Yup transitioning from street to the mighty DR. I used to get a bit anxious in the glacier till here in Ontario, till I bought myself some great tires...and practice. Im 64 and cant afford to fall down much anymore lol I do envy guys on Beta's' that regularly speed by.

Just like when people think they want a true race car for the street, and what they really would want is a sport-tourer: in the motorcycle world, people think they want an "adventure bike" but what they'd really have more fun with is a dirt bike. Street bike riders don't understand how little traction you have off-road, even with a fat, knobby, barely-DOT-legal set of tires. You have like 1/10th the traction in most situations, in addition to all the uneven surfaces and deep sand and deep mud, etc, and what you really need is a dirt bike. My cut-off for ADV/enduro fun, is the bike needs to be dirt-bikey enough for the front fender and gauge cluster and fairing to turn with the front wheel. If the whole front of the bike just stays frozen in place no matter what you're doing with the handlebars, it doesn't belong in the dirt. Also an enduro needs to be no heavier than 350 pounds. 275 is even better.

I think once you've tried a small nimble dirt bike, you'll end up saying, screw the big bike, these small bikes are so much more fun. Let the big bikes stay on the street. That's what happened to me. I bought a KTM 300 XCW and now I barely ride my R1200GSA.

Having made big strides in the past few years on a dirtbike, it was crazy to hop back on my big 500lb adv bike and discover how many things that didnt used to seem possible a few years ago become just another ride when i take the long way home. Gaining some abilities and confidence will do way more for you than any physical improvement you make to a bike (short of tossing the 95% street tire in favor of a 95% dirt)

Or get a 25KG lighter true adv bike... anything north of 180kg is nuts when there is an actual 145kg alternative (kove 450 rally)

@ktkace I have thought about that, the old Gs is very much a choice of passion more than rational reason. It's not the right tool for the job, but I like it, and more often than not, it's nothing about the bike that's holding me back, it's typically been confidence. That said, I'm typically a lot more keen to try something technical on my wr250, right tool for the job after all.

Is there a calendar for this event? I'd like to see if I can make time for it before I apply.

Any plan on an intermediate adv clinic? The multi day stuff is hard for me but I’d be stoked to bring the T7 back up to carry on where we left off last year.
