Another older video but worth sharing. This time of koala mum Gidja and her baby joey Boorie who were rescued last year and have both been successfully released since.
Boorie was a back young joey at the time of about seven months old and they were both found on the side of the road, with Gidja looking quite stressed and disorientated.
We think Gidja sustained a traumatic brain injury and following treatment by our vets and rehabilitation with our volunteer koala carers, after two months we were able to release her back to the wild. This is an incredible success story for Gidja, Friends of the Koala and koalas in the Northern Rivers. Gidja can now go on to have more joeys and increase our koala populations.
Whilst in care Gidja stopped producing milk for Boorie and with supplement feeds he began to gain weight. We made the tough decision to release Gidja and keep Boorie because he still very much needed milk feeds.
Boorie spent time in home care with our carer Vickii and before long he joined the other joeys in Koala Kindy. Earlier this year, Boorie was released with his pal Nimbus and are both off living the wild life. He is available on our koala adoption program!
