Join me on an epic gravel cycling adventure through the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland! 🚴‍♂️ Starting from Balmoral Castle car park in Crathie, we head north up the historic old military road, traverse the scenic gravel tracks along the River Gairn, and explore the wild beauty of Loch Builg.
Our journey takes us past a charming turf-roofed hunting lodge, up the shoulder of the stunning yet not-quite-Munro Culardoch, and down through the ancient Scots Pine forests to Invercauld House. Experience the serene Ballochbuie Forest, the majestic presence of Lochnagar, and the tranquil shores of Loch Muick.
From the Spittal of Glenmuick, we cycle across the moorlands, completing our loop back to Balmoral. Discover hidden gems, historical landmarks, and the natural splendour of the Cairngorms National Park. This route is a must for any gravel cycling enthusiast!

Great video and edit. The ride looks like one I'm going to have to do.

Just found your channel and subscribed. Fantastic quality and a great day out. Brought back memories of my early forays into mtb rides around Loch Muick coming from the Glen Doll side. 1988 on my first ever mtb, a specialised hard rock which was basically a chunky bike, no suspension, fat tyres and a wider group set. Loved that bike.

Thank you for subscribing! I appreciate the support. I actually plan to ride around there from Glen Doll too, bit not on such a vintage bike I think 😀

Great video as usual! Some of that rubble definitely is MTB territory! That's the thing about the wilderness, beautiful sublime gravel but only connected by a barsteward of a 2 mile rubble track or HAB!

Great video. The difference in your moving time and actual time just shows how much time it takes to position the camera for bike pasts and getting the drone up.

Yes it does tend to eat in to the time a bit!

That first track is definitely rideable and means less time/distance on the road.

I am often pretty exhausted at the end so the review sometimes feels a bit flat. I need to find a way to get the intro energy into the end of the video!

Great video that brings back some great memories. I've ridden a MTB around Loch Muick and always wanted to go up and over to Balmoral but never quite did it before we left Aberdeen for Ayrshire. But I've walked extensively in that area and know all the mountains well. I think I've climbed Lochnagar more than any other mountain. That track down to Loch Muick from Lochnagar is bad enough to walk down! Definitely one for an MTB. Personally, every time I look at one of your videos or one like it I think, 'hardtail required!'. Did you try a dram at Royal Lochnagar? It is the only distillery I have been to where I didn't buy a bottle after having a taste!

As I am getting on a bit now with this gravel riding lark, I am more often than not thinking a hardtail us the bike of choice more often than not!

@@RustyRidesGravel That said, I bought a new HT for Christmas and promptly thought, 'I need a proper gravel bike!' as it is a bit slow in places. Then of course I need a full-sus e-Bike for the properly gnarly stuff... One can never have too many bikes!

Another great video - I've walked parts of that route when doing the corbetts but now starting to wonder if I should have just invested in a new MTB instead of the gravel bike, going by your recent routes 😀 Hoping 45mm knobbly tubeless tyres at a lower pressure, and a suspension stem will make such routes a bit more gravel bike friendly.

I sometimes wonder if the "challenge" of taking the gravel bike is worth it and I should just accept that a hardtail is really what I need...

Looked a great ride, thanks for sharing. Oh and the track on the north side of Lock Muick is fine for most bikes but the trail on the south side is a pig even on a mtb. Single track that has lots of rocks so I had to push a lot of it a couple of years back. Defo not worth it.

Having watched you slog your way up that hill at Lochnagar, have you ever considered an e-bike to make the ride more enjoyable? There's the extra weight to carry around when you're not using the motor I suppose, and you're still young and fit enough to not need it, but just a thought. Excellent video as always and looks like a route I'd certainly consider doing myself. Living on the coast of the North East of Scotland I'd consider this one "local" as well 🙂

Actually I had to cut about a 6 minute rant I had after a guy on an ebike overtook me with no effort at all on that climb! Didn't even say hi! I decided it was the lack of sugar talking so didn't keep it in. I have often thought about getting one, but at them moment it's not an option.
