Fantastic blow up of my Who. terrific statement at the end about the lyrics and today's times. Townshend had a way of writing socially meaningful songs, without being political and shilling for one side of the other, through his music, and from his stage. by the way, I love the other Lifehouse songs, Pure and Easy is a good one from Odds and Sodds, So many good tunes.

Who's Next was my first self-bought album. Won't get fooled again has always been my favorite rock song ever since. And years later it was great to play and sing that song live with a band! Robert thanks for keeping this song alive! 👍🎸

I know it can feel that way, Michael. There is a boatload of mediocrity these days and that’s often when gets pushed into the mainstream. But there is still lots of good stuff being created and produced. We just don’t have centralized listening (like AOR radio) anymore, so it’s hard for the great stuff to find a mass audience.

No doubt, Steve. I started watching the 8-part documentary 1971 on Apple TV+ last night. It’s all about the reciprocal impact of culture on music and vice versa. Not surprisingly, this song showed up!

This is the song that I connected with on a very deep level in 2016 when I was trying to understand the results of our presidential election. After almost 8 years of struggling with this political mess, I realize the best thing to do is pick up my guitar and play.

I love that, Brad. The results of 2016 threw many people for a loop. I responded by writing new lyrics for Jim Croce’s Working at the Car Wash Blues, calling it a Dosage of the Daily News: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UvI616dgUmE.htmlsi=KAqhASx3xJAH6VBA

I always thought John added so much to the Who. They were so different. Take for instance My Wife, Whiskey Man or The Quiet Man. And his horn parts added another dimension to their sound.

Robert...you hit it out of the park again! Thanx for this blow-up of the WHO! BTW, you noted that the WHO were known to perform loudly. You probably know that Pete Townshend suffered for many years from tinnitus, which still may be bothering him. However (!), he was once on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson," and Johnny asked him about this. Pete shocked Johnny and the world when he said that tinnitus hasn't been a problem for him anymore even since he went to a homeopathic physician! When I saw this show live, I literally fell off the couch. Mind you, I had heard this "rumor," and was so pleased to learn that it was not a rumor. I have since heard that Pete has been bothered by tinnitus since then, possibly in part because Pete's homeopath passed away. Roger Daltrey also had a magnificent experience with homeopathic medicine! He told The Times (of London) that his son was extremely sick when the kid was only one years old. The doctors at the hospital released him and fully expected him to die...but Roger took him to a homeopath who cured him. At the time of the interview in The TImes, Roger's son was a healthy 28-year old chap. Because you, Robert, and your wife, Bara, have a special love for homeopathy, I thought you both would want to know about these stories.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard 3 года назад
Thanks, Dana. I LOVE your homeopathic Who stories. As you well know, given the power of homeopathy, miracles happen every day. Sadly, I’ve seen many a relapse occur when homeopathic treatment gets interrupted. (My own mother was such a case.) Man, I’d love to see that Carson/Townshend interview. I’d have fallen off my chair, too!

Pete Townshend: One of my favorite (if not my absolute favorite) rock guitarists (can't completely forget about Lindsey). The Moon: Best Drummer EVER (cuz his playing is PURE energy and emotion). JE: Who can play bass like that?....very few. Daltrey: just try singing most Who songs, you'll see. The Who: THE BEST pure rock 'n' roll band EVER! Townshend plays guitar very rhythmically. He has an urgency and an insistence to his playing...almost an anger. He is the biggest influence on me, as a rhythm guitar player, of all guitar players. There's a story I read once (before RU-vid...I think it was a RS article) that recounted the Who's Next sessions at Mick's house. Daltrey was working on that final section (meet the new boss) and he had chosen to have his mic set up in a hallway because he liked the sound in that hallway. The rest of the band were in the kitchen having dinner. They could hear the take as it was being made. When he got to the scream (which he had never before done like he was about to do it) it was so intense that it literally startled the others out of their seats as they were eating. Apart from his rhythm playing, Townshend's riffs are always great and sooo Townshend. The interplay between Pete and The Moon can perhaps only be equalled by the interplay between Bonham and Page. I can't think of a better word than "Acrobatic" to describe John Entwistle's bass playing. Even down to a bit of Pete's riffing that they allowed to bleed through to the main track during the last 5 staccato beats of the song, this song is the masterpiece of a masterful and legendary album. They just don't make 'em like that any more. Thanks for remembering it and doing it great justice!

Great stuff, Steve. I love your opinions, extra details and comment about The Who being the best of pure rock ‘n’ roll. Never really thought about how deep Townshend’s influence runs, but you’re certainly not alone in having him as a primary influence. When you go back to seminal tracks like My Generation, it’s like they were the pioneers of punk, too.
