaxi's to the new public transport net like Randstadrail...Rotterdam is very different to other Dutch cities cause they could start a new design from scratch after the bombardment in WWII...now it has become a very modern city and the trade center of the Netherlands...or as we say here: Rotterdam Earns... The Hague Distributes... and Amsterdam spends...😉

0:11 Honestly just look at that scene, that scene looks pretty much exactly what mockups of planned redesigns that are often made to show an example of what a things could look like or the ideal vision of what the designers want something to look like, but as we all know, they never end up looking like with those mockups show, but here, they actually did it! They took a redesign mockup and just dropped it into a real city. I'm from the Netherlands and I couldn't not make a comment about how unreal this scene looked.

I hear ya... Definitely worth appreciating as well that this represents part of the Rotterdam 3.0 (1.0 Pre WWII and 2.0 the immediate Post WWII design) evolution. Cheers!

Nice to watch this particular video 😍 The first minutes is actually what I bike daily, living straight behind Rotterdam Central Station, working at the Weena. Having lived in Rotterdam since 1969 I saw it change tremendously overtime. Thanks as always for your nice videos!

That shot at 06:45 really shows what Dutch urban planning could do for North American cities, as this could be anywhere in that part of the world.

This video is on biking, but what a nice comment from a (fellow?) Dutchman on a Dutchman who tries to accommodate foreigners in a best possible way. As a resident of Rotterdam I see an increasing number of foreigners, expats, residing in Rotterdam, who don't speak Dutch, who even don't do any efforts to learn. By the way, would love to hear your English ....

Warner is a real Rotterdammerd as you can hear ;p In the past Rotterdam was very carcentric and the citycenter is even bad for cars to get out but they change a lot so hopefully its getter better wich i believe in.

You pointed to Noordereiland and De Hef, but I think you should have taken a detour over the Willemsbrug and on towards the Erasmusbrug to get to De Veerhaven. And yes, part of that route shows places where the biking infrastructure needs upgrading.
