I too, start Christmas shopping early. I have a box in a spare room and when I find something for someone I put it in the box. When the Christmas season arrives I look in the box to start wrapping and am surprise by many purchases and am very please I started early. ❤ Thanks again
💫~Beautiful, beautiful book! ♡Love Susanna Salk! ~And Mary, your jazz selections would sell any book! ~Such a peaceful break in my day ... just add a Hazelnut coffee. ❤
"Let's go shopping" lol - funny - I would be in heaven in the chair section of the antique shop! - I agree - I love sidechairs - great book review - thanks as usual 👍
Mary, I also love your videos and so look forward to seeing them and the joy they bring me. Thank you for the shopping trip. I think you made wonderful choices. 💕💕💕
I completely understand. Since these are reviews, my intention is to give the viewer a sample of the book. Before I began this channel I contacted a publishing (Copyright/Trademark) attorney and she gave me lots of advice- the first being: "there can be a fine line between a review and a copyright infringement". I try to respect that advice.
So that’s what Susanna has been up to. I love her Quintessance series. I really enjoyed the trip antiquing. I’ve been wanting to go but it’s just too busy on the farm this time of year.
Well, I think whatever you are doing on the farm we all appreciate, and there will be time for antiquing later. My grandparents had a small farm and as a child I often fed chickens, picked blueberries and dug for (red) potatoes. The potatoes were my least favorite. We had dark sandy soil and it was hot and messy!
I look forward to your videos as a treat in my day. I have been to The Ivy Cottage and will go back when next in that area. My adult son was with me on my visit there. He is furnishing his first apartment and found and purchased an old, lovely, mahogany, secretary desk. This was very sweet, because my first piece of adult furniture, at his same age, was a mahogany secretary desk. These desks were both made by The Jasper Cabinet, Co. We thought that it was an incredible synchronicity. He has styled it with a collection of old, sailing ships. Mine, with porcelain flowers and objects. Your selections were lovely. The towel bar is a wonderful find. I look forward to seeing more videos from you. We have had the same rain, btw. Cleaned out a few closets, rehung pictures, rearranged some furniture. Felt like a prisoner, but a productive prisoner! Blessings to you and your family. Also, a Mary.
Great story- thanks for sharing. I look forward to furniture shopping with my son. He's not quite there yet. It sounds like you were very productive during the rain. I get that way also. During bad weather I usually cook in the winter and clean in the summer. Blessings to you and yours also!
Everytime I comment on Quintessence Sue replies at once and sometimes we go back and forth, they are a great team, I have their books. Great video thank you again !
Thank you! I agree, they are a great team. I appreciate the personal tours and candid conversations they have with the home owners/designers. Quintessence is a fun and happy channel…who doesn’t need that!?
Thanks for the tour of the antique store! I thought that you would get the two items that you purchased!!! Send the rain to us. 100miles southwest of Chicago. Farmers are doing the rain dance .! loved the Book by Suzanne ! She is a fav of mine!
Thank you for sharing Susanna Salk’s latest book. She is always a breathe of fresh air on Quintessence, and so knowledgeable! And thanks, too, for taking us along on a “bonus” shopping trip.
OMG! Your posts just get better and better! I was drooling over the book this week. Then, shopping, I was yelling out loud, "you've got to be kidding me!" I'm in Southern California and we have nothing that rivals that consignment shop you took us to. Unreal deals and finds! Such FUN! Thank you for making my day. (I'm originally from the East Coast, btw.)
Thank you! I appreciate your excitement about the shopping trip. I went back yesterday to give those chairs another look. I really don't need them, but if they stay on my mind another day I might have to adopt them. 😜
Midwest always seem to have the lowest prices on everything. Nobody wants these riches anymore. These younger generations want disposable junk. They toss grandmothers things to the side like trash yet what they don’t realize is they are buying trash and trying to live with that. Makes no since.
Great book review! I have enjoyed Susanna Salks' RU-vid interviews of designers at their homes. This is a great book that compiles several designers. I will put it on my wish list. I am currently waiting for the book you reviewed earlier, charm school. The rainy day vintage and antique shopping was fun and you certainly fid well with your 3 purchases! Thank you Mary!
Hi Mary, this was made in Arzberg, Bavaria. I googled the name and found some interesting info under "Schumann porcelain " this manufacturer made many different patterns and can be found in German flea markets. Enjoyed your visit to the antique shop. You got great finds at very reasonable price. Personally I find it difficult to find bargains in Germany . Enjoyed your book's review.
I just got back from Scotland and on my last day I popped into the two charity shops to say goodbye, nice ladies, and I bought a large fine porcelain bowl, quite deep and covered in flowers and insects and butterflies inside and out, couldn't resist! NOT that I needed another salade bowl as some time ago I bought two Portmeirion ones and a lovely Spode Italian one. I paid only a few euros each for the Portmeirion and 2 euros for the Spode! Who doesn't love a bargain, especially a beautiful one !
Susanna is one of the best, I love her and look forward to her tho I’ve been unwell for nearly a yr, I’m better now so I’ll be watching her, love her style, her clothes and her beautiful face!
Lovely book review today, I do remember Susanna Salk from quintessence I did subscribe for quite a while. I really enjoyed your visit to the antique shop and you found some sweet porcelain pieces and was intrigued with the towel holder. Love the magnolia blossoms, I have three little gem magnolias in my garden and also I live in the magnolia state of Mississippi. Have a blessed weekend and I look forward to next week's video.
Thanks for watching. I love Magnolias also. We have 4 full grown in our yard. The leaves fall consistently, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. When I was a child my grandmother told me the blossoms were what heaven smelled like.
Indeed. Enchanting is right. And boy do I miss North Carolina and that rain! We love it here in AZ no question about it, but that drizzle, all the green, buoyant life, again, enchanting. Enjoying the work you do with this very much. Hailing from Boston originally TTT and New England Fine Living are the two favored channels by far. Suzanna is a much esteemed authoress. Cheers and thanks for sharing!
Well that is a very nice thing to read! I'm so glad you enjoy the content I provide. I love all the green lush plants also. How often do you get rain in AZ? Thanks for watching.
@@thetartantopiary not often enough, LOL. Of course, means no grass to cut though we had someone to help with that in Raleigh. Not the case at the farm north of town. When I wasn’t working I was cutting! 30 acres of pasture. Thought the idea of never having to cut grass sounded until I realized he much I miss grass and rain. We’ll undoubtedly migrate back that way one day.
@@thetartantopiary no kidding. We were on Touchstone Forest off Ebenezer Church. Magnificent little corner and boy do I wish we’d kept that place. But, again, who knows what time will bring, right. LOL. Thanks again for your wonderful content and I agree with the comment below. Better and better each time. Really clever idea and nice recommendations.
I just ran across you about a week ago and I've since seen 7-8 of your nice offerings. Always enjoyable. I especially liked your shopping trip today. Thank You.
I would definitely have grabbed that faux bamboo side chair with the bee upholstery for $100. Love the towel bar. Looks like a great book to add to my design collection.
I needed that chair like I need a hole in my head, but I went back to get it along with the 2 skirted chairs. The faux bamboo chair was gone! I pulled down one of the skirted chairs and they were slipper chairs (no arms). They would be perfect for a dressing room or large bedroom. I passed but they are still on my mind.
Hi Nina or is it Mary? I am hearing Nina but commenters say Mary.. Loved the book review and I always watch Susanna's videos too. I will check at our local B&N book store on this one. I love the rain and enjoyed your shopping. That looks like a really nice place to go. I love your section as well and sometimes better. Would love a tour of inside your home. As always, thank you! 💕
Mary thanks for another great video. I’m gonna go to barnes and nobles for this book. I like to support the brick and mortar stores too! Susanna’s style is happy and collected over time. I loved the shopping trip. The bee chair was calling my name even though I don’t need it! Lol🤣 So many beautiful things.
Thank you. I appreciate that you support actual book stores. I would be lost without being able to go into a shop and thumb through a book. Have a great weekend.
Hello Mary, I loved the book review! I think you did pretty darn good on your recent shopping trip! Love your Grandmother's interpretation of a rainy-day ......or was that yours? (LOL) Have a wonderful week and I will see you in the next one....hugs! ;)
Yes, you got me on that one. It was my interpretation. My grandmother was very frugal, but seemed to always have everything she wanted. She rarely denied my requests when she took me shopping, but always took the opportunity to explain the value of a dollar. Hugs back!
Thank you Mary, I can be having a mediocre day ( my way of not saying a bad day) but when I see you have posted another video it brightens up my day completely and can’t wait to set aside the time to sit and enjoy your latest book find and “general musings” I have donated many books to our Little Free Library in town just so I can make room for the beautiful books you share. “ save your pennies for a rainy day” touched my heart and made me think of my grandmother too. What great things you found. That was really fun Thank you. I loved the serving dish from Czechoslovakia . I have a weakness for pretty dishes. I found that if I really find a pretty one or two I buy them and for a birthday or special occasion for family and friends I bake something and present it wrapped in cellophane with a simple ribbon as a gift.Cookies, muffins etc. I’ve purchased petite fours from our bakery and used those as well if I don’t have time to bake. A pretty cake stand is great also presented with a cake of course!
I hope you are feeling better. Mediocre is no fun, I have been there many days. Thank you for the great idea of presenting a gift from your kitchen in these beautiful serving dishes. I am definitely going to do this. I may go back and see if the Czechoslovakian dish is still there. It was only $12. Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope your weekend gets better. 💐
Mary, The Farm house that I have lived in for the past 25 years has a built in hutch that needs to be re-invented. My thought are to remove the four glass upper doors and turn it into a book shelf and add different pieces of my collections for added interested. The shelfs are also glass as well it is lighted. What are you thoughts on my new idea?
I love that. Be careful with the glass shelves. Their tolerance for weight is usually much less than wood. Also, if you used a striking wallpaper (Schumacher, William Morris or a personal favorite) to cover the back of the hutch- that would be eye catching. Even a paint color that mixes well with the rest of the room would be a nice background for books or other curiosities. If the wood used for the hutch is burl or other exceptional wood; leave it as is. This sounds like a nice project!
Thank you for sharing about this new book; I’m excited to see it. Would you share the names of these shops? I see SO many wonderful gifts for others. Thanks for your consideration, Julie 🌷 PS We do need the rain SE of Chicago.
@@thetartantopiary The back of the hutch is covered with mirrored glass with gold swirls on it , not my taste and never has been. I Love the idea of using wall paper on the mirrored glass. I have rolls of white wall paper that I think I'll use for this project. The paper is textured and made to be painted over so if the white doesn't work for me I can always dry brush it to give it more interest.
Hi Miss Mary! Wow, you are really cranking out excellent reviews as usual - thank you for the extras this week! I always enjoy each video and enjoy learning from you. You are very inspirational and project so much great enthusiasm - thanks for the shopping tour today as well, that was fun! Happy weekend and waiting for the next one........
@thetartantopiary I lived in Wilmington for ten years, mostly in Pine Valley. After my divorce I went to Wake Co. I cried a solid two weeks because I could no longer smell the ocean. I have dined at Endochine, love it. You are a great journalist and decorator but most of all you understand home in your heart. Your videos speak to what makes a house a home.
I love your reviews and picked up several of the books. I'm getting lost a bit .... please share where you keep yours, how you remember ideas you like in each to try without getting overwhelmed. Thank you
“Save your pennies for a rainy day” let’s go shopping! I loved shopping with you at the consignment store. I also enjoyed Susanna Salks’ RU-vid channel as well as her latest book. Great book review! I love love love the Victorian Brass Towel Rack, kudos to you. Mary thanks for another great video.
Mary I just love your videos. I grab a cup of coffee and my cat and I watch together. I learn so much. Is the name of the consignment shop The Ivy Cottage as mentioned below? What town is that in? I would love to shop there sometime. I could not believe the inventory they had. Your magnolias are beautiful.
Ok, I love Susanna Salk and I have several of her books (and this one is now on my list) but I have to say I really enjoyed the shopping trip!! I love your style and taste! Great choices. I love that you also gave information about the creators. As a side, I had a question. What is the blue paint you used on your porch ceiling? Do you remember the color name? I chose SW "Atmospheric" for my last house, which was very nice but a bit too pale. I haven't yet decided for my current house. Thank you for another very pleasant video!!
It is a Benjamin Moore paint and I can't remember the name of the color, but I will get back to you on that. Thanks for watching and I always appreciate your comments!
Great question! It depends on who you ask, but it is generally agreed upon by professional appraisers, art dealers, and antique specialists that antiques are by definition “any object that is at least one hundred years old”, and the term vintage refers to “any object that is older than 20 years old and less than 75-100 years old”.
Must say I really have no time for Ms Salk. Whenever she does a house review for RU-vid etc she is ludicrously effusive. If everything is ‘fabulous’ how can you tell if someknow actually knows what they are talking input. She reviewed a house once which was lovely but had very intrusive road noise. I unfortunately mentioned this in a comment and she wasn’t happy. Clearly the deal was that only positive, lovely, comments were welcome. The truth wasn’t welcome however. I expected no different TBH I do love this Chanel however. It’s very elegantly put together.
