Man it's good to listen to experienced players with years of knowledge. You hear it in their voice just as well as you do in their playing. It's the little things that go unnoticed that take their notes to the next level. I sometimes listen to recordings of Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt and you can actually hear them take a breathe or hear a key being pressed. I may never reach their level of playing ability but for me it's so enjoyable just trying. Being able to play your instrument the way you want is magical and enables you to leave your listeners spellbound. We're still under the spell of the likes of Coltrane, Miles, Dizzy, Monk, etc. Thanks Jay for another excellent video.

The eBay Meyer is the best of the three. I think that it is just the right amount of dark.
@disgruntled_llama
@disgruntled_llama 4 года назад
I thought exactly the same thing. His personal one is plenty dark for my taste (almost a classical sound) where the eBay purchase had a little more sting to the sound when he pushed it. But ya gotta play what you hear in your head, not what other people like!

Absolutely LOVE these saxophonist interviews. I learn so much from them everytime. You are a fantastic interviewer because you are a great listener, you are a passionate fan like the rest of us and you know when to get out of the way and let the interviewee talk, share and express themselves. Awesome job Jay! Thanks for all your other great videos too.

Great interview! He plays beautifully. I had no idea a mouthpiece could change the sound so much. I am a new beginner alto sax player, had to learn to read music as well as learning the sax. And I am "72" yrs young! Jay you are great! Thank you!
@Osnosis
@Osnosis 3 года назад
A mpc doesn’t really change your sound; it facilitates your sound. So much of our sound is ‘built in’ to our body, and, while there are minor differences at the beginning, ultimately the mouthpiece conforms to your sound.

Wonderful interview with a wonderful musician. Thank you so much. I am in agreement about the mouthpiece being so important ... it's the sound generator ... the source! On alto I play on a modern Meyer that was refaced by Phil-Tone. Best alto piece I ever had and affordable. I bought it used from PM Woodwinds. Thanks again for the interview and the words of wisdom.

Great advice from a real pro. BTW, your pentatonic pattern course is great. Purchased it 2 years ago but had other material to master. Have used yours and also other's backing tracks in various keys. Also making some via Band in a Box. Learning to improv in the blues, I limited myself to start with several notes and moved up. Learned also from 2-5-1 standards that you can play the whole tune playing the pentatonic scale derived from the 5th note of the maj7 chord. Played over "Misty" with gm7/c7/fmaj7 on alto with derivations of C penta. Sounded great! Thanks!

My Mark 6 tenor I found on the other side of the state of Idaho where my dad had grown up. I managed to get my dad to go into the music store and discovered that the owner was my Dad's music teacher from when he was in High School. After the visi I was a happy camper jeading home with a Mark 6 Tenore for a graduation present. Still playing on that beautiful horn and it is one of those Mark 6s that have been lovingly maintained and great repairmen have taken the time to do a great job. Enjoyed hearing this interviea. Danggg.. I had a similar experience. One time, I had just finished performing, I put my tenor inside the case, closed it and someone came up to talk to me. Once, they left I picked up my sax case to put it on my back (it has straps like a backpack) and heard something slammed the floor-that was my sax..........it had fallen out because I forgot to zipped up my case! My sax got messed up my, I had to fix it but it did give me a story to tell(: lol
