A review and comparison of the new Red Series Nylgut banjo strings from Aquila Corde Armoniche.
Aquila, the company that makes Nylgut strings, sent me a trial set of a new string they've made, Red Series Nylgut. As Mimmo from Nylgut explained: "Instead of increasing each gauge I was able to increase the density of each string. So all 4 strings have similar diameters. This can be done using different quantities of metal copper powder added to the melted Nylgut during the extrusion of the product. Explanation: on a traditional banjo set, the strings have very different diameters. Unfortunately, the thicker the string, the duller the sound. In fact it is well known that the 3rd string is duller than the 2nd and the 2nd duller than the 1st. With this innovative solution the problem is now solved: banjos now work like harps -- all the strings have the same bright sound. On these sets, gauges are thinner than those of traditional white Nylgut while the the tension is exactly the same. Performance: brighter sound than Fluocarbon & Nylgut strings, closer to metal strings. More sustain. More powerful than Nylgut & Fluocarbon strings."
I already had a set of the original white Nylguts on my old S.S. Stewart, so I made a recording of it still strung with them for comparison before swapping them out for the new red set and recording again. Both sets are "classic" gauge. (I'll call the old strings "white" for the rest of this review. I think there's also a more recent gut-colored set of Nylguts, but from what I've read they're the same as the white, it just being the color that was changed.)
First impression: the new strings are definitely red -- almost candy apple red! It's a color that might give the traditionalist pause. I suppose once upon a time phosphor bronze looked out of place on a string too. It's a little funny to see on the Stewart, but I'm getting used to it.
Compared to the white Nylgut, these strings seemed to stretch out fairly quickly. I put them on, tuned up roughly and let the banjo sit for an hour or two. Tuned up again and I was able to play more or less, though having to do some fairly heavy tweaking between tunes. You wouldn't want to put these on right before a gig, though maybe you could quicken the process some by hand-stretching the strings. In the video, the red strings had been on the banjo for about two days and were good and stable.
By eye (I don't have calipers to measure their diameters accurately) the difference between the 1st and 2nd strings of the different sets doesn't look all that great, on the 3rd though it's quite noticeable. The 4th string in this red set is unwound -- there are white sets with an unwound 4th, but mine was wound so I can't compare them. The unwound red 4th sounds good, doesn't feel unduly stiff and its big advantage is that its timbre is the same as the rest of the strings. Personally though, I think I prefer a wound string -- its timbre is different from the other strings of course, but that's something that can be used to advantage, like for a bassy drone.
The red strings are lightly textured, which I like. On the white sets, I would roughen up the right hand playing area of the strings with 600 or 1000 grit sandpaper to give them a little more grab, like gut has. I'll probably do the same on these eventually but out of the package I already like their feel more. As well, they feel quite a bit stiffer than the white, which I also prefer - the white classic gauge felt a little mushy to me (though the feel of the heavier gauge minstrel set suits me fine).
The sound of these new strings is bright and sharp, as you can hear in the video -- which I also like. In the clawhammer section, I'm playing with my short index finger nail, but with a longer nail or a pick, they're even brighter.
Since changing the strings on the Stewart from minstrel gauge to classic a while ago, I haven't been playing it as much, but I think I'll be picking it up more often now.
The finger-picked tune is "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)" by Harry Dacre, played in gDGBD, and the clawhammer tune "Shortenin' Bread", in the same tuning. The two sets of videos were recorded a few days apart, thus the costume changing.

Thank you for posting this! I'm hunting for the right banjo for me (without being able to try them out at the store since there aren't any near me) and this is really helpful!

Glad it helped! There's a lot you can do with a banjo once you get it to change the sound - change or adjust the head, the bridge, strings...

Thanks for that, and great playing too. I think I prefer the mellower old white strings, for me the reds are moving back towards a metal string sound. Definitely a matter of personal preference.

Yeah, definitely brighter. Listening to it again now, I might prefer the white strings too. The real solution is of course, more banjos!

@@harvdog5669 Hi Harvey. You can put nylon or Nylgut strings on your banjo, but the slots in the nut and bridge will probably need widening - synthetic strings are fatter than steel. It's been a long time, but I think you're right that they're 11Bs. However, they're finicky strings. Or were - this video is from 11 years ago. They tended to break in unexpected places. If you're just getting started with nylon/Nylgut, I would get something like the Aquila 5B, or plain nylon strings like from Labella. All the best!

Yeah, they are quite a bit sharper sounding. Well worth a try. Apparently minstrel gauge red strings aren't available yet, but they'll be interesting as well.

This strings sound amazing for non-metal strings, quite close to it, and probably comfortable. I have nylguts on an old fretless banjo a friend made from a tenor pot that I use for minstrel banjo and fooling around, and they last forever, and stay in tune forever unlike nylon and the cursed gut strings. I will write you offlist a bit about what I dont like about this tendency. Your admirer. Tony

They're worth a try (any kind of nylon/Nylgut/gut). Quite a different sound and feel from steel.

Hi Bill, Interesting! I didn't have that problem at all. And they're all still on there. But I just tie a square knot on one end and run it straight up through the slotted pegs on my No-Knot tailpiece. One guy on the Banjohangout did have a similar problem to yours. He was apparently using a bowline knot as he usually does for Nyguts and it broke 5 times. So he tried a figure eight knot and that apparently worked.

I like the classic nylguts better than the medium, louder, and I like the wound fourth, i've got a real old banjo I restored, the 1st string pops out of the nut a bit now, but have been reluctant too deepen the groove, probably just paranoid it would ruin set-up...still I would get these in heart beat to try!!!! thanks cj

Regardless of breaking or not, (I have had trouble with Nylgut 1st strings) I use Chris Sands - usually heavy, have never had a string break and they seem to last forever. I don't know that I want a brighter sound when I'm using nylon. The heavy gauge Sands strings pull out plenty of volume.

I see more people with that problem on the BHO too. I wonder if they had a bad batch or if it's more general? Anyway, good that they refunded you so easily. And hopefully Aquila will get it sorted out as they are nice strings when they aren't breaking!

Sorry, I don't know about the minstrel sets. There's a thread on the BanjoHangout about these new strings where Mimmo, from Aquila, has answered some questions. You might ask him there.

Wow, they sound so much better than the white Nylgut. Even when you pick the 5th string at the end, you can really hear the difference. More crisp and focused. Do you know if they are gonna make these reds in a minstrel set? Thanks for posting this. Exciting news.

Cool. I know what you mean about messing with things like that nut. If you ever decide to deepen it, and if you don't have the proper files, torch tip cleaners do a pretty good job.

I picked up a set of the "New Nylgut" Classic Banjo strings that only has the red 4th string about 2 weeks ago, everything's fine except I managed to break the 5th string due to me being stupid and slicing it with a brass pick, but other than that I've had no issues with them.

It's been so long since I've tried the La Bella strings that I couldn't compare them. These new red strings are significantly stiffer than the the white Nylgut though.

Is it breaking at the knot? The square knot I used has held ok so I haven't had to experiment more. If you search on the banjohangout, you'll find a couple of threads about the red strings, maybe there will be something helpful in those. Sorry!

Hi Hunter, I just put what was called "New Nylgut" Classic strings on my friends S.S. Stewart, it has a red bass string, I tied a loop on the ends, as I have done in the past, and the red bass broke at the knot on the loop while the banjo was sitting around, I couldn't spot anything rough that could of cut it, so I put another one on and a week goes by and as it was sitting next to me, pop it broke again. I was wondering if you had any similar experiences?
@HunterRobertson
@HunterRobertson 10 лет назад
With it breaking at the knot, it's likely not the tailpiece... and you wouldn't be the first to have trouble with them breaking right on the knot. I don't know what other knots you could try, but there might be one in a sailor's or boy scout's book that would be gentler on it. Good luck!

Hi Hunter, I was thinking of buying the Aquila nylgut strings (just the white ones) and I was wondering if the 5th string is full length or not? I'm looking for a set that has a full length fifth string so... :)

Boy, I'm not sure now. I've got a feeling it is, but couldn't say for sure. I bet a dealer would be able to tell you though. Good luck!

How is the tension? I tried the original nylgut and found the amount of give affected my playing. I went with La Bella and like them, but if these have less give, I might give them a try.

Havent gotten into the nylgut thing yet but I saw the video and read your review on the BHO...seems like the set to have if I ever decide to use nylon strings.

ok yeah, I just put these Aquilla red's on my test banjo, tuned it up to open G, and they sound like a trombone and shake uncontrollably. I think I need to go up an entire octave, I have em on open G alright, but I need to up to the next G I think. XD
